  1. Or it might mean Martinez signed elsewhere and Wright never claimed that fifth spot. Both are fairly possible..
  2. I like the "multiple role player" approach. The core of this team is Bradley-Betts-Benintendi-Bogaerts for non-pitchers. I get the appeal of Martinez, but he is a threat to that. Another name worth mentioning as a role player might be Brandon Phillips. Grab him, Morrison, Cashner and a reliever like Tony Watson, Matt Belisle or, if you feel like a reclamation project, Trevor Rosenthal...
  3. If we miss Martinez, who else left qualifies as significant? Hosmer? Morrison? Duda? There are pros and cons to each of them, and primary con for each is that there is a good chance they are not significant..
  4. So now it's a matter of how long JD Martinez plans to hold out for $25million that he'll never be able to spend anyway...
  5. A statement that shouldn't be this difficult to prove in February. ...
  6. I hope not. The Sox season ended 114 days ago and so far his most significant addition to the entire organization has been Esteban Quiroz.
  7. At this pace, will the off-season be over by then?
  8. The point was out was eadily toppable by one of the worst fans in baseball. The Marlins panicked. All Stanton wanted was to go to a winning team - his for choices were LCS participants from the year before. By July 31st this year, other teams were very likely to emerge as options. Or injuries might have made one of those four teams more interested. But for some reason the Marlins thought it imperative to move that contract NOW and take a cheap package. Stanton's contract and age are really not all that daunting., especially compared to what players are holding out for today. ..
  9. It'd the Sox sign Martinez, it significantly reduces the chances of Hanley's option vesting. There are only so many places in the lineup. It would take a major injury for Hanley to play enough. And that injury might have to be to Martinez. In fact if the Sox sign Martinez, they might DFA Hanley. That eliminates the chances of his option vesting. ..
  10. Yes and Honolulu HI is the US capital city closest to the equator. But it's still not close to it...
  11. You're starting to reach a little...
  12. I'm hoping it happens. Martinez wants too much money for too many years and sounds like would prefer to get them elsewhere. I'm all for letting him go and upgrading elsewhere...
  13. At some point, Martinez is going to have to simply take the best offer, whatever it is. Teams are apparently very reluctant to meet his demands. And if the teams who lost out on Cain yet thought him to be a better value, were all offering less than $80mill for 5 years. Now they are supposedly going to top $125mill over 5 years? For the player they deemed a worse value? And who plays a drastically different position?
  14. Even 3/4 of Pedroia is a very good 2b...
  15. Sadly, this might be the most accurate post in the history of talk sox...
  16. Especially after that crap haul for Stanton that was apparently so bad, even Boston could have topped it...
  17. Not likely. Trade Pedroia to pave the way for who? Marco Hernandez? Brock Holt? Another free agent who wants too much money and to play on another team anyway? If you're one of those people who only wants players who want to play in Boston, you would never get rid of this guy..
  18. Heavy metal fans prefer Gwar
  19. The entire trade was conditional on signing JD. Although I'd DFA Brentz anyway.
  20. This whole scenari suggests Dombrowski is not "all in" on trying to win this upcoming season. "All in" would have him meet Boras' demands, This is fine with me that he doesn't want to ruin 5 or 6 years (or more) from now with another bloated contract for a player who a late30's player barely justify starting. So... start those backup plans, DD. Before everyone else does...
  21. Sure multiple teams might be pursuing him. But who? With Cain, there was a lot of chatter linking him to several teams and multiple 4 year offers. That makes sense considering he signed a 5 year deal that was likely the best offer. With Martinez, the talk so far has been Boston and no one else. If Cain's agent had little issue letting his multiple 4 year offers be known publicly, and it secured his client a fifth guaranteed year, then why no similar reveal from Boras? Are you arguing Boras shouldn't be doing what is clearly best for his client?
  22. If this stalemate with Martinez continues, the Sox could and should grab Morrison (or Duda, if Morrison is unavailable), which makes Hanley's vesting option less likely to vest. So that $22million, plus the $25million not spent on Martinez (minus the cost of Morrison/Duda) could be put towards Machado or Harper. I feel like I've said this before. But if Dombrowski doesn't do anything different today, why should I?
  23. No one still trade anything worthwhile for Brentz. Do Bryce a favor and simply DFA him for the purposes giving him an unconditional release. ...
  24. He also shouldn't let this drag into spring training. If Martinez insists on more money, he can't showing up late for work. ...
  25. If Hosmer turned down that offer from San Diego, he should for Boras now. Turn down $20mill annually to live in the city in the USA? For a player who isn't exactly the best player?
