  1. Ummm... don't you have that backwards? Farrell overused Sale when the Sox needed to win down the stretch. And that overuse likely cost Sale the Cy Young. I'm fairly certain this means it was for a team goal over a personal goal. But I can see your complaint, if you prefer Cy Young winners over AL East winners....
  2. When a surgery is done for a normal civilian doesn't always match up with when it's done on an athlete. How many people do you know who have had bone chips removed from their elbow?
  3. Travis is a worse option than Swihart. ...
  4. Quite a few. Count the number of first basemen in the market and there's your rough answer. They all vacated somewhere...
  5. The one thing that might drop free agent prices this year is the anticipation of next year's class and the number of normally big spenders trying to get under the luxury tax limit this year...
  6. Because when you simply extend players on your current roster, fans think of that as simply status quo. And if it didn't work last year. It's when thou go outside roster and spend heavily on proven star big name talent that they get excited.
  7. You might want to make up your mind on this. You've already posted about the irrelevance of EE's contract since he did turn down a larger offer It's starting to look like you're simply choosing whichever side will make someone else look wrong...
  8. If either Bradley or Bogaerts had any interest in an extension, then neither would have hired Scott Boras...
  9. I hope the Sox sign Santana. I could also see reasons to sign Bryan Shaw and reasons why they might sign Matt Garza...
  10. The MLBTR prediction always felt light to me. If Santana is willing to sign for 5/$80mill, sign him NOW!!
  11. I'd rather have Ramirez than Shields. I don't think the more expensive Castillo is much of an enticement for the Chisox to dump Shield's salary..
  12. I like Stanton over most of the other options available, But apparently the Marlins want actual quality in return. The Sox might have to get creative to make anything happen here. Hopefully they don't give up on Benintendi so quickly and instead move one of the shorter term guys like Bradley, Bogaerts, or Kimbrel.
  13. If Stanton comes to Boston, he is opting out. He'd be here for three years and then try to get back to the west coast, possibly with an MVP under his belt and at the route old age of 30. The length of his contract isn't going to be a factor here. ...
  14. Posting fees were blind bids. The Sox had no idea what anyone else had submitted. The "bidding against yourself" angle is usually overstated by fans. The best example in recent years was Chris Davis, whom no one wanted, until Baltimore stepped in with a crazy 8 year $168 mill offer. Sure they could have gotten him cheaper, but they also wanted him playing for a contract he was happy with. No one wants a guy who is unhappy with his deal. ARod's crazy deal with New York also had significant PR implications. Reportedly the Yankees wanted him in pinstripes when he brought the all time home run title back to the Bronx. Imagine the campaign there. But a lot of that had to be abandoned when he confessed to steroid usage. ..
  15. Hey no one likes every Jerry DiPoto trade. I bet DiPoto occasionally makes a deal and then thinks"Boy that was stupid Luckily for you DiPoto will likely make 9 or 10 more trades before Christmas. Certainly he'll make at least one deal you like...
  16. Actually we won't know until Stanton is actually dealt...
  17. JD Martinez turns 31 in August. If he's the free agent, how is his future any brighter? He's two years older and wants 7 years. And also, not as good...
  18. The MLBTR prediction for Santan did seem light, although his competition also includes Logan Morrison (3.6 fWAR in the past 3 years), Yonder Alonso (3.0 fWAR the past 3 years), Jay Bruce (3.8 fWAR the past three years) and Lucas Duda (4.2 fWAR the past 3 years) which does leave his suitors with alternatives. I still think he gets 5 years, and is a good move for that span. Then again, how many years did Edwin Encarnacion (12.0 fWAR over 3 years prior to free agency) get?
  19. The real downside to Hosmer is how many times he gets auto-corrected to "Hoser"
  20. Unless Price returns to form next year. Hosmer is the unexciting option for people who don't believe in the cliff. If you like Martinez, his peak years will be better than Hosmer, but he will be into decline by the time the Sox key players are all ready for free agency. Hosmer will be the better player 3 to 4 years down the line. Martinez better immediately, but not for as long...
  21. JD Martinez' asking price is $210mill over 7 years. That's a lot of money for a guy who will probably suck in 3 years. Save the cash and give a mega-extension to Betts. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/11/jd-martinez-rumor-200-million-asking-price.html Carlos Santana looks better by the day...
  22. Archer is probably more than the Sox can afford. Certainly other teams can top the Sox offer. Dickerson has an OPS+ of 113 and 51 HRs in 2 seasons in Tampa. While not a prime target, he's not a bad option...
  23. While new reports have surfaced that Stanton is being open-minded to any new location, the Marlins are reportedly asking for the moon plus for him....
  24. Probably because it took him 5 years to figure out AAA pitching so they figured one month wasn't enough time to figure out MLB pitching...
  25. Has he said he doesn't want Boston? So far all I have heard is he prefers either coast. And the opt out appears to be an overblown issue. If the Sox don't give up much for him, it might get them out of the later unproductive years. But still get three years in his prime. If the Sox have to move Bogaerts (2 years) or Bradley (3 years) to accomodate Stanton or get the prospects to acquire him, those players will be leaving then anyway. As Branch Rickshaws " it's better to give up a player a year to early than a year too late". I'd rather have 3 prime years of Stanton than 5 or 6 post-prime years of JD Martinez. ..
