  1. But then it somes down to whether or not a player would want $500K to play minor league ball and wait vs making $500K to play major league ball and have every day count towards free agency. For a lot of these players, free agency is the financial payday they have worked for their entire lives. Your plan might make more sense for the development of some players (like Swihart, as S5 pointed out), but that doesn't mean the players themselves want to go that route. The player and the organization can have conflicting goals in some cases, and that is possibly why they came up with the agreement as it stands...
  2. Their plan for him was definitely suspect, to say the least. Although it makes me think Dombrowski has a very different opinion of Swihart than Cora does...
  3. I don't think Swihart would want that extra option year and would much prefer to be traded to pursue a Major League opportunity elsewhere over spending more time in Pawtucket. He didn't declare himself for the draft to become a minor leaguer. And his demand to be traded does show some evidence that he is not married to the Red Sox organization and wants to prove himself elsewhere if that is what it takes, especially since he knows he cannot be demoted regardless of where he ends up. (Remember, he asked for a trade and not to be released. If he asked to be released, it might be an indication he was open to minor league deals if all else fails.) I'm sure he'd like to take over the catching duties in Boston. But I think he'd probably also prefer the chance to take them over in, say, Washington or Chicago, than in Pawtucket.
  4. Even if that provision was added, it still wouldn't address their two biggest potential concerns. 1) Becoming a major leaguer. For all of these players, that has been the goal since day one. No one ever as a child dreamed of one day playing in the Pacific Coast League. 2) Accruing service time towards making very significant money.
  5. I liked the Price deal at the time, and holding what has happened since against DD isn't really all that fair. But that deal can have some really negative repercussions. I'd rather have a cheaper or shorter team pitcher there and use the $30mill to extend as many as possible from Betts, Bogaerts and Bradley. The Killer B's should be the future of this team, not Price...
  6. Brian Johnson, earlier this year.
  7. Thoughts on the Price deal? I normally hate those type of long mega-deals for 30+ players, but I did like Price's contract at the time solely because of the opt out. But with everything that has happened since, I think it's a terrible deal that might have significant repercussions...
  8. Even if they could, why would any player do that? If the option is toiling away in the same minor league system or being released and getting the opportunity to fulfill the lifelong (and very lucrative) dream of being a Major League Baseball player, I don't think very many if any would prefer to stay traveling on buses. I am not a fan of sweeping generalizations to encompass the feelings of a large group of people, but this is one case where I am very confident. (And technically, they can do something similar. If a player is out of options and becomes a free agent, he can re-sign with his team to a minor league deal. While a lot of players do go this route, most of them are career minor leaguers and minor league veterans who don't find better opportunities elsewhere.)
  9. Would you undo the Price contract? It looked a lot better when there was a much stronger possibility that he might opt out after 3 good seasons in Boston. But given his off and on health, his overall performance, and the recent decline in the price of free agents his age, it does look like he will make in excess of $30,000,000 per season until he is 37 years old. And if he isn't the same pitcher DD paid for at 32, he isn't very likely to return to that level at 36 or 37...
  10. I don't think it's speculation that the Sox would be better off with Shaw than Thornburg, at least in 2018. There might be debate about Miley/Smith, but arguments can be made for both sides there, as well. But the bigger names not in the bullpen, yes the Sox are a better team in 2018 with Sale, Kimbrel and even what's left of Pomeranz. Now, when 2020 and 2021 roll around, hopefully we will have a WSC in the back pocket. Because the current farm doesn't look promising, and pitching staff will carry an extremely expensive and potentially declining David Price hogging up financial resources, and maybe a key starter like Bradley or Bogaerts heading elsewhere for bigger cash payouts, and this farm system does not look equipped to replace any of these players with anyone of even remotely the same caliber. But a lot can change in 3 years..
  11. Probably because Holt and Nunez are already holding down the fort. If either starts struggling like Devers or Vazquez, Lin starts to enter the conversation...
  12. Asuaje was the starting 2B for the Padres for a while. But yes, most of these guys might have already peaked. Beyond those already mentioned, Dubon and Basabe (CWS) look like the best bets to me to become actual starting major leaguers...
  13. Jete02 is a good example of the Token Yankee Poster on a Red Sox forum. I've rarely posted on a Yankee forum, but I did try it on ESPN.com way back when I was just starting, and that forum was A LOT less open-minded about fans from other teams. Their mods would ban anyone who didn't sing the praises of all things pinstriped...
  14. Notin, too. Those big deals are usually way to expensive for players on the wrong side of 30. This off-season does have a couple very enticing possibilities that do not fit that mold in Harper and Machado, but I think Dombrowski already spent his allowance and won't be a participant. And, really, where he spent it (JD Martinez) shouldn't give any reason for anyone to complain about that....
  15. I've never been on a Red Sox forum that didn't have a few Yankee fans. Would a Sox forum even be complete without one? They all will post negative Sox/positive Yankee commentary, and Sox fans do the opposite. And the truth is usually somewhere in the middle...
  16. Not according to HIPPA
  17. Yes. He also started that game for the Rangers where the team gave him 30 runs of support, which was the most runs scored by one team in a game since 1897...
  18. Yes, but he will pitch other games. The rest of the staff isn't going to stay healthy all year.
  19. If you're going to play the "honor the code" card, your teammate has to honor it too. You throw at his hip. You throw at his back. Anyway but the head. When you throw at another player's head, you're not retaliating. You're attacking. But then I'm not so sure this "code" is as big of a deal for MLB players as it is for high school and college. At this level, it's a career and a business and players on the other team are colleagues on some level and also fellow union members. And in some cases, friends...
  20. I absolutely wouldn't agree. Some players? Sure. But in no way did they all agree. Some might have even agreed with Pedroia and, unlike you, were happy he saved Betts from a season-ending beaning
  21. Marco Hernandez...
  22. That's not "sell[ing] out his entire team." That's trying to prevent the whole ting from escalating. He was the only one in the entire incident to wind up getting hurt, after all. What if he simply did not want anyone else to get hit? If the Orioles' decided to retaliate by beaning Betts, who has absolutely murdered their pitching, is Pedroia still on your s*** list?
  23. And of course, look who is in the picture with Abreu...
  24. All I am saying is the metrics don't, although it appears some are using them to justify his defense. I haven't seen him catch in over 3 years and I barely remember what he looked like back then. While I think it speaks volumes that the Sox have not asked him to catch even when Vazquez and Leon were struggling heavily, I do think they at the very least need to get him at-bats. He's no Mookie and the plate and will never be one, but at least he has some potential that might show if he gets enough of a chance...
