  1. So does that mean that, if the Sox add no one else, they could trade for Wade Davis on July 31 and still not go over?
  2. I’d take Kimbrel back on a one year deal yesterday. My opinion of him has always been that I’d prefer the Sox not spend big money long term on a closer with Bogaerts, Bradley and Betts all hitting free agency within 2 years...
  3. I think his definition of an established closer includes the criterion “cannot pitch in Boston.”
  4. Yeah. I’ll make my prediction now. The Sox opening day closer is Jenrry Mejia...
  5. Just wondering, is there any reason why Jenrry Mejia doesn’t count as an established closer?
  6. Definitely the latter. I really doubt Dombrowski would risk his job to needle Henry. Especially since Henry has the easiest comeback ever. “You’re fired!! On your way out, send in someone who doesn’t spend his budget on a backup first baseman before he has a plan for the bullpen.” And DD does have a long history of liking radar gun readings. I’d be surprised if there was anything else about Brasier that intrigued him...
  7. Why add the expenditure if you plan to sell anyway?
  8. The thing is it looks like Dombrowski has been planning for Kimbrel’s departure for a couple years, stockpiling young, cheap, budding closers like Smith and Thornburg. But it has most definitely not hone according to plan...
  9. Premature. They technically haven’t failed to sign Kimbrel yet...
  10. Who Rodney? He had 12 career saves. The Red Sox have 4 pitchers with that many or more career saves now. What did Fernando Rodney do before 2006 to earn the title “established closer” that Tyler Thornburg hasn’t already done? Or if you were talking about Todd Jones? He was 38!! This was FOUR YEARS after he retired from baseball, got hired by The Sporting News as a writer, then unretired from baseball and did both careers at once...
  11. Also the purpose of the NFL Draft is to provide hope for the last place teams, which can be measured in ticket sales. First round picks rarely make a difference anywhere except the box office. The NFL draft is an opportunity for the worst teams to improve. But what about the worst teams in MLB? The Blue Jays have spent all of $11mill on players this off-season with no money on 2020. The Giants have spent $8.5mill this off-season. Again, all of it in 20-9. The Marlins have spent $2mill this off-season on MLB players. How does this team expect to attract fans when the biggest addition to a last place team is Neil Walker? The Orioles have yet to spend their first dollar improving their MLB product. This is s team with a solid history and an established fan base. And I assume their fan base hates the owners right now...
  12. I still think the Sox should squeeze one more actual MLB arm in there. I hope at least one of Tyler Clippard, Nick Vincent, Aaron Loup, Xavier Cedeno, Alex Wilson, or Derek Law might fit the nudge. The Dbacks also DFAd Jake Barrett, a briefly tenured closer with 95mph heat. DD might throw a minor league deal that way as well...
  13. Think of Kimbrel as an ex-girlfriend. Sure it was fun for while, but it’s time to move on...
  14. Maybe it’s called “Operation Durbin Feltman”...
  15. Can we count the 2006 Tigers? They used 38yo underwhelming journeyman Todd Jones most of the season. But that year also launched the closing career of Fernando Rodney, which still continues to this day. Oh and they went to the World Series...
  16. Which makes it even more confusing that he structured Stanton’s contract for a trade...
  17. The Marlins did the same thing with Carlis Delgado, but his expensive years were $12-15mill. If the plan was to dump him before the expensive years, it was a serious gamble. I mean, what if no one wanted him at that price? Or if an injury hurts him? If they didn’t want to pay him, wouldn’t it have made sense to trade him when he was still cheap?
  18. It is a little slanted in that article. I mean, it’s not solely because of a deal they give Kimbrel. They have 40 other contracts counting towards that amount...
  19. Not to mention the successes Dombrowski had in the past with no name pitchers at closer. Pitchers like Trevor Hoffman, Rob Nen, Matt Mantei, and Fernando Rodney, to name a few...
  20. I hope they didn’t decide to do it “for fun.” My thoughts are they concluded 1) bullpen pitching at current prices are bad investments (for baseball purposes) and 2) Dombrowski has a long history (with mixed results) of not spending on bullpens. That he saw his successor win a WS in Florida with his former acquisition Braden Looper at closer probably didn’t sway him against the idea...
  21. I don’t get why they cut off the spending. It could be something more along the lines of relief pitchers being the worst investment statistically? I could see that. Closers cost $15-18mill. Set up guys cost $7-9mill. And together they provide maybe 3 fWAR. So maybe the thought was to just not soend $22-27mill on maybe 3 fWAR worth of talent? I could that that logic being applied here, but if you try it, it helps to have a better plan for replacements than career minor league talent with fastballs that’s harder to control than kites in a hurricane...
  22. How many has it cost us so far? Chances are really good neither Runzler nor Ellington ever see Fenway...
  23. He’s not walking away from all that money. There’s a better chance he tracks you down next offseason and cuts you a check for 25mill than there is of him retiring just so DD can get somebody for the bullpen...
  24. DD is looking for the next Brasier. Runzler throws about 96 mph. Ellington is closer to 98-99 mph...
  25. As he is a professional he should be more accurate...
