Two obvious. Maybe three, depending on whether or not you think Yordan Alvarez is a Hall of Famer. (He has a legit shot.) One of them won a World Series this past year. Possible four if you count Zack Greinke. They also once non-tendered a 26yo former ROY and MVP. Non-tendered!! Granted, that got isn’t going to the Hall of Fame. But MVP at 23 and non-tendered at 26! There was a time when that was reality. Nowadays, we seem to be middle of the pack and dropping. The urgency on this forum to spend didn’t start this off-season. It started in the 2019/2020 timeframe, when the Sox were still among the highest payrolls in the league…

I like him more than Soler, at least as an OF. Soler is a pretty dangerous hitter. But I would just assume pass on Soler and maybe spend on a pitcher, even if his name is Clevinger…

In case you are no longer aware, the Red Sox no longer want to have the highest payroll in the league. It worked from a baseball standpoint, but something about it from a business standpoint clearly has not been sitting well with Henry. That he gave us a few years of top tier payroll is nice and we all enjoyed it, but he clearly has always been about running a more efficient team that costs less. As Dombrowski prefers to operate in the upper stratosphere of payrolls, his MO doesn’t fit well with what the Sox want to do. It’s not about liking it. It’s just reality…

Similar to Soler, at least offensively. Basically a RHH corner OF/DH bat that they seem to have placed on the radar. I’m not confident on Cabrera as much as I see this team only affording reclamation projects, too prospects, or backend starters. Since top pitching prospects are next to impossible to acquire, that leaves reclaimation projects as best case scenario…

There’s things too like about Duran and things to question. 1. Like his ability to pressure defenses, especially outfield defenses 2. Don’t like his defense anywhere but LF (although he did markedly improve in CF last year). 3. Don’t like his .381 BABIP. So not sustainable…

Understandable. I like his offensive potential. Especially that all he needs to do is make an outfielder take 3 steps to either side - and it’s a double. But he just didn’t have a position, assuming the Sox ever get a RHH bat that was so high on the radar all those months ago.

Duran for Cabrera might be a slight overpay. But it would probably be worth it to Boston if they plan on signing Soler or someone similar…

If you truly believe in the importance of starting pitching, why would a Major League franchise deal one of its top two starting pitchers while trying to compete, which they are clearly doing if they acquire Kim? If you were GM, would you trade either of those pitchers and NOT get back one of Anthony, Mayer or Teel? So why do you think Miami would? Cabrera, with a much lesser track record, is clearly more available than the other two. And for good reason…

I’m kind of hoping the Sox deal Duran for a SP. I’d move Duran (and his .381 BABIP) for Edward Cabrera, but Miami’s too need is a shortstop. While it didn’t work out of BTV, a deal where: Miami gets Ha-Seong Kim to fill their void at SS San Diego gets Jarren Duran, who gives them a much-needed left-handed outfield bat that fits the cost—cutting budget Boston gets Edward Cabrera to fill a big void in their rotation…

Dombrowski’s parting gifts weren’t much better. $145mill for Sale?h Another way to look at it is, while increasing spending, Dombrowski’s Phillies went 259-227 over the last 3 seasons. While maintaining payroll, Bloom’s Red Sox went 248-238 over the last 3 seasons. In completely different situations, only 11 more wins over 3 years. That’s not a lot. In fact, after two years, Bloom’s team actually had a better record. Maybe if Bloom figured out what to do at a trade deadline, things would have been all but equal…

If DD was here instead of Breslow, we’d probably still have Sale. If Sale is healthy, the Sox are better. But if not, the Sox are most likely worse off than they are today. Would we have Giolito? I could see DD making that move. But if he didn’t, what would he have gotten that was better for the same money?
