  1. I do agree with Nick on one point, where I agree strongly - DH everywhere. Having two sets of rules for the leagues is stupid. It would be like if the AFC didn't allow kickodfs and just put the ball on the 25, while the NFC didn't have placekickers and every touchdown was followed by a two point conversion...
  2. Very few fans tune out April baseball, as evidenced by ticket sales in April vs. other months. The NFL plays one game per week. MLB has a virtual monopoly on sports in the summer. The competition is other forms of entertainment. ..
  3. So no Jonathan Egan and Michael Bowden. But yes tbe Sox overall draft history was crazy impressive under Epstein. His 2011 draft was probably the single most productive one in MLB history. ..
  4. With Sandoval, Holt, Marrero, Lin, and Peralta already in house, will third base even be a focus between now and July 31?
  5. Varitek over Pedroia?
  6. I seriously doubt this. Strikes me as speculation. The seasons don't even coincidence. Anyone ever heardvavftiend say "I'm sick of these losing Red Sox. I'm going to wait until October and start cheering for the Celtics instead."...
  7. The Sox had a pretty glaring window deadline in 2004, she Pedro, Lowe, Varitek, Nixon, and several other key players all hit free agency simultaneously, and the farm was fairly depleted. And yet there they were winning it all again in 2007...
  8. While I think trying Devers should have been done already, I agree he can't be counted on. (And I'm finding myself more and more impressed with Marrero). I think the Sox were positioning themselves to try some internal options (Peralta, Devers), but the play of Marrero and Lin worked out well enough. I'm not so sure a July 3b acquisition in going to happen, and they will simply roll with the status quo until, say, mid to late August when they call up Devers. If he flops at first, Marrero/Lin go back to their current roles. And Sandoval is put to sleep...
  9. It's also unrealistic to think all those players will still be in Boston in 2020. Trades happen, especially on teams run by Dave Dombrowski. Porcello may be a tradable bargain at some point. Bogaerts or Bradley may be dealt. A lot can and will happen. How many players from the 2014 Red Sox are still in the same uniform?
  10. If I was Rick Hahn I would hold out for a better offer than that. The lower you go into the minors, the less a player is worth in a trade. O ckimey is a nice prospect, but he's no guarantee of anything. Chavis is a better starting point, but also topple. I don't think anyone is going to deplete the farm for Frazier, but I think he gets more than that. Bear in mind the Yankees might also be looking for a 3b, and they can easily top thst offer...
  11. A Judgian CAREER???? The guy has 450 at bats. Getting a little ahead of yourself with his Cooperstown induction? I know it's hard to envision a player who gets off to a great start not having a grest career, or a great second season. But it happens, and if you need an example, I can think of one recent Story. (As in Trevor). Or, as a Yankee fan clearly obsessed with moonshot home rund, maybe you are familiar with the record holder for the longest home in the old Yankee Stadium. A fellow by the name of Joe Charboneau. Look him up sometime...
  12. If he isn't that fast, a 75% success rate makes him an outstanding base stealer...
  13. Mbeki That's the long term plan, I'm guessing. But Devers has no MLB experience and the success stories of Pedroia, Benintendi, etc won't make him contribute this year. If the Sox acquire a 3b, it will probably be a short term guy with some sort of track record. They could try Devers, but even Mike Trout was a flop on his first call up. How big of a window do you give Devers before deciding the pennant is more important thsn the farm?
  14. And that addional $14mill would be subject to the same taxes, etc. By your same math, another $13mill in salary would have only netted him another $4mill. Are you saying he's struggling with $30mill but $34mill puts him on Easy Street?
  15. Ryan Dempster made over $89 million in his career as a baseball player. If he can't feed his family on that money, another $13 million wasn't going to make a difference. ..
  16. I'd care about it more if it was true. Holt does play a lot of positions, but he plays very few of them well. He's a streak-hitting low power outfielder with very limited infield skills. Too bad he sees most of his playing time there. Really, he's Daniel Nava 2.0 who got miscast as an infielder. I hope his career isn't over, but he's very replaceable as a utility infielder.
  17. 9 steals in 11 attempts (82%) is pretty damn good for someone who isn't a base stealer...
  18. #11, i believe
  19. Bruce is having a decent bounce back season after sucking for the past 3 years. But I'd be leery of him turning back into a frog. If the Sox want him, hopefully the price isn't too much. That would be a double slap considering the Sox could have gotten him for next to nothing in March...
  20. It's also impossible for the leadoff hitter to come up with 2 outs, which was part of the criteria. ..
  21. To be fair, Holt was still in the picture at that time. ..
  22. Teams are giving up those blue chip prospects at the deadline more often now. Prospect value is down. That's how the Yankees rebuilt the farm quickly..
  23. Which was remarkably stupid considering the short leash Sandoval has always been on. They basically put him the 60 day DL if he gets soap suds in his eye. ..
  24. Onev problem that the Sox will face when making deals is the lack of MLB-ready talent to deal. If they want to get a worthwhile player, there can't be an Untouchable List. Donaldson, for example, would be great. But the Jays aren't trading him to Boston if Devers, Travis and Groome are all off the table. Prospects don't get the types of packages they did 2 and 3 years ago. If the Sox want a good player for 3b, especially one with some control, a package of Chavis, Ockimey, and Swihart won't cut it...
  25. While he may not view 3b as the primary need, I do not think that Sandoval is a face-saving player for Dombrowski. Sandoval's a Cherington blemish...
