Well we could talk about all the new faces in the clubhouse. I think the attendants staff is bringing on a new intern. I hope he works out. Also I hear they’re switching from Tide to Gain. I’m not so sure I like this. Tide was good enough last year; why mess with what’s working?

You’re right!! Career ERA is the best stat EVER!!! I can’t believe anyone even came up with other stats!!! Why it not only tells you how good a pitcher is, but it also does windows and makes a fine dessert topping!! And the best thing about it - it cannot be improved upon because it is solely based on pitcher ability!!! It’s so perfect, next to it perfection itself is a giant pile of poop!!!

But how much better are the Yankees and Rays? The Yankees finished EIGHT GAMES behind the Sox last year. Do your additions - which so far is just Paxton, Ottavino, LaMahieu and a half season of Britton - make up an eight game difference? Especially factoring in the losses of Robertson and at least a half season of Grigorius? Even if your adds make the Yankees four games better and the Sox (and only the Sox, because apparently Yankees never regress) are 3 games worse, that’s still not enough...

Preventing runs might be the pitcher’s goal, but he shares that goal with 8 other defensive players whose contributions exist but are very tough to distinguish. But if I’m judging a career, I’m ok with career ERA. It’s readily understood. But depending how long that career is, it might not be the most representative of what a player can do tomorrow...

Pitching for an entire career in Coors or Petco, or eve just a large chunk of it, doesn’t get “ironed out” in career ERA...

DRA is old and hard to find. I think FIP, xFIP and SIERA are all good measures...

To me, that’s situational. If I’m looking at a pitcher for Hall of Fame candidacy, I like career ERA. But if I’m trying to decide if the Sox should acquire a pitcher or if one they did acquire was a good choice, I only look at the last 3 years. Nothing a pitcher did back in 2012 is relevant to how he’ll pitch today...

The Last season, using payroll numbers from Sportrac, the top ten payrolls produced 4 playoff teams (Boston, Chicago, Houston, New York). The bottom 10 payrolls produced 3 (Oakland, Atlanta, Milwaukee). And the middle ten produced 3 (Cleveland, Los Angeles, Colorado). Not the most exact method, but it certainly raises questions about how important spending is...
