He is good. But I think economics was a big factor. The most expensive player the Sox brought on that off-season was Cody Ross. Bard was an awful starter in A ball. I think it was more of a "best chance" of the guys they had than anything about Bard. ..

While the current Sox might be favored to make the post-season, is it realistic? At least right now? Last week on MLB Radio, Steve Phillips did a bit called "5 in 5 out". The premise was, based on recent history, 5 teams from the last post-season would not make the next one. (He did acknowledge that with a lot of free agents available, this was subject to change. But he also has air time to fill.) Anyway his 5 out were, in order of likelihood, Minnesota, Colorado, Arizona, Boston and Los Angeles. The NL West teams all sort of make each other less likely and I don't think he expected to hit on all three. But he had Boston out mostly based on division. The Yankees were his seventh most likely team to miss, behind the Cubs at 6.

I hold Ben accountable for his good and bad moves. But that off-season I remember him not being allowed to spend to the point where Marco Scutaro had be dealt in a salary dump. No way we could bring on a starting pitcher. ..

My main issue with Bard was that he always had control issues. Too many on BDC wanted to rush Papelbon out the door and install this guy as closer for some reason...

Not to mention, Boras is like 70 and could easily retire soon. And when he does, someone else will take over as the "game's greediest agent." And I am so so hoping - and solely because he has the most awesome name ever - that that agent is Bean Stringfellow...

Anyone who thinks agents are unethical and owners are the ethical party needs to familiarize themselves with the "reserve clause" and possibly realize the one and only reason the Colorado Rockies, Miami Marlins, Arizona Diamondbacks and Tampa Rays even exist. Hint: it had nothing to do with exploring new markets or expanding the game..

Damon also has no place to play in Boston. He wasn't very good in CF anymore. He wasn't going to supplant Manny in LF or Ortiz at DH. And he couldn't play RF because he threw like a right-handed thrower who was trying to use his left arm...

Chris Sale? To me, it looked like the primary reason the White Sox unloaded this guy was the problems he was creating (blasting the front office over the Adam LaRoche debacle, destroying the entire team's promotional throw back jerseys right before a game). Once the White Sox dealt Sale, they knew it ruined their chances to win and it set off the fire sale. But before all that, they had a very, very good team and could have easily competed for a title...
