So.. why not at least start the process? I don't care when Pomeranz signs, but it's the complete lack of action that is troublesome. It's like Dombrowski fears calling Pomeranz' agent because he doesn't want to tie up the line in case Boras is trying to get through. (Hint - Dave. That's not how phones work any more.)

From taht article Drellich also tweets that although left-hander Drew Pomeranz is open to a long-term extension with the Red Sox, the two sides have not discussed one to date. The 29-year-old southpaw made 32 starts for Boston in 2017, pitching 173 2/3 innings of 3.32 ERA baseball. He’s set to become a free agent at the end of the season. I think this is what is the most frustrating. Let the Martinez negotiations drag out as long as it takes one way or the other. But that this whole thing has put EVERYTHING else on hold? I'm beginning to think that not only can DD not multitask, he can't even task all that well...

It's probably both. They were hoping for, say, 6-7 years in the $150-180 mill range and therefore asked for 7 years $210, giving them some room to "cave in" on while hopefully settling at the goal price. But this market appears to be nowhere near that goal price...

This might be the only leverage Boras and Martinez have. But it's pretty empty. I'm almost certain no high profile Boras client has ever gone to Japan. ..

I am not so sure it's that simple. As a man who negotiates for a living, it's a safe bet Boras doesn't actually ask for what he wants, as that would weaken his position, having nothing to give up. He presumably has a figure in mind, and then asks for X% more, giving him some wiggle room to accommodate both sides. The question then becomes - what is that X%? That number ultimately comes from Martinez, who is the guy with the actual right to approve or reject any offer. Just because he is taking Boras' advice (which he is paying handsomely for) doesn't change this.

Its funny how we all blame Boras as if Martinez isn't equally culpable. Boras isn't doing anything Martinez doesn't approve of. And he hired Boras for exactly the things Scott is doing. ..

Players sign contracts they're not happy with all the time, simply because it's the best offer. If Martinez was looking for $200mill and his offers top out at $125mill, he isn't going too not sign, and it doesn't make him happy. Right now the talk ia the red sox are "bidding against themselves". Is that what's going on? Our are they closing the gap in an effort to appease Martinez as much as possible?

I really don't care if owners make or lose money or if the money goes to them or the players. I just draw the line at tax-subsidized stadiums. I might feel different if the stadium then became public, or at least part of a park district (like Soldiers Field in Chicago.) But instead it's just fiscally irresponsible billionaires looking for help. As far as I'm concerned, if you can afford a $10mill setup guy you will only use for 60 innings, you an buy your own stadium. ..

I would call that a fairly low defensive projection for the only outfielder since 2000 to be credited with 15 Defensive Runs Scored in as few as 614 innings. Jarrod Dyson was once credited with 19 DRS in 758 innings, which is also very impressive. Dyson is a free agent who is 3 years older and initially projected to get a contract equal to the remaining years of Castillo

If he could do THAT at the ML level, he's an All Star. Realistically, he's Jarrod Dyson with a slightly better bat. So now we have to see what the market says Dyson is worth...

And if his defense is that good, he is silly to not add. Castillo has averaged 1 DRS for every 44innings and cost $36mill for 3 years. Jarrod Dyson and his career OPS of .677 has averaged 1DRS for every 58.5 innings and was projected to earn $36mill over 3 years, although that does look less likely right now. Right now Castillo is a costly AAA player with potentially game-changing defensive skills. But in the majors, he might also become solid trade bait. Or make Bradley solid trade bait. In fact, if I was a GM who needed a CF, I'd be trying to fleece Boston out of this guy with a bad contract I already had...

The Red Sox might have the best offer. In fact it might be the only one. Teams just aren't rushing to hand out big deals this off-season. Maybe they're being cognizant of how many go bad. Maybe they're just cheap. Maybe they're waiting for next off-season. Or any combination. But as of now, no one else seems to have a confirmed offer over 3 years except the extremely foolish Eric Hosmer. ..
