    Agreed. But the notion that Bloom traded Betts in order to sign Story and Yoshida is an oversimplified rewrite of history with the agenda of disconnecting Dombrowski from Betts’ departure…

    Disagree. And I complained about it loudly the day it was signed. But Offerman had a .364 OBP his first 3 seasons back before any is us cared about OBP. His defense at 2b left a lot to be desired but he was ok at 1b. I’m not going to say it was a good deal, but I don’t think of it as a bad one anymore. My only complaint is Roberto Alomar signed for only slightly more that off-season…

    Story and Yoshida together do still make over $100mill less than Mookie. And that’s not factoring in the luxury tax that they would have incurred by keeping Betts. If the Sox wanted to extend Betts, it should have been done long before Henry decided to go cheap…

    My only concern with Devers is his defense. I don't know how long he has been playing 3b. Professionally he has been playing since 2014 and, with the exception of 6 innings in his career, has never played any other position. I don't know for sure, but I would be very surprised if he never played 3B before joining the Sox organization. Will he improve? Maybe. Will he ever excel? I have my doubts and think he will eventually need to move to 1B and then possibly DH. The notion that he just needs more practice is probably a bit silly, as he is undoubtedly practicing a lot already...

    Devers is also 27 years old. Every 20 game stretch in his career is not going to provide equal WAR value. If Vegas set the over under on his WAR at 0.9, would you bet the under? But more important, again he is 27. He very likely has not had his best seasons yet. I've repeatedly referred to free agency as paying players in their 30s for what they did in their 20s for another team. But that really isn't the case with Devers. He was extended at a young enough age and also with a good enough track record that he is vey, very likely going to come very close, if not flat out exceed what he has done in the past. The Sox do not have a long history with doing this kind of thing with their players and whikle Devers might have been the last choice for some to extend among him, Betts and Bogaerts, I'm glad the FO did it...

    I don’t think the Sox are rushing Hamilton, Reyes and Valdez. They are what they are - players who hold the roles they own due to limited skill sets. They’re all 25 and over and done what they can in AAA. Players like Westbrook and Alvarez might be better at some things, but they’re not going to completely fill any gaps either. Will the Sox claim anyone? No idea. The Angels and Orioles have been playing DFA volleyball with Livan Soto, and the Sox ignored him. The Yankees just DFAd Kevin Smith, and I’d be surprised if Boston claimed him. Neither of these players is a hidden gem, but both at the bare minimum possess a skill the Sox are not getting from their farm system vets - the ability to play SS at least adequately. Maybe now that Refsnyder is up, Boston will commit to Rafaela at SS. But doing so to get Refsnyder into the lineup full time didn’t seem wise to me.

    Multiple injuries? Most teams can survive having a utility infielder in the lineup every now and then. Not many teams go far when they have to use three of them for multiple consecutive days…

    Bring a bad fielder isn’t necessarily a matter of poor understanding of the fundamentals; in many cases, it’s a simple lack of coordination…

    Yoshida's OPS one year ago today was .560. So he is at the very least, doing what he did last year at this time. Last year, starting one year ago today, he posted an OPS of .896 over his next 81 games. We need that Yoshida back...

    Valdez and Pablo are not exactly desirable trade fodder. They're stopgap solutions filling in for injuries. Valdez shelf-life is directly linked to the return of Grissom, who likely plays second base the bulk of the time, but we shall see if he is not given the occasion/frequent outing at SS. Rafaela is the clear best SS on this team, and probably the best one between Boston and Portland. But since Portland is not supplying a solution anytime soon, I could see him taking SS this year. But Cora has overtly stated his future is in CF, so his play at SS is up in the air right now unfortunately. Especially given that Cora has shown he is fine with giving a long leash to weak defensive shortstops. Add to that O'Neill is out right now, leaving the Sox with only 3 outfielders on the roster, assuming they do not put Yoshida out there. So until O'Neill returns, expect Rafaela in CF. This means the Sox infield is left with juggling Reyes, Valdez and Hamilton because right now, they are all healthy...
