  1. Cora won’t hesitate to put Duran in CF…
  2. Small sample. If he goes 3 for 3 with 3 singles it jumps to .752. His biggest issue is Hamilton and likely call up Romy Gonzalez are already on the 40 man. If they call up Romy Gonzalez, he isn’t exactly loaded with out field experience. 712 minor league innings, mostly in LF. That’s roughly half of a season. It’s probably enough for his inevitable bench role, however. And he’s the closest thing to a minor league outfielder on the 40 man…
  3. Schaneul is 10 months older. Wyatt Langford is a 13 months older. Certainly not huge differences, but both are playing in their age 22 season while Mayer is in his age 21 season. And Schanuel is certainly displaying his legendary plate discipline, but not much else. The biggest reason NOT to promote Mayer is - when did he last play? Portland’s season was supposed to start last night. Did it? And did Mayer play? If not, he hasn’t played in a real game at any level in quite some time. Even if he did, he’s only played one game since last year’s injury-shortened campaign…
  4. I doubt the Sox start his service time clock and set him up for free agency at age 28 just so he can field a few grounders while Story heals. Rafaela is already in Boston. Hamilton has played in Boston. Pablo Reyes has proven to be an acceptable short term solution once already. Sogard dazzled in ST. Grissom comes back next week and has MLB SS experience. His defensive shortcomings Atlanta disapproved of might not bother Cora so much and might not be overly exposed if it’s only for two weeks. (More likely he takes over 2b and pushes weak side 2b platoon player Reyes into full time SS.) I think they have other options. I think Rafaela for the next week or so, and then Grissom takes over 2b and pushes Reyes into SS. Not sure who they recall to replace Story if/when he hits the IL…
  5. Hamilton can fill a need in Worcester. It’s just that if he is not needed when the only starter above him on the org depth chart gets hurt, he really had no place on the 40 man roster. If they do call him up, even just to fill a bench role, obviously that’s different. But if not, DFA him, and then you can re-sign him to Worcester if he clears waivers (and accepts assignment)…
  6. Grumpy old men don’t complain about golf. They complain about other sports while playing golf…
  7. You do make a solid argument. Still, I’m not convinced. It’s the “Cora good” side that has me waffling…
  8. Henry Davis is 3 years older than Marcelo Mayer and has a .479 OPS. He might not be the best argument to support rushing prospects. If the Sox don’t recall David Hamilton, might as well DFA him. If your AAA shortstop is already on the 40 man and isn’t even the backup solution when your starting shortstop goes down, why keep him? DFA him, select and recall ST superhero (and nephew of Steve Blass Disease poster-boy Steve Sax) Nick Sogard…
  9. I agree on Rafaela making a short stop at shortstop. I suspect O’Neill-Duran-Abreu in the OF. Next week Vaughn Grissom might return. Does Cora think he’s the best option as a stopgap shortstop?
  10. More likely Duran to CF. Cora has never really shied away from that…
  11. I would have accepted an overly broad answer. Pretty much anything more specific than “managed better”…
  12. We need the hit starts of O’Neill and Duran to cover for the cold starts by Devers and Casas…
  13. If the Astros weren’t cheating that may also be true. Any specifics on how Farrell mismanaged that series or what Cora does differently?
  14. If Cora was on the Sox in 2017, the Astros might not have been cheating...
  15. And I still have my vinyl copy of Ziggy Stardust. I don't have a record player, but I still have the album...
  16. But there is a big difference between "best defensive centerfielder I've ever seen" and "best defensive centerfielder ever". One of them is completely uncontestable; the other is subject for debate...
  17. The ballpark is irrelevant, by the way. Not Tauchman's nor Alec Burleson's (the hitter) fault they put the wall where they put the wall. Also, Tauchman's catch, while less spectacular than many, at least falls into the "Back Yard Scenario" that we all dreamed up as kids. "OK, facing your arch-rival with 2 outs, bottom of the ninth, tying run on base...." To quote Humphrey Bogart - "that's the stuff dreams are made of..."
  18. Maximum points awarded not only for the David Bowie reference, but also for using the clear best Bowie album to make that reference....
  19. 2013 could not have turned out better. And in 2017, Farrell was taken out of the post-season by the Cheatin' Astros. Not fair to hold that against him. That only leaves 2016 as a cahnce for improvement. Farrell did have a huge advantage that the 2016 and 2017 teams won the AL East with only 93 wins, and the division almost never goes to a team with that low of a win total. (I believe the 2015 Blue Jays were the only other team to take the East with so few wins since the league split into 3 divisions, suggesting Farrell might have been managing the Sox at the weakest point in division history.)
  20. Farrell might be a bit underappreciated. He lead the Sox to more AL East titles than any other manager in team history, including Francona (who, IMO, is the clear best given he actually lead the Sox during some serious prime powerhouse Yankee seasons). But if Dombrowski gets praised or winning 3 AL East titles, Farrell should be as well...
  21. I can go with best Sox CF I've ever seen. Unless someone is more aware of whom I have seen as a CF, it is hard to say that makes him overrated. Granted, my recollections of Lynn are from before I knew or cared about defense. So who are my other candidates? Armas? Damon? Burks? Crisp? Ellsbury? Steve "Psycho" Lyons? Darren Lewis came here with a rep as an outstanding defender, and even had some hardware, but I just don't recall anything special about him (which means nothing). Ditto Damon Buford...
  22. If anyone was going to get more E’s in that outfield, it was Ricee…
  23. Again. One run igame. In St Louis (their rival). Man on base. Two outs. Bottom of ninth. It doesn’t get more clutch…
  24. Even Mike Tauchman can do that. Also, as I was watching the Tauchman catch, bonus points have to be awarded since it happened in the 9th inning with two outs and the tying run on base…
  25. Some of it is due to playing 8 more games, too…
