  1. There can be no Panda Belt. No belt is big enough...
  2. DD didn't trade away a "bunch of A-ball" players. He did trade Logan Allen, a couple of Luis Basabe's and Anderson Espinoza. But Margot, Guerra, Moncada, Kopech, Dubon, Buttrey and a fwe others were all above A-ball. And he released Ben Taylor for reasons that will never make sense, especially since he was still holding on to Bryce Brentz. Also, closers are overrated if you think they are typically worth market value. Most good closers have been failed starters.
  3. While I get your point, really none of us determine Kimbrel's fate anyway...
  4. Mike Stanton was also Giancarlo's name his first few seasons in the league...
  5. Swihart will be back soon. Dan Butler is as good as any Bryan Holaday type the Sox would find in the mean time. Old friend Tim Fedorowicz just signed a deal recently, but I hardly consider him a missed opportunity...
  6. She had a teammate who could throw close to 50mph underhand - which is pretty shocking for a bunch of 10 and 11 year olds. She absolutely hated catching her. Foul tips off the mask are one thing, but taking a 50mph fastball off the arm is pretty nasty for a little girl...
  7. And a robot could probably hit better than JD Martinez, but it doesn't mean I want to see it happen...
  8. Does it even take a big market team? Currently the highest paid closer by AAV is in Colorado. Teams like St. Louis and San Francisco will be in on the bidding as well. And if Washington doesn't bring back Harper, they will have an excess of cash to spend...
  9. But that doesn't mean using all your resources on a closer alone...
  10. I would be. And because he gave it to the Yankees, I still am...
  11. So you are not impressed that a human can determine whether or not a 95mph projectile on the border of an imaginary box is in or out of the box correctly 70% of the time? That’s insanely difficult. I know umps can anger fans more often than please them, but it is a s***** and extremely difficult job...
  12. He probably posts here under another name for baseball discussions and then uses his MADSTORK persona when he feels the need to complain. Like it’s his cathartic alter ego...
  13. Health could easily resolve all this, including Eovaldi. I do really doubt Price goes to the pen if he’s healthy. I just heard Dombrowski on MLB radio talking about how much faith the organization has in him...
  14. In 2010, Papelbon made just over $9mill on a team with an estimated payroll of $164mill, putting him at just over 5% of the payroll. In order for a $20mill closer to be a smaller percentage, the payroll would have to be approximately $400 mill...
  15. Not according to MADSTORK...
  16. And while pitches they’re eyeing rarely hit them in the mask, 95mph foul tips do quite often. And catchers have tons more protection. When my daughter plays catcher, I tell her “Go put on the armor.” Chest protectors, shin guards face mask, helmet. All umps get is a face mask and the ability to stand behind the guy wearing the actual protective gear...
  17. Not in favor of robot umps. And if you really think about the job of a home plate umpire - having to make a split second call to determine whether a pitch traveling in excess of 90mph managed to even touch the borders of an imaginary box - getting it wrong only 30% of the time is still impressive. I mean, have you ever even seen a 95mph fastball up close coming at you? I’m impressed they see it well enough to get it right 70% of the time on those borderline pitches...
  18. I wouldn’t be surprised if some team offered Kimbrel 4 years $8mill or 5 years $100mill. But Boston shouldn’t. If they do, who will fill out the rest of the bullpen? Will they be able to retain Kelly and afford Barnes? It makes very little sense to have a top tier closer preceded by a scrap heap bullpen, unless you want to see leads blown in the 7th and 8th innings opposed to the ninth. The bullpen will pitch roughly 600 innings or so over the course of the season. The Sox (or any other team, really) shouldn’t overemphasize the 10% that will be handled by the closer at the expense of the other 90%...
  19. Well, closer to $26 million when you factor in taking back Maybin and Quentin. Don’t forget, Atlanta was one year removed from back to back 90 win seasons. So if closers are so important, why did they suddenly let Kimbrel go and not even get back sufficient prospects to kick off a rebuild?
  20. Apparently it does when it’s Dombrowski. Also if you think a GM someone else likes is flawless might have overpaid, you can get accused of trying to save John Henry’s money, and damnit, we’re the big market Red Sox and owe a limitless payroll to our fans!!
  21. Extremely questionable given that Romine had 1 passed ball in the inning already and Holder was a lucky stab away from adding a wild pitch to the box score...
  22. Yet he only pitched in one Gme 7 of the World Series in his career and gave up 2 runs in it to turn a potential win into a loss. Guess he really was a choker...
  23. I see it very different. I see closers as massively over appreciated, especially in terms of salary and fan love. The game isn’t always on the line when they pitch, contrary to public opinion. There used to be a stat called “tough saves”, which is now hard to find. But tough saves were saves where the pitcher entered the game with the tying run on base. Typically the league leader had 4 or 5 tough saves. Now the rest of the pitchers in the bullpen are the underappreciated ones, unless the team has a LOOGY. Those lefty specialist guys are overvalued and usually worthless, and in my opinion, detrimental to the overall success of the bullpen...
  24. Exactly. It’s not like we call him “Coffee Boy” and insist he got fired ( which, ironically, would be true about Dombrowski). Now that would be hate...
  25. Not true at all. In fact, Kimbrel was traded 8 months earlier for one top 100 prospect and a recent draftee who had done nothing at the time and nothing since. The Braves did also unload the contract of Melvin Upton in that deal, but took on the negative value contracts of Carlos Quentin and Cameron Maybin. Dombrowski gave up more top 100 prospects and more additional prospects and unloaded fewer bad contracts to acquire the same pitcher with fewer years of control at a greater cost per year. Why was Kimbrel so comparatively cheap just 8 months earlier? If he had given up all that and then also saddled San Diego with, say, Sandoval, I would have liked this deal better...
