  1. We have 3 pitchers. We need more position players...
  2. Aaron Bummer
  3. In spite of the fact that the A’s have probably faced numerous RHP on the road...
  4. Dombrowski drafted Porcello and is very likely a fan, although he did trade him to Boston. But the big issue with a Porcello extension is cash. As the Sox have already commmitted about $100mill to Price, Sale, Bogaerts, and Martinez, and the ever-looming Betts’ contract figures to top all of them, there might not be room in the budget for Porcello...
  5. Even if the Sox pay half or three quarters or 100%, if the other team adds Castillo to their 40 man roster, his money becomes eligible for the luxury tax. And there isn’t anything Castillo can do about it. Not only would the MLBPA strongly discourage him trying to get out of his deal, but he has no incentive to. The only way out would be to announce his retirement and void the contract. But then he can’t do that and just become a free agent immediately. He probably has to wait a full season to “unretire” and become eligible to play again. At that point, all he is doing is costing himself money. He’s not even expediting the process. I admit I am not sure if there is a provision in the CBA about retiring and unreturing to be a free agent, but there must be. Otherwise we would have seen at least one dissatisfied player “retire” to get out of an unsatisfactory contract by now...
  6. MLB doesyhave the buyout provisions that the NBA has. Castillo has another full year of AAA left I’m him. He actually looks like he belongs in MLB, but that’s won’t happen. Even if the Sox could trade, they’d likely have to eat all the salary, which adds him to luxury tax calculations. Ditto if they release him. The real tragedy for the Sox is, he’s very likely the fifth best outfielder in the entire organization right now and could be useful to the parent club. But it flat out isn’t going to happen despite the Sox complete lack of outfield depth. The primary beneficiary of Castillo being in CBA purgatory would be either Gorkys Hernandez or Cole Sturgeon, both of whom represent a significant drop in talent...
  7. The A’s recalled outfielder Skye Bolt. Not sure if he has been mentioned on this thread yet, but he needs to be...
  8. Marte has two option years left at $12.5mill and $13.5mill. As cheap as the Pirates are, I think they can still afford him...
  9. None of which changes the fact that, despite JBJ’s offensive struggles, no one on this team (or organization) has made a good enough argument for themselves to be starting over him...
  10. And his wife, Incontinentia Buttocks...
  11. No need. He’s opting out. I read it on here...
  12. The bottom line is, JBJ is starting because he’s one of the 9 best options the Sox have to start any game, regardless of his lackluster offense. Cora cannot put a better team on the field with any players he has...
  13. Not to mention, the Sox bench players have all been hitting even worse. And Pawtucket isn’t exactly bristling with potential-laden alternatives. Gorkys Hernandez anyone?
  14. Ok so let’s say the Sox trade/bench/DFA Bradley. Betts can take center. Who takes RF? If the answer is JD Martinez, who takes DH? If the answer is Pearce (OPS .295), what exactly got accomplished here? Or does Chavis DH and Holt (OPS .273) and/or Nunez (OPS .360) get more at bats?
  15. Which is sad because he’s the best outfielder above A ball in the Sox system...
  16. I think the WM he was referring to was Whit Merrifield, not Will Middlebrooks or Walter Mondale...
  17. Thank you for jumping on that grenade for the rest of us...
  18. To be more specific, it’s a right-handed hitters’ park...
  19. Chris Davis was 0 for 55 vs everybody until he ran into Porcello. This is absolutely a step in the right direction for Rick...
  20. It’s not that big of a deal if he can play. There are dozens of worse contracts out there for players who can’t play anymore. And even at 40%, his contract would be a $4.8mill payment. Might be a lot to you and me, but what does $4.8mill buy these days? Right-handed middle reliever?
  21. Personally I think it’s odd that the Sox are OK paying him $12mill but find it necessary to avoid a $12mill luxury tax payment. I do understand the Sox have no choice with Castillo, but that says they’re best bet was always to get this guy active and see if he’s either usable or tradable...
  22. Are we also playing the game that all right handed hitters struggle against RHP? Chapman (.949) and Semien (.839) have both done very well vs RHP this season...
  23. In Porcello’s last 3 starts, he’s pitched 19.2 IP with a 2.28 ERA and only walked 5 hitters. He walked 12 in his first 11.1 IP this year. It’s not just this one game that you’re casually dismissing as if 8IP 2 hitters are a daily thing...
  24. Of course, this has been JBJ’s worst month since August, 2014...
