    I'm an anti-Pomeranz as anyone, but Kendrick is very, very likely to prove himself the inferior option. Guys like Kendrick, who NEED to make an impression in spring training, tend to try harder in order to get noticed and have a chance. Pomeranz, on the other hand, knows he has a role in MLB and just needs to not hurt himself. We see these types of things every year. Maybe Kendrick is now challenging Selsky for the Jeff Bailey Award. ..

    That's actually a better argument for him starting the season in Pawtucket and playing every day. Personally I've always thought he was a better overall player than the vastly overrated Brock Holt, but I would keep Holt and Rutledge over him in Boston for bench roles. However if the Sox need someone to start in the infield, I'd prefer calling up Hernandez and keeping Holt and Rutledge on the bench. ..

    Why not just insert Hernandez at third? Bogaerts has worked hard at his shortstop defense and made immense improvements and was flat out uncomfortable at third. Why penalize him (and the team) for his hard work?

    They did like Rutledge enough to take him in the Rule 5 draft so he must have impressed somebody.

    I put zero faith in ST at bats. But clearly this March's winner of the Jeff Bailey Award - given to the player who excels in spring training to the point where fans argue he NEEDS to make the opening day roster - might go to Steve Selsky...

    Are there any recent or older studies that prove the existence of clutch? Really so much of it appears to be fan perception and magnification of essentially small differences...

    He traded Rutledge away last July. The reason he didn't just sign Rutledge is that Rutledge wasn't a free agent and was still property of the Colorado Rockies, having signed a minor league deal with them 2 weeks earlier. Now why DD didn't try to sign Rutledge before Colorado is anyone's guess. Perhaps he simply wasn't on the radar. ( And really, if he was, that's probably a bigger deal. I'm ok with Josh Rutledge being an afterthought.)

    For a hitter, K/BB gives some indication of plate discipline. From a pitcher, it gives some indication of control. ..

    I I disagree that it's unfair. It's a loooooooong season. Plenty of chsnces for all. Just because a player isn't on the team in April doesn't mean he was dealt with unjustly. I know a lot of fans seem to think the 25th man was a higher priority than having proper depth. Last year I was a little disappointed to see a major leaguer have a minor tantrum over his demotion that was solely related to options. ...

    Kendricks stands a decent chance of being completely rocked in AAA and pitching himself out of the picture altogether. His history as a starter in the NL doesn't lend anyone to believe that a couple spring training outings have morphed him into a reliable sixth or seventh starter in the AL...

    Although the Sox might have the money to resign both if Price opts out after next season. Groome pitched in high school last year. I think it might be best to at least wait until he reaches AA before he gets penciled in to replace the Cy Young caliber pitchers. ..

    Slightly misleading in that there were no divisions before 1969, so for the first 54 years of that streak it was pennant or nothing. What this really means is the Sox have NEVER repeated as division champs. ..

    Selsky would likely be first. The only other option right now is Brentz. But if Selsky is hurt or already up, Craig is far more likely than Castillo, since Craig's AAV really isn't so bad. It's in line with other backup outfielders like Chris Young or Johnny Gomes.

    I actually think Craig has a better chance than Castillo, hit luxury tax hit isn't nearly as significant. And, unlike Castillo, Craig has had success at the MLB level. ..

    True, but his AAV is what maters, not his salary. As he signed a 5 year $31mill, deal, his AAV is $6.2mill/ I could see him getting called up if the Sox need an outfielder/1B/RHH at some point...

    Selksy is 27 years old (28 in July)and has 54 MLB plate appearances in his career. I don't think he is a trade commodity and not someone we can deal if the goal is to rebuild the farm. He probably is first outfielder up since the only other minor league outfielder on the 40 man roster is Bryce Brentz. ..
