  1. Well, that operates on the assumption that all inexperienced people are the same. I have no experience as a bus driver. My dog has no experience as a bus driver. Whose bus are you getting on? (The pigeon is not an option.)
  2. Moon, add that meteorite thingy to the list. Can we place requests for that someone?
  3. 1. I’d be annoyed that we signed the up-and-down Snell for SEVEN YEARS. 2. I’d be happy with the improved SP. 3. I’d be shocked and elated that the Sox were spending again. 4. I’d be in disbelief that the Sox outbid the Mets. So … mixed emotions?
  4. Another fact, only the Dodgers and Astros have longer postseason streaks. And the spend-happy Dodgers have only one WS title in their 11 year postseason run…
  5. Ok so how is the brand different from the pre-Henry century?
  6. Not sure where you live, but that goes back to MLB not marketing their stars, which is some sort of weird and stupid tradition in this sport. How come almost no MLB stars do national commercials? Or make appearances on TV shows? I can easily name a dozen football players and basketball players who have hosted Saturday Night Live, but not a single baseball player. I can name as many football and basketball players who went on to become successful actors. Again, not a single MLB player. Why, if this sport is as popular as it is, does it work so hard to keep itself out of mainstream? Even their pathetic broadcasting packages and archaic blackout rules tell us how badly MLB wants to keep its product and stars as some sort of National Secret…
  7. Disagree. I’m not going to soak for the 1919-1960 brand, for obvious reasons. But do you really think it’s changed all that much over the past 30 years? Or 40 years? Or are you solely focusing on the last 20 years and crediting Henry with destroying a brand without any credit for embellishing it?
  8. I never advised him to be one. At this point, I’m just hoping his Moneyball tactics pan out. The downside is never having big star talent. But the bright side is there are lots of exploitable strategies in baseball. The Sox might be willing to spend more if MLB marketed its stars more heavily, like other sports have always done. Then players like Betts become an asset (financially, he’s already a baseball asset) and not a great expenditure. There would be greater incentive to keep those players around…
  9. I have my doubts it goes that far. This brand has an 86 year title drought with being destroyed…
  10. Seriously? Why do I need to? Henry isn’t running those teams (despite the wishes of many). I mean, I basically said “businesses cut costs” and your reply was “but what about businesses that don’t?” Hey, maybe they make less money. Maybe they aren’t trying to maximize profits. Maybe those teams are not prioritizing budget over winning…
  11. Then why are people asking me about it? And why other trans are spending? It’s like they think I’m actually involved in these decisions…
  12. I think his goal is clearly financial. Winning is secondary. On the bright side, I don’t think it is completely off his SMART goals list…
  13. Then don’t buy tickets and cancel NESN. I’m just telling you what a Henry is clearly doing…
  14. And while we as fans do not like this, is it or is it not a sound and time-honored business practice?
  15. Every business in the world tries to be more successful for less money. Not sure why this notion is so foreign to some folks…
  16. Safer. I think 2019 - when the Sox had one of the highest payrolls in the game and missed the postseason entirely and by a lot - made him re-evaluate spending. As I said before, Henry tried to hire Beane. He did hire Bill James. There has always been a fascination with winning without spending…
  17. Is he making money or not?
  18. Is there any indication Henry plans on selling? The way this team appears headed now, even a bad season didn’t lose as much money…
  19. No, Boston did it the easy way - spend, spend, spend. Henry doesn’t want to go that way any more. This is not rocket science…
  20. The Sox have been in the same league all those years. Don’t cheapen what Tampa did by saying they had a better chance than Boston. That’s blatantly misleading. When Henry bought this team, do you remember his first attempt at a big move? Hint: he tried to hire then-Oakland GM Billy Beane, a man whose fame came from putting together winning teams on a crazy small budget. Beane got so famous for this, he was played by Brad Pitt in a major motion picture. Please name one other MLB GM who was portrayed by an A-List actor. Why are we pretending this is new?
  21. Is this a serious criticism?
  22. I absolutely agree with that. And I don’t think it’s impossible. I do think it’s extremely difficult despite how easy Tampa makes it look…
  23. There is no “waiting until the team is worth investing in.” That’s not what’s going on. It’s become very obvious Henry wants to run this team like Tampa is run. No one ever looks at Tampa’s rotation and thinks “that looks unbeatable.” Lately it’s been McLanahan and/or Glashow. Rarely both. And rarely anyone else. Unless you were high on Zack Eflin and his 99 ERA+ over 7 years in Philly. (If so, maybe you can get equally excited if the Sox sign Eric Lauer.). Tampa also doesn’t churn out star pitcher after star pitcher from their farm; they live off scrap heaps. Guys like Jeffrey Springs, Jason Adam, and Andrew Kittredge that they poach from other teams… It’s obvious the Sox really do want to be Tampa North. If it works, that’s a good thing. Tampa has made the postseason 5 straight years, something Boston has never done in team history…
  24. In Kluber’s two previous seasons, he posted a 4.17 ERA/3.66 FIP with a 4.1:1 K:BB over 244 IP. There isn’t much there that didn’t say he deserved to be paid as much as Kyle Gibson or Matthew Boyd…
  25. It’s almost as of there was some franchise-altering move around that time…
