    Typically feels like that ate from the other team's media deciDing they need all of the best rebuild options for their best player. While JD Martinez went for squat last year, I don't expect Machado to be foo cheap. But I also Don't think he is going to bankrupt anyone. Unless the acquiring team is as well in the farm add Boston. I suppose that is the one bright side to having a depleted farm; we have no untouchable prospects to worry about losing. ...

    I consider that moving on to Plan B. Just because a move was unplanned or done earlier than expected doesn't make it necessarily "panic." Especially if it's easily reversible. I'd rather see the Sox gamble on promoting players rather than go out and sign another David Price or Pablo Sandoval. Those deals strike me as the panic moves, where the Sox do whatever they need to in order to fill a void, whether it's a good idea or not...

    This is so true. Once Sale and Kimbrel go, the Sox are going to NEED to retain Betts and a few others if they want to be competitive. There is no real talent on the farm the Sox can count on to be anything more than minimum wage roster fillers.

    So you would trade 5 years of Devers for 3 months of Machado and 3 months of a recovering Zach Britton? Britton has thrown all of ONE INNING this year. Are you certain he is the pitcher he was once? Also, there should be no overlap in willingness to demote a player and willingness to trade a player. The Twins just demoted Miguel Sano. Does that mean they're trading him?

    The Sox aren't getting Machado. Not with our farm system. What would we give up? Bryan Mata and Jalen Beeks? That's not going to pry him from Baltimore. In fact, the Sox are unlikely to acquire any big name this July. Maybe an infielder or a reliever, but don't expect a name bigger than Lowrie...

    What's the panic regarding calling up players you already have? That's just trying all your options before you do something drastic. I have no problem wIth any of the call ups you mentioned. To me, signing Rusney Castillo was more of a panic move than any of those call ups...

    Agreed. In fact, calling a player up from the minors should rarely be considered a "panic move." Internal moves are always first, since they can be undone if they don't work out. A true "panic move" would be unloading various pieces of the minor league system to hastily fill a need via trade. THEN you're stuck with the guy, regardless of how good he is. Look at Juan Soto in Washington. He is crushing in MLB despite being 19 and having all of 31 minor league at-bats above A-ball. Was that a panic move to call up him and his 1.000+ OPS in MLB? If the Sox demoted Devers today, and went with Holt/Nunez, would it still be a panic move? Devers would have given the Sox 125 games and an OPS of .755 over that stretch. That's not so bad, and beyond the year of service time, it didn't cost the Sox much to get it...

    The only real advantage Hanley gives them is that he would make minimum wage. They could sign him, and if a contender has a 1B/DH injury and Hanley manages to get hot, he might be a reasonable trade piece for them, and they could move him and his minimum wage butt for a reasonable farm piece while Boston kept footing the majority of the bill. If nothing else, he becomes a much better trade candidate than all their other expendable 1B/DH types.

    He certainly has not outplayed Holt. Nunez has an OPS of .564 since April 20. Holt has an OPS of .914 since April 17.

    Mookie has come up with 102 runners on base and driven in 20 of them, or 19.6%. That's an excellent percentage. RBI leader JD Martinez has come up with 176 runners on base and driven in 33 of them, or 18.75 %. (Most hitters run about 16-18%.) So yes, Mookie needs more people on base. But such is the way of the lead off hitter.

    Haniger is quietly entering the MVP race. Mike Leake and Wade LeBlanc are quietly becoming very reliable starting pitchers, especially after a very slow star from Leake.

    I think Rusney should have a future in MLB, but the Sox are not going to gamble on him this season given the potential penalties they would face from the luxury tax should they call him up. Next season is still in play for Castillo, but he will be another year older and runs the risk of declining past the point of usefulness. He is more likely to be nothing more than the highest paid player in the International League for a few more years. ..

    They do get reviews from the league office. But also bear in mind, a lot of what we think are the rules are solely umpire calls. For example, ask any amateur coach about what happens when a player making a taf drops the ball and he will tell you the runner is safe. That's not the rule. The rule is it becomes the umpires call if the runner is out or not. (Many umpires do use the guideline that the runner is safe when the ball is dropped during a tag, but the rule is that is it their call.)

    Or see if thre is an injury between now and then. Any deals made for slight upgrades between now and the deadline likely deplete the Sox limited trade resources unnecessarily...
