  1. He won't get called up but he should. Bryce Brentz is a waste of a 40-man roster spot...
  2. No one is linked to JD except Boston. ..
  3. I am not compelled to reveal my sources...
  4. Castillo is light years better than Brentz and Barfield. He is costly, but his defense is worth it. Or appears to be in his small sample size. In 723 career innings in the outfield, Castillo has 18 DRS. That number would have tied for fourth in MLB last year with Jason Heyward and Yasiel Puig. Only Betts, Buxton and Brett Gardner had more. And all of them played well over 723 innings. In fact, all were over 1,000..
  5. Maybe the Padres, who clearly have $140million kicking around, swoop in and grab him....
  6. So when does this flurry of free agent signings begin? I'm predicting a record number of hold outs this year even add the season starts. ..
  7. It's Rusney Time...
  8. I know the Sox want to prevent his arbitration numbers from getting out of hand, but at some point Mookie is going to point out he is still making less than Pablo Sandoval and Rusney Castillo. ..
  9. Every single soul in the media is 100% convinced Martinez will end up in Boston. The Diamondback buzz is apparently contingent upon trading Greinke, who happens to have the highest AAV in MLB history. There is no peep connecting him elsewhere So yes, I expect some completely unexpected team to swoop in shortly...
  10. Even the Astros weren't perfect with their high draft pick - Mark Appel being a prime example. In fact Appel was a bad pick for both Houston and Pittsburgh, I believe. ..
  11. Even the Marlins?
  12. That year he did try to shut himself down at the advice of his doctor, but he did come back for the post-season. ..
  13. Trading for Kimbrel, Pomeranz and Sale took us out of the sweepstakes for Cole....
  14. I think Gary Matthews Jr has that tattooed on his forehead...
  15. Are you really getting upset by this? They gave up a lot more to get Cole than the Yankees did to get Stanton...
  16. Corey Patterson was the #2 prospect. Sometimes maybe you do. Bear in mind that the best GM in baseball gave Torres up for a rental...
  17. The Pirates also got outfielder Jason Martin and RHP Michael Feliz. Minorleagueball.com has Moran as the#5 prospect and Martin at #13.
  18. When you have a guy they want, some GMs just don't back down from him. The Yankees probably should have considered giving up Torres...
  19. Matt Harvey also severely jeopardized his career (and earning potential) by ignoring a doctor's (and agent's) advice to pitch in the post-season three years ago...
  20. I'm sour about it. I admit it. But also at some point, it is simply time to move on. I am surprised about the lack of activity of the lesser players, however. I don't believe the future of, say, Lucas Duda, is that heavily tied to JD Martinez. Or that the future of Jeremy Hellickson is all that connected to Jake Arrieta. I'm a little surprised a lot of the tier 2 and tier 3 guys haven't been moved...
  21. I do think the Giants would still rather have Melancon. Steamer is projecting 0.3 fWAR (231PA) for Ellsbury and 0.7 fWAR for Melancon next season. Over a full season that makes both players roughly equal. But Melancon is still cheaper...
  22. MLBTR seems to refute that claim. After musing recently on a mystery team, Darvish again took to the airwaves today to address the interest of the Yankees. After first suggesting the team had not made him an offer, the veteran righty then tweeted he had received one — but that “the numbers are not correct.” That said, MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch reports (via Twitter) that New York has not, in fact, put together a contract proposal for Darvish. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/01/cubs-epstein-pitching-arrieta-darvish-yankees-mlb-trade-rumors-athletics-lefty-reliever-watson-duensing.html
  23. Why would the Giants do that? They have to put up with rapidly declining Ellsbury for longer than they would have Hicks. And they have to spend more on Ellsbury than they do on Melancon. And why do you think the Giants are so desperate to move Melancon? He's been there one season and he spent a lot of that injured. Unless he is not going to be healthy again, it's probably not worth it to them. And if he is going to have health problems, the Yankees might nix the deal. (Although they might not anyway if they can drop Ellsbury.) I don't think Adam Warren and Aaron Hicks are enough enticement for the Giants here. Especially since they are the team taking on $7mill and now they need a closer, which can be VERY costly. You would need to replace Warren with someone more appealing, like Chad Green. At minimum. Balances out the salaries better and doesn't screw the Giants as badly...
  24. Bancroft was the original example of cronyism. He had several teammates in the Hall, and they were the ones who elected him. Statitisically he was rather bland, and his main accomplishment seems to be that he played for a long time. Mazeroski had the defensive reputation, but his career totals are not much better than Lou Whitaker as a 2B. Whitaker did play 2 more seasons, but he also was an offensive contributor. Really, there are arguments for and agaist Mazeroski, especially over other players. But what are the arguments against Tiant, Mays and Hodges? And if you had to rank the 4 players I mentioned for Hall worthiness, how do you rank them? I know this is tough, since none of us saw most if not all of them play. But then I would also bet that most of the people who elected Mazeroski never say Mays pitch either, yet they didn't vote him in. In fact, doesn't letting Hall members vote create an obvious bias towards players the members played with and against?
  25. If I was a GM, I wouldn't touch Ellsbury unless the Yankees included Torres. But if they did include Torres, I take Ellsbury without question. In fact one of the problems the Yankees are running into with trades is everyone wants the prospects they don't want to trade. Teams will take Torres and Sheffield, but no one wants to settle for Frazier, Adams and Andujar...
