  1. What is your source here? Soxprospects.com has Kimbrel down for $13mill in 2017 and B-R has him for $13.5. This is probably why we don't get the sane figures. Inconsistent reporting...
  2. He's still on the 40-man. But as he has options, he's probably far down the depth chart. Guys like Hembree, Abad, Eiias, and Ross who don't have options and are competing for one or two spots in the bullpen re in front of him. I do expect one or two of these guys to be moved. But they might simply be released if no deal can be found, and any deal that is won't be too big of one...
  3. His role is pretty up in the air right now. I like him as a starter more than Pomeranz, but I think Pomeranz was acquired with him being a cheap starter in mind...
  4. Doubtful the Sox bullpen comes in under $20 million. Kimbrel is $13 million by himself and if Buchholz returns to the bullpen he adds another $13.5million. But even without Clay, Ross, Thornburg, Abad, and Kelly are all up for arbitration. Pretty good chance they total up at least close to $7mill. I do disagree Dombrowski is bothered by this and working on the limit. He had options, like non-tendering Abad or Ross and keeping minimum wage Robby Scott, for example. He just didn't do them...
  5. Basically, but more important, because they don't have to. Which is why they won't release Moreland simply to make room for another player...
  6. That's looking at the glass as half full...
  7. Of course Price was once teamed up with two other Cy Young winners in Detroit (Scherzer, Verlander) and it didn't help. Heck it didn't help any of them...
  8. Which would be the stupidest option of all, because he would be paying Moreland $5mill to play for someone else. At that point, why not just keep him and have some actual depth? Do you think keeping Jeff Rutledge on the 25-man instead is that much more important? And before Dombrowski goes releasing Moreland, he should consider that option for Allen Craig, whom he has yet to release. Why is that?
  9. The downgrade from Napoli to anyone might be about equal to the downgrade from Ortiz to Mitch Moreland...
  10. True, but at that point it becomes his decision and not Dombrowski's.. And the longer we go into the off-season, the fewer starting first base options are left for him to approve. ..
  11. In the last CBA, a newly signed free agent couldn't be traded without his approval prior to June 15, regardless of no trade protection. If the Sox do sign a DH, Rutledge will either be returned or a deal for him completed so he can go to Pawtucket. ...
  12. Very true. The bigger question is who fills out the fifth spot. Unlike me, I think Dombrowski and Farrell view Pomeranz as a starter. This leaves one spot for Wright, Buchholz and Rodriguez. Given that he has options and that teams don't necessarily need 5 starters as heavily in April, I do think the unpopular move of devoting ERod to Pawtucket to start the season is very likely. This leaves Wright and Buchholz with one spot and the other likely in the bullpen. ..
  13. Rick Hahn doesn't return my calls, but at some point you know he asked for Moncada, Kopech and Swihart. Probably Rodriguez as well. Look what he got Rizzo to give up for Adam Eaton. ...
  14. Are the Sox really closer to the presumptuous designation of World Series contenders? They're in the conversation for "best team in thr AL", but Cleveland is the defending pennant winner and gets back two outstanding starters in Carrasco and Salazar and their best hitter in Michael Brantley. I'm not saying Dombrowski didn't improve this team, but let's not buy our AL Champion tee shirts just yet.
  15. While I like the idea of moving Swihart to third and ditching Sandoval, it may never happen. But we do at least know Swihart is most definitely in the Sox plan for the immediate future. Dombrowski made two trades last week with teams that need catchers, and still held on to Swihart. I find it hard to believe the White Sox were more interested in Basabe and Diaz than Swihart. ...
  16. Of course some will. But also some prospects already on the radar will start their slow fades into oblivion. So it all evens out...
  17. It certainly is presumptuous. On the other hand, dropped or not, Sale was still extremely expensive and did require emptying the farm system for a team that already had two Cy Young winners in the rotation. What the writer ignores is that after 2015, the Sox were a last place team, and the farm system was looking very important. After 2016, the Sox were a division champion, so the investing in the long term players looked a lot less necessary...
  18. Rutledge may have the inside track for the 25th roster spot, seeing as to how he was a Rule 5 pick that someone wanted back for some reason. ..
  19. That's only because Vazquez worked with Price before Pedroia had a chance to straighten tbe pitcher out...
  20. No, and I don't blame him. Swihart has already made the majors. Kopech is a headcase with a lightning arm who might burn himself out before he gets there. It happens...
  21. Exactly. Depth - it's a good thing. People make too big of a deal of the whole "fair" aspect. Hey, life isn't fair and players under high-paying contracts will have a better chance to make every team than players who are not.
  22. So... in order to get your point across about not asking a question with a question - which is a bit narrow; sometimes a question is the best answer - you asked a question. OK, from someone who is not a scout, Vazquez is fine defensively. The problem is - so is every other backup catcher in MLB. Whether you like defense or not, do you think Vazquez does any of those things better than most other catchers? Where do you rank him defensively? What catcher des he remind you most of?
  23. What do you think Vazquez does that separates him from the backup catchers of the world? I've described him as Jose Molina 2.0. Think he's more Yadier? Or is career backup Jose a decent comp? Is Vazquez better or worse than Ryan Hanigan was in Cincinnati?
  24. Saying Peavy was not a factor in the success of the 2013 team is a comment made by fans who look at his W-L record and ERA and ignore the trickle-down effect he had on that staff.
  25. Technically I compared Moncada to Williams. Really what I did was ask a simple question - do people want championship teams or star players? Because having the latter is no guarantee of the former. Also NO ONE thought Bradley was a replacement level player in the minors. Vazquez, on the other hand, many did. Other than being minor leaguers in the same system at the same time, the two have very little in common. Bradley's early struggles don't change this. As for offensive expectations, that's not the point. The point is defensively Vazquez is similar to a lot of other catchers. He isn't the game-changing defensive force many credit him for being and his skillset is very reminiscent of a backup catcher, a skillset that has nothing to do with the offensive expectations of an outfielder. ...
