  1. Heck, Barnes might not even close. Obviously only Alex Cora’s opinion matters, but most in the media think Ryan Brasier is the front runner for the job. Brasier is not arb-eligible next year. And as odd as it seems to say, not being arb-eligible might give him an edge for the closer role...
  2. It looks like the Sox have about $114mill set for 2020, assuming JD opts out and not including raises for Betts, Bradley and Benintendi (but it does include their current salaries). That would give them about $76mill to replace Sale, JD, and Bogaerts and someone for 1b (Chavis/Ockimey/Travis?). And there is no guarantee JD opts out, because at age 32, will he be able to top the remaining 3years/$63mill he has left? There is no really good comp on the market with the closest being AJ Pollock, who did not even come close to that AAV. So if JD stays, the Sox have $54mill to give raises and replace Sale and Bogaerts. Resetting is possible if the Sox can replace Bogaerts internally with CJ Chatham, assuming Chatham doesn’t suck. But if it isn’t possible, I’m not so sure Henry is going to lose any sleep...
  3. I think out of Betts, Bogaerts, Bradley, Martinez, and Sale, Sale is the last one I think the Sox should extend (just behind Bradley), simply because I just don’t think he will be worth the contract he commands. Now if that deal can be limited to 4 years or less, I’d like it ALOT more. The big issue is the Sox have absolutely no one to replace him coming up. Mike Sharwyn ain’t gonna do it...
  4. I have to agree. WAR is the subject of far more bad puns (The “what is it good for?” line got old years ago.) and baseless attacks than BA and ERA and RBIs old-style baseball card stats. Don’t get me wrong; those stats do get attacked. Just typically with logic about their flaws as opposed to complaints about their existence. Although I was listening to MLB Radio the other day, and a fan called up to bash Harper with “he’s only hit 40 HRsce and only got 100 RBIs once” and the host shot back with “when you get your head out of 1988.” But then sports radio hosts are not always known for their tolerance...
  5. He doesn’t want anyone to confuse it with a partial dumpster fire. Those can be useful to hobos sometimes...
  6. So the AL East has already been clinched? Guess I can’t blame DD for not wasting money on the bullpen chasing an unwinnable division...
  7. And no one from the Sox farm system is capable of playing Division 3 high school baseball, let alone in the AL East...
  8. He only plays 61% of his games in California...
  9. Do they really have that far to go? While they have a serious need for rotation help, the fact that they have 10 players ranked on nearly every top 100 list gives them the ability to trade for any available player, plus possibly a few who aren’t, and still have a small resource of dirt cheap players to help keep the payroll down while contributing...
  10. Some of us just call him “Johnny”...
  11. No. We’re talking about Moe Lester. Keep up!!
  12. They’d be smarter to ignore Harper and pursue Keuchel. Also, I assume Machado returns to 3b, bit if he is the SS, that gives the Padres an outstanding trade chip in Tatis..,
  13. I feel bad for the White Sox. They did everything they could to make their team a welcoming place for Machado. Everything but offer enough money....
  14. Of course they might not want him. But by acquiring Vazquez, they would increase their chances of one catcher breaking out. Plawecki still has options left and, really, isn’t much of a catcher anyway. At least defensively. If Cleveland pursued a trade like this, they would increase their catching depth, which, like Boston, is their worst position. Now thy might prefer a catcher better than Vazquez (of course they do), but they’re not going to get one for Danny Salazar...
  15. Lester? Hell, I’m still arguing about Babe Ruth leaving!!
  16. A simple search through the MLBTR archives lists the Red Sox, Phillies, Astros, Padres, Brewers, Braves, Giants, White Sox, Blue Jays, and Angels as all being interested in Eovaldi, which represents one third of MLB. And those are just the teams whose interest was public. Certainly all didn’t make offers, but that’s too much interest to think a discount could be had.
  17. If a player officially retires mid-contract, they forfeit all remaining salary. It’s rare, but Gil Meche and Ryan Dempster both did it...
  18. Probably exactly what happened. And it looks like Nate got offers close but not quite as good as 4 years $68mill...
  19. I only kept it as possible. And cut your Uncle Ruthie some slack. He means well, and he did give you that awesome chocolate bunny for Easter. Not the one filled with marshmallow; that one was from your weird Aunt Marvin. I’m talking about the Nestle Crunch one...
  20. Without digging too deep, Philadelphia was in on him. I think it’s a safe bet Dombrowski didn’t just throw those numbers out there without there being competitive offers. Otherwise he would have just extended him before he filed for free agency..,
  21. Unless the Red Sox won those 4, which would give them 13. Keeping Hall of Famers Ruth and Pennock and the rest of that supporting staff does make that more possible. In the meantime, your aunt can identify as your uncle...
  22. Would you trade Vazquez for Danny Salazar? Salazar makes $4.5 mill this year nd has one arb year left. Vazquez has 3 years $13.5 mill left plus an option and a $4.5mill AAV. Steamer projects Salazar to be worth 1.0 fWAR in 31 games (6 starts) and Vazquez to be worth 0.9 fWAR IN 279 PA (about half a season). Cleveland’s catching situation is dicey, with Roberto Perez and Kevin Plawecki as potential starters and they have a manager possibly slightly familiar with Vazquez, who was drafted in 2008. Salazar was once one of the most promising starters in MLB until he was completely derailed by injuries. If he can recover - BIG IF - he could easily replace starter depth lost if - small if - Porcello leaves for free agency. Until then, Salazar could function as a reliever in the Sox weakest area - the bullpen. Salazar is a HUGE gamble, but so is anyone else who could be acquired for any Sox catcher...
  23. If John Henry starts dumping an entire foundation worth of players into NY to finance Arsenal football or auto racing or another trophy wife, your point might have some validity. But if Frazee had been more into baseball and held on to Ruth, Mays, Pennock, Jones, Bush, etc. the Yankee fans would not be clinging to 27 rings anytime soon...
  24. I can admit I wanted DD to package some money (including Moreland) to Philadelphia for Carlos Santana. But I guess the status quo on a 108 win team isn’t necessarily a bad thing...
  25. Well, the next guy might. But really, so far only Corbin and Eovaldi have gotten them. Keuchel meanwhile is still waiting for the proverbial “next guy.”...
