  1. The Some relievers are crapshoots. Some are not. But even the ones who are crapshoots are that way in varying degrees. Adam Ottavino, for example, is much less of a crapshoot than Colten Brewer. And signing Pearce over any sort of bullpen activity does look now like it did then - a mistake. And similar to the ones that plagued DD in Detroit.,,
  2. We don’t know that. Possibly not. But I do know he’s currently rehabbing a knee injury that’s unrelated to the pinchrunning episode...
  3. The thing about Swihart is, at some point he just gets too old to be a prospect anymore, regardless of chances. And it’s not the way anyone wants their Big Chance to end up, but sometimes key years are lost to injury. Swihart isn’t the first prospect and won’t be the last. I really think prospects are rarely ruined by being called up too early. It’s what they’ve all been working for their whole lives. And nowadays, “not ready yet” more often than not means “still eligible for super two status” or “might reach free agency before peak years end”. I don’t think you can and should start pointing fingers and blaming management every time a top prospect doesn’t pan out or every time a player gets injured. It’s going to happen. It’s part of sports...
  4. I would like to see if he has his dad’s trademark plate discipline. You know, the kind where you can single to left on a pickoff throw to first...
  5. And what are we basing the “finished his career “ on? Are you trying to argue that Wright was durable enough to pitch for 10 more years yet still fragile enough that one shoulder injury ended it all? Also, if anything has already ended his career, you don’t think it’s the DV and PED scandals?
  6. In which case the Sox break even against NOT offering the QO...
  7. So are you now defending the signing of Pearce and saying the Sox were right to ignore the bullpen? And doing so by citing a few bad reliever contracts, several of whom are still actually outperforming pitchers (plural) in our current bullpen? At least you have that (-11) OPS+ from Pearce to justify everything...
  8. Are you saying the Sox would be in worse shape with Allen’s 6.00 ERA/1.88 WHIP than with the 7.45ERA/1.96WHIP of Colten Brewer? Or the 7.59ERA of Tyler Thornburg? In a couple more days, Heath Hembree might be in this list. Bear in mind anyone the Sox sign replaces the back end, not Barnes and Brasier...
  9. I thought and still think it was a waste. The upgrade from Moreland to Pearce, if and when it happens, is tantamount to a handful of runs per year and not worth downgrading the bullpen to it’s current state of a slot machine...
  10. Not something you could say Farrell did. Wright’s off field activities might have finished his career. Wright was already well over 30. Yet fans act like Farrell went all Dusty Baker to Wright’s Mark Prior. Get some perspective. The overwhelming majority of MLB pitchers are already done before they reach the age Wright was on that day...
  11. No. They have bad players, young players, or players who don’t contribute on both sides of the ball. But they don’t anticipate the bad players being bad. If they did, many more would go get a platoon partner...
  12. Nationals’ infield prospect Carter Kieboom (Key-boom) was also called up. Kieboom hit a game-tying home run in the eighth inning, leading to the call on Nationals’ radio “BANG!! ZOOM!! Carter Kieboom!!” (Courtesy of MLB Radio.) Nice call, although the last name is pretty much low-hanging fruit...
  13. Maybe you could argue he ruined Steven Wright’s season. But career? At the time, Wright was 32 years old and still had made three times as many starts in the minors as in the majors, with plenty of inconsistency there as well. His career was always going to be in question...
  14. Disagree. This is based on the myth that relief pitchers are inconsistent and therefore you can get. a good one for cheap. I think that it is true that inconsistent pitchers do become relievers, but paying for consistent relievers is acceptable. And platoons are small market baseball. It’s a strategy for teams that realize they cannot pay one good player, so instead they pay 2 players who only stink part time...
  15. No. It was about getting a starting pitcher to replace Doubtont or Workman in the rotation. Maybe that wasn’t possible for Middlebrooks. Although I’d have thought the White Sox should be interested in him since they hadn’t had anyone at3b since Joe Crede. But maybe they weren’t...
  16. I think either the Sox liked Middlebrooks or no one around the League did. Or both...
  17. Actually it was Iglesias vs Bogaerts. Fans wanted the idea of keeping Iglesias at shortstop and converting Bogaerts to 3b. But the Sox for some odd reason liked Will Middlebrooks at third. And they liked the idea of Bogaerts at SS for the future. Later that season they did employ Bogaerts at 3b, but reportedly he was just very uncomfortable playing the position and couldn’t get settled in. Apparently they scrapped the idea. In fact, due to frequent injuries to Middlebrooks, the Sox were actually using Iglesias at 3b and Stephen Drew at SS. They really appeared to think of Iglesias as a utility player since they had nowhere for him to play regularly. (The Tigers wouldn’t have either if not for Jhonny Peralta’s PED suspension.) Probably a big part of the reason he was expendable. Although I wanted Middlebrooks to be the one gone...
  18. He did a lot to rob us too. I remember Ortiz hitting a blooper into shallow left against the shift and Iglesias running further than ivyseen any shortstop range from the other side of 2b to catch it in the air...
  19. Only because of Bogaerts. All things considered, it worked out perfectly gor Iglesias...
  20. Well than he was right 50% of the time. Although Alex Wilson has only pitched 11 IP and has plenty of time to turn it around. With Justin, it was probably strictly financial. Although he does make less than Steve Pearce. It’s really surprising because DD hasn’t hesitated to add his former Tiger players to the Sox organization, including JD, Dan Schlereth, Jhonny Peralta, etc..
  21. I was surprised DD passed on Justin Wilson an Alex Wilson, since he’s acquired both before with Detroit. Justin has been good. Alex not so much...
  22. Why not? Catchers can’t play everyday. If there was any position that should have two co-starters, it’s catcher. Yet it’s done at other positions all the time, typically based on opposing starting pitcher. But a smart catcher platoon could be based on your own starting pitcher...
  23. Twenty years from now, no one will list the game’s best players as “Ruth, Aaron and Mays.” The proper way will be Ruth, Aaron, Mays, and Trout.”
  24. Not true. All that bench time has given him hemorrhoids...
