  1. Also ERA+ and ERA- are better than ERA. A 2.50 ERA in Coors isn’t the same as a 2.50 ERA in Petco. But a 115 ERA+ is the same everywhere...
  2. I actually don’t like ERA for relievers, especially closers. If they come in with men on base and those men score, the relievers ERA for that game might still be 0.00. That’s not really representative of the poor job he did. Of course, fWAR isn’t great, either, since nearly all relievers have 2.0 or below with the majority being below 1.0. So I tend to just like WHIP and K/BB...
  3. Right. Let’s go back to complaining about the bullpen. Did you hear DD says he’s done now?
  4. Maybe that’s because catchers are too fat!!
  5. He’s playing baseball, not performing surgery on babies. Let’s have some perspective here...
  6. I don’t follow Moylan on Twitter, but some of his tweets I have seen in the past do make me think he’s kind of a tool. Maybe I just catch him on bad days...
  7. Velasquez shouldn’t make the team if every is healthy; he should go to Pawtucket as a sixth starter option.
  8. Oh I do. Leon is the one catcher I don’t advocate the Sox getting rid of in whatever fashion. I think they should explore the trade market for Vazquez as well (but I doubt DD does)...
  9. They do have metrics for pitch- framing, but when looking at fWAR, if the catcher steals a strike, credit is given to the pitcher...
  10. Also worth mentioning, Koji didn’t pitch in MLB until he was 34 and those numbers span through age 41. Kimbrel turns 31 in May...
  11. Going by saves isn’t really a good measure. Koji did spend 4 years in Boston, but 2 of those were a last place team, which presumably meant fewer save chances. Koji did have a lower ERA, and also a lower WHIP. ..
  12. That all shows up in the pitchers’ numbers...
  13. His career numbers in Boston are better than Kimbrel’s...
  14. So according to Olney, DD has said he’s done with the bullpen . (Is DD to be believed? That’s another thing altogether.) If DD is done, it looks like the Sox have a bullpen with Barnes, Brasier, and Hembree as locks. Johnson is probably a lock, too. Thornburg and Workman are likely. That leaves at least one spot for at least one of Tapia, Brewer, Mejia, Lakins, and Poyner while Wright, Smith and Putnam all probably start the year on the DL...
  15. Or total. And according to Fangraphs, the Sox got less than zilch from their catchers...
  16. It’s been a while since he pitched - he’s thrown all of 7 minor league innings in 3 years. But he was very good once. Between Mejia and Erasmo Ramirez, DD may have snuck two talented arms into the organization...
  17. Over small samples, it’s useless. But given a decent sample size, it wouldn’t surprise me if Centeno maintained better numbers than Swihart...
  18. What’s the worst thing if he gets burned out? He stops hitting? Honestly , the Sox got zilch from their catchers last year and still won 119 games. If Juan Centeno catches a few dozen games, what’s the impact?
  19. I think Steve Piscotty would agree...
  20. This is actually kind of funny. Catcher is probably the Sox deepest and also worst position. Yes, there will be an affect if one of our catchers goes down, but then the drop off from Swihart to Centeno might be the smallest dropff we have from MLB to MiLB at any position. I think it’s a little overly cautious to worry about who takes over the second string if the backup catcher gets hurt. I mean, who takes over if the starting shortstop gets hurt? Or any of the outfielders? And for all we know, the “step down” from Swihart to Centeno might even be a step up...
  21. Or... crazy thought here. I was agreeing with cp that he isn’t done yet. Come to think of it, me agreeing with cp176 really is a crazy thought...
  22. Oh no. Only baseball names only around here. And little Brock Dyckshoorn Notin knew what she was getting into...
  23. Agree. It makes zero sense that the Sox have two backup catchers and zero backup outfielders. And while they do have two backup infielders, neither can play shortstop very well...
  24. Who doesn’t? I was thinking of naming my daughter Carter Capps...
  25. Seriously though, can Carter Capps be far behind?
