I see it very different. I see closers as massively over appreciated, especially in terms of salary and fan love. The game isn’t always on the line when they pitch, contrary to public opinion. There used to be a stat called “tough saves”, which is now hard to find. But tough saves were saves where the pitcher entered the game with the tying run on base. Typically the league leader had 4 or 5 tough saves. Now the rest of the pitchers in the bullpen are the underappreciated ones, unless the team has a LOOGY. Those lefty specialist guys are overvalued and usually worthless, and in my opinion, detrimental to the overall success of the bullpen...

Exactly. It’s not like we call him “Coffee Boy” and insist he got fired ( which, ironically, would be true about Dombrowski). Now that would be hate...

Not true at all. In fact, Kimbrel was traded 8 months earlier for one top 100 prospect and a recent draftee who had done nothing at the time and nothing since. The Braves did also unload the contract of Melvin Upton in that deal, but took on the negative value contracts of Carlos Quentin and Cameron Maybin. Dombrowski gave up more top 100 prospects and more additional prospects and unloaded fewer bad contracts to acquire the same pitcher with fewer years of control at a greater cost per year. Why was Kimbrel so comparatively cheap just 8 months earlier? If he had given up all that and then also saddled San Diego with, say, Sandoval, I would have liked this deal better...

The Sox might have the better record, but consider this about Houston. It is entirely possible both Seattle and Oakland make the postseason. If that happens, Houston will have played over 1/3 of their regular season games against playoff teams. Worse record or not, they will have built their season playing a tough schedule filled with good teams..,

More than likely they sign him. But if DD makes a few off-season acquisitions he might be non-tendered. That’s not very likely considering how early in the off season contract tenders are offered...

In that respect, isn’t this more about Henry than Dombrowski? Cherington was building a long term pipeline. In fact, trying to keep Cherington on was one of Dombrowsk’s better ideas, since Cherington was good at scouting and drafting, whereas Dombrowski has a sportier record there. But then, according to many, Dombrowski fired Cherington, which, all things considered, was not a smart move. So according to you, Henry mandated the change, Cherington was fired for making it possible, and Dombrowski gets all the credit. That about right?

And Sox fans repeatedly console themselves over this deal because Moncada and Kopech are not superstars yet and are therefore busts. Hey unless Dombrowski pulls off a few miracle draft picks, this team could actually be pretty bad when 25% of the luxury tax money is going to Price and Betts and the Sox lineup features Sam Travis and Josh Ockimey and CJ Chatham. Because these are the guys who will help the Sox pay for Benintendi and Devers in arbitration. And it is very possible the Sox have no pitching then and no prospects to deal for it. If that is a last place team in 2020 or 2021, will you be content and say “well, we did really well and had a fun team in 2018” and be content? You know, like everyone did in 2014 and 2015?

Porcello is the same pitcher he was in 2015? Or Kelly or Hembree? And certainly Roriguez’ career numbers in 2015 were premature. Really Dombrowski has run this team the way a fan would - chase a lot of big name players for short term success. This is what he did in Detroit,too. And look at them. Now in Detroit, he did see something he liked in JD Martinez and his gamble on him was extremely successful. If he can do something like that again, it can mitigate the financial aspect of having no farm...

If your argument for Dombrowski's ability to evaluate pitching hinges on him reviewing one year of data, you're not winning me over. This guy is and has always been in a position to be an evaluator of talent. And he certainly knew Porcello before he got here...

Thornburg and Smith are not really great supports for your argument. Pomeranz has definitely fallen out of favor despite a good last year. So it's Sale and a closer. Why do you keep saying Dombrowski had n pitching and had to rebuild the entire staff? He did inherit Porcello, Rodriguez, Wright, Johnson, Barnes, Kelly, Hembree and Workman. Or do you think Thornburg and Smith are more important than the bulk of the staff? Side note - which acquistion took more baseball accumen - emptying the farm for Chris Sale or trading a pending free agent for Rick Porcello? Chris Sale and his talent were hardly a secret to anyone with a pulse. But why is it when a GM acquires a player like Porcello and watches him turn into a high level pitcher, it is written off as "luck"?

That's not how the math there works. Not really sure why you think the Sox would play .500 baseball over the past 68 games if Hanley was here (which is what it would take to still be 14 games over .500). The Sox had a .653 winning percentage with Hanley, which would translate to 73-39 record today if that pace held. Smaller lead, but still in first place...
