  1. Clay had certainly garnered his share of enemies among Sox fans. The same people who want Bryce Brentz to succeed and who think any BA top 100 prospect who flops was a wasted asset somehow can't forgive Clay for actually panning out to some degree. A minor league deal does no harm but to some even that is too much
  2. Exactly. I wouldn't sign any basketball player for an MLB team in the same way I wouldn't try fill a roster spot on an NBA team with a baseball player. ..
  3. I agree that Duda will be a better value and that Duda plus whoever that $17million difference is spent on will combine for a better season than Hosmer...
  4. Lance Lynn's agent is also monitoring this closely. ..
  5. It's like the Porcello deal; they're hoping to get the best years during the money. I don't like the length of Hosmer's deal though. ..
  6. He's also a much better pitcher now than when he was 2 years out of high school. Using only his career ERA does treat all those seasons equally. And really even his first year on Boston ended VERY strong after a DL trip...
  7. Yeah but most of the players paid for past performance don't live up to it in the bigger deal. Hanley. Sandoval. Etc. This was one of those deals where the hope was the pitcher would perform while actually making the big money. ...
  8. Also in 2016, Porcello had 3 tough losses in only 4 total losses. Only 3 of his wins were considered cheap...
  9. Steamer has him with a .886 OPS. ZiPS has a .916.
  10. Although EE could have had a better deal if he took his offer from Toronto...
  11. We're not talking about average humans. We're talking about players trying to position themselves among the best 750 in the world. The level of talent to get that far is unfathomable to most people. And the lengths players have to go to distinguish themselves even more so...
  12. There is something to be said for durability. A player can have all the talent in the world and it does no good if he can't get on the fIeld. ...
  13. How about we reduce the penalty to not calling him "Pork chop" for a week and you go buy yourself a beer and think about what you did while enjoying the smooth rich flavor. Unless you are under 21. Then you need your parents to buy you that beer....
  14. Tend to agree. Wright's OPSA differed by about 500 points in those two years with Leon...
  15. I agree Marrero is the best defender of th he five (barely ahead of Lin), but his overall game might be the worst. Really that choice for me is Marrero or Holt. I'm not much of a Holt fan, but he might be better than Marrero...
  16. Actually plenty of players have embraced the advanced metrics to improve their game. Josh Reddick, for example, gave a lengthy interview on the subject. Gabe Kapler did one also where he was shocked at the amont if data he was asked to go over for a minor league manager position. Again, minor league. Really it seems like the only reason players avoid fangraphs stats is to embrace the even more modern Stat Cast, which is more about physics and attempts to teach players to optimize their launch angle and exit velocity. Teams even have bats with sensors in them that help players optimize their swings...
  17. To me the metrics make it a level field for comparing. Watching one shortstop 150 times and another one 6 times shouldn't lead anyone to conclude whose better. But the best thing about metrics is they made me and a lot of other people look beyond errors and fielding percentage, which was a very common method of evaluating defense, and easily the most flawed. Eye Test defense is OK, but it has far more flaws than metrics do...
  18. Manny was bad all around. But when he was good, he was good. Not the best highlight reel defense, but maximum bonus points awarded for high-fiving a fan and still completing the double play...
  19. I don't go that far with him. But the bottom line is the Sox have better utility infielders. And when you are the fifth best utility infielder (out of 5) and you have no options left, it's probably OK to part ways...
  20. If only someone had thought of that every week once a week since November...
  21. He's 33-21 3.86ERA (3.97 FIP) with 117 ERA+ and a Cy Young Award on that contract. His 7.2 fWAR ranks him 13th among MLB starting pitchers in that stretch. He's also thrown more IP since that deal started than any pitcher in MLB except Sale, Verlander and Scherzer. You sure he isn't worth it so far? (Also - he's still only 29.)
  22. I know its only for a month or two, but I'm still not liking the options of Velasquez and Johnson as the fifth starter. Especially if another pitcher goes down before Rodriguez comes back.
  23. The Sox also moved Adrian Gonzalez to RF to keep Ortiz in the lineup. And hopefully JD works out better than Hanley has where sitting him has been a no-brainer. Not sure I like the catcher comparison. You're trying to compare the most physically demanding position to the least physically demanding position. .
  24. The Sox don't need all four of Marrero, Lin, Holt and Nunez. Lin will be optioned to Pawtucket. But I'm not sure how Marrero has lasted this long. ..
  25. I'm assuming JD plays the outfield in NL parks and not 1b. If he does play the outfield and none of the starters are injured, who sits?
