  1. Possible. Also possible the other WC team takes all 162 games to hold off another team. It’s just another factor to potentially consider...
  2. To me I’d think it makes get be situational. If the other wild card team had their ace ready to go and runs might be at a premium, it might be worthwhile to roll the dice with another pitcher against the Yankees and save Sale for an ace matchup in the WC game. But if the opposing ace pitches a day or two before, I might be more likely to pitch Sale vs NY and just bypass that game, knowing if I am in it my secondary guy might outpitch theirs...
  3. I think batting average might be the most overrated stat. Not only does it tell you all hitters fall into a very tight range, but think about what it is. It’s the percentage of times a player gets a hit when he does not walk, get hit by a pitch, voluntarily give himself up or manage to hit a deep fly ball with a runner on third and less than 2 outs. Pretty specific stuff, but I do have to use it as it is easily the most recognizable stat in baseball...
  4. The counter argument is that if you don’t star Sale, it makes him available for the Wild Card game if you lose or game 1 of the ALDS if you win...
  5. Absolutely true Henry has never been the problem...
  6. I always thought Minaya was an idiot. Fortunately for the Mets, Sandy Anderson is still the GM...
  7. The Yankees can easily afford deGrom, but it looks like Cashman is falling into the same trap that Cherington did and refusing to part with any prospects. I don't think DD has the prospects to make a huge splash deal...
  8. ISO is SLG minus batting average. It assigns the exact same value to hits as SLG does. It's based on SLG and could not exist without it...
  9. WE didn't know who would be healthy...
  10. Does this guy get paid for writing?
  11. This has been cited repeatedly. As for all major elaguers being clutch, they hould be by definition. While no one likes to acknowledge it, the highest pressure at-bats and IP come in the minors, where players need to succeed in order to prevent being stranded there for life.
  12. Most of Jim Duquette's trade proposals are not very realistic, including the ones he made to ther teams when he was a GM. ("OK, for Victor Zambrano, I can let you have.. oh.. I don't know... Scott Kazmir sound ok?") Also, at some point the Sox might need to hold on to a minor league SS. Bogaerts has one season left after this year and DD has already traded away at least 3 of his potential replacements...
  13. I have no problem trading Beeks...
  14. SLG is not a flawed stat. I greatly prefer it to batting average, which is about as flawed as it gets. BA tells you that basically every hitter in MLB gets a hit in 20 to 30% of their at-bats. THat's not exacty a wide range despite how fans like to treat it. Get a hit 28% of the time, you need to be starting. Get a hit 24% of the time? Go to the bench. SLG is the offensive stat that does allow for seperation, SLG can run a much bigger range, with most of the league falling between .300 to .600. It does favor XBH hitters, but then isn't this another advantage over BA, where a single and a home run are equal?
  15. I did not make that one up, but I have to admit people certainly understand it...
  16. He reportedly turned down trades of Bradley for Edwin Encarnacion and Yasiel Puig, but I think Dombrowki would deal Bradley in the right move. Having 3 CF's means he already has a replacement for JBJ, and Dombrowski - the man who once moved Miguel Cabrera to 3B to accommodate Prince Fielder when the DH position was clearly open - might not be as dedicated to defense as you believe...
  17. Most of the Bradley fan club are the people who also like advanced metrics. His detractors seem to be those who like "back of the cards" stats and use phrases like "automatic out." (And while OPS is a nice stat, OBP is really king here. When it comes to Bradley, OBP would be great and power would be a bonus.)
  18. I wouldn't recommend anything more complicated than tag or catch...
  19. I'm hoping he opts out after this year, although it's more likely that he flaps his arms and flies to the moon...
  20. And getting killed by the shift?
  21. He started 3 post-season games for them and had some of his best post-season starts for the Blue Jays...
  22. If we are looking at these pitchers as starters, bear in mind: Velasquez started two games this year, against Tampa and Balitmore. Johnson started two games this year against Miami and the Angels Wright started 4 games this year against Baltimore, Detroit and two against Seattle. Wright had one great game against Seattle and one he got pasted. The rest of these teams are all below .500 (except Tampa, who went one game over yesterday for the first time all season) and are not very likely to be post-season competition for Boston. Their starts for the most part appear to be picked to be against the weaker teams. While any pitcher can have a great post-season game at any time, I really would lack the confidence of these pitchers starting. I'd rather see Price out there...
  23. You wanted him to take one "in the ribs", verbatim from your post. At 100mph no less. Are you now implying his ribs are in the strike zone and need to be backed off? In the ribs at 100mph gets a player injured. Other than a trip to 1B, that's about the only other outcome. If the Yankees were to actually do that (which they don't appear intent on trying), I wouldn't mind seeing Aaron Judge take 100mph off the wrist. And then who would cry out intent?
  24. It’s reminiscent of that year when Jon Valentin hit like .118 in April and went on to hit over .300 (for what I think was the only time in his career)....
