25 players after September 1. If MLB adopts some sort of “only dress 25 players”, I’m ok with that. But when Bruce Bochy, for example, adds 6 relievers to his bullpen and makes 3 to 4 pitching changes per inning for multiple innings, he does go a long way to making the game difficult to watch. Also the shift speeds up games since it mitigates the need for a LOOGY. What takes less time? 1. Manager to walk out to mound and take ball from pitcher 2. Lefty reliever to come in from bullpen 3. Warm up pitches. 4. Full at bat from lefty hitter 5. Manager to remove LOOGY by repeating steps 1 through 3. Or 1. 3 infielders to simultaneously walk about 40 feet each 2. And then after the at bat, walk back. I’ll take the latter option...

As for 2b is there any reason to look outside the organization? Holt and Nunez are both back and Esteban Quiroz might deserve a chance. If all of them flip, the Ian Kinslers of the world has are not tough to acquire midseason...

I’d recommend Leon. He’s a good defensive catcher whom the pitchers, notably Sale, seem to work well with. And he has zero trade value, since there are always plenty of all glove/no bat catchers on the market. Swihart isn’t the most tradable commodity, but there are more reasons (catcher with versatility and some hiring ability) he might spark some interest. At this point, he’s basically Steven Vogt 2.0. But, hey, Vogt was an All Star once...

Three steps MLB can take for better pace of play 1) Enforce existing rules for how long a pitcher can hold a ball in between pitches. 2) No more expanded rosters in September 3) Keep the shift!!

Well, maybe marginally better. FIP tells you Betances allows 25 fewer runs over 900 innings. Not really s big deal there. Of course in my original question, salary and years of control were factors that significantly favor Barnes. So is Barnes worth 2 top prospects plus?

1) That doesn’t answer the question 2) But you’re saying Betances was really close to Josh Hader based upon similar criteria and implying the only difference was bad luck, which it clearly wasn’t (and you’re ignoring the massive gap in IP as well.)

Well, the two could very easily be closely related. They all fall under the same payroll. In fact, I’d say looking at a potential Kimbrel contract without keeping future considerations in mind is the very definition of short-sighted. As fans, we have the luxury of just wanting whatever it takes in 2019 and worrying about everything after as it gets here. But Dombrowski doesn’t. It’s his job to be mindful of future impact. And as he’s been doing it for a long time, we can only asssume he knows this and will do his best to act accordingly...

I think Henry gives away Ferrari’s as tips to valet attendants. But that has nothing to do with how much money he is willing to spend on the Red Sox, whether or not he plans to stick to CBA payroll limits, and how much he likes paying luxury tax. Ever met a wealthy person who liked paying taxes? He is already paying Dombrowski for his expertise in building baseball teams. As it doesn’t require an expert to throw large sums of money at every big name player, it is possible he has different expectations from DD than some of us do...

Who disliked Kimbrel? Some felt the Sox gave up too much, and he had his critics when he struggled (what player didn’t?), but I never saw anyone who didn’t want him pitching. Now not thinking it’s a good idea to meet his rumored demands is another matter. But it’s not the same as disliking Kimbrel. I like Ferrari’s, but I know it’s not in my best interest to pay for one...

That BABIP difference was not luck. Bettances was among the worst in MLB for giving up line drives. His HR/FB% was also significantly worse than Hader’s. Lots of line drives = high BABIP. If I were to suggest Matt Barnes was worth 2 top prospects plus from another team, you’d be among the first to shoot it down as ludicrous. Yet Barnes strikes out nearly as many as Betances, gives up fewer line drives (re: hits), fewer home runs, and unlike Betances, has a high BABIP that actually might be carried by some bad luck. Oh, and Barnes is cheaper and has more control remaining...

Yes. This is stupid. If you want to see your young players, make room for them on your roster like everyone else does in other sports. No more 17 man bullpens and 6 pitching chances in an inning...

I can’t remember my source, but I believe Beltre has said he wants to finish up in Texas. He might be prioritizing family at this point in his Hall of Fame career. Source or not, it certainly is possible...

So one year of a set up who could be making $7.5-8mill nets two top prospects plus another from a deep organization that has needs beyond the bullpen? I’d also doubt the Rockies sell so low on Gray and especially at a time when they’re coming off a postseason berth and already have a pretty good 1b prospect who needs a chance. Not to mention Bird hasn’t done anyone any favors with his frequent DL time..

Groome is only like 20, so he isn’t a lost cause yet. But given how bad his first couple years have been, it is disheartening that so few prospects have surpassed him in the rankings. Maybe when BA and Fangraphs and everyone else has their rankings, it will reflect differently on other prospects with respect to Groome. But do you really see 4 who should have surpassed him?

Absolutely true. And just like with managerial decisions, we as fans operate with virtually n facts and history. Who knows what previous offers were rejected? That said, the farm is undeniably bare. This is ok because it was well spent. But there’s no need to kid ourselves that being happy with the present means we have to be happy with the current outlook for the future. And by future, I am including potentiall trades between now and August...

A deal of Swihart (-0.3 fWAR) and Brian Johnson (0.4 fWAR) for Healy (-0.8 fWAR) and Colome (1.0 fWAR) does add up in that respects. And the Sox fill two needs, eliminate two surpluses and take on only the arbitration cost of Colome....

The whole year before going to Arizona. Technically Dombrowski has never really had the title of GM, but Hazen did under him despite Dombrowski handling the more public duties of the role...

If Swihart could be had so cheaply, he would have already been dealt and the Sox might not have released Hanley...
