  1. Because Giolito was the more obvious injury risk?
  2. The Umpire Union does not allow this. MLB does use their evaluations to determine the best umpires for the postseason, but even this has lead to a lawsuit and allegations of discrimination from Angel Hernandez, despite his lengthy track record of being a complete and well-known bonehead...
  3. Since 2017, only Story (2.9 fWAR) and Brock Holt (2.2 fWAR) have given the Sox more than 1 win above replacement at 2B. Only Arroyo, Iglesias, Kinsler, Urias and Taylor Motter have positive fWAR. Fangraphs does list 35 players at the position, but that include 6 innings from Betts, 3 innings from Devers and 2 innings from Swihart...
  4. Or when Whitlock and Pivetta come back. Whichever comes first...
  5. How many players do you think are still with the same organization since 2015? I’m sure there’s a few but I bet not that many…
  6. I think he should be governor of Massachusetts. I might not give as much credit to Bailey as many others, simply because I spent all off-season thinking this staff was better than most people thought. Granted, Giolito fit into that, and I’ve never been keen on Whitlock or Houck starting. But I liked Crawford and Pivetta more than most. So I think I give more credit to the pitchers, despite believing Bailey has certainly been helpful…
  7. Would have been 31 out of 32 if McGuire had just been able to squeeze that foul tip off the bat of Jose Ramirez…
  8. Well he didn't do any damage. It's been one game so far...
  9. A little. But I think I was justified since he has given me a few reasons to worry over the past few seasons.
  10. Part of Boras' mastery is using the press. Quite often having them relay an offer from a "mystery team." Does anyone really think some team said "here's an offer, but keep our name out of it. We don't want our fans to know we are willing to spend money to improve the team."
  11. I'm sure if Boston had a competitive (Re: excessive) offer, Montgomery would have had more interest. Interest is often tied to financial commitment. Certainly players want to win, but I can't tell you how many teams have signed with some sub-.500 team for a boatload of cash and then in the press conference talked about how they went to that team to win. When asked about why he signed somewhere, it's really rare to hear a player say "they paid me the most money. Duh!"
  12. Nice to know your share the same sense of fashion as my teenage daughter...
  13. OK, but that means acknowledging they are a lesser degree of wrong on occasion...
  14. Hoping the new names on the right side can at least bring some average D to the infield...
  15. No, but that might be what Bloom was doing...
  16. But bottom line - they make plenty of mistakes and miss lots of stories. And some of them have clear angles. And let's face it, many of them prefer to be negative because nothing keeps you reading them more than bad news. Nothing in any aspect of journalism (including sports) attracts more readers and viewers than bad news. Mazz, in particular, always reminds me of the Peter Jacobson character from 61*, first man to find/create negativity and controversy to pass it on and keep people tuned in...
  17. Off topic, but I always wondered if people outside of New England and Michigan even understood that episode. It was so regional...
  18. Admit it. You had your hand in Chavis for Davis...
  19. I think he might have had interest if Boston was willing to pay him as much or more than the Dodgers offered.
  20. We like to live in a world where the media has 100% access to everything, but the reality is they simply don't and never will. Plenty of these players sign deals with no previous story that the team and player were even talking...
  21. I thought from Day One of the off-season that Montgomery was the better option than the mercurial Blake Snell. Montgomery was unspectacular, but was at least consistently good. Whereas Snell was either elite or average and never in between, and this was due to his frequent injuries...
  22. Well, if you’re on the front lines, you need to be comfortable…
  23. Dumpster diving? We got a first baseman who was an All Star less than 2 years ago. If people consider that dumpster diving, then they’re just inconsolable. Those are the people looking at the Sox 18-13 record solely focused on that 13. Now Breslow at least did the smart thing with scooper and made a trade rather than hoping his waiver claim went through. (No way it would have.)
  24. Unless you like Lester/Buchholz/Masterson
  25. He gave up on the wrong ones. Payamps? Good bye Littell? Seen enough Jacques? Gotta keeper! Ort?
