  1. I think there’s a pretty good chance that you Yankee fans are equally disappointed in your bullpen. Sure you have all the high-priced talented arms, but they’re being managed by Aaron Boone. That’s like buying a brand new Ferrari and paying for every available option and tuning the engine for high performance. And then having it driven by Dorko the Chimp...
  2. No, that’s the trademarked name of a card game app you play on an Apple phone...
  3. If Chavis really did tweet this, I am officially his newest fan. That’s just awesome!
  4. Merloni’s first year in Boston was 1998. That’s 7 years after Vincent banned steroids and 6 years after an Oakland trainer was arrested for distributing steroids to players. Well into the Steroid Era, not at the “forefront”. In fact it was the same year McNamee confessed to injecting Clemens for the Yankees...
  5. At the forefront? So you know the status of the other 29 teams?
  6. Well DD apparently wants to trade a catcher for starting pitching to hedge against losing Sale and Porcello, which seems like a ludicrous goal for any of the three. But if he wants a pitcher back, he’s better off trading Swihart. I see no real reason to favor one catcher over the other with Swihart and Leon. Both have good points and bad points and neither is indispensable. Someone certainly could hit the DL to enable keeping both. But it would probably have to be a position player since they’re likely to need all12 pitchers early on...
  7. They could do that, but they might prefer to DFA Swihart as he could get valuable playing time in Pawtucket. However one has to wonder if Dombrowski has learned his lesson about DFAing a player he hopes can clear waivers after learning the hard way with Ben Taylor...
  8. Well, the Red Sox currently have 11 pitchers out of options and a rough schedule to start the season to the point where Brian Johnson is expected to start the sixth game. And since most pitchers come out of the gate on pitch counts or shorter outings, the bullpen is a big factor. And even if the Sox decided to go with one fewer pitcher, that only buys time. Unless there is an injury, the issue remains. And Leon just isn’t good trade bait. He has one year left, is one dimensional, and it does very little for the Sox to pay part of his salary and keep him on the budget if they are as concerned with the upper tax limit as they have been acting. And even then, which catcher between Leon and Swihart will get a better player back? If you were a GM for another team, which one would you want to acquire?
  9. Well Dombrowski has said he is actively trying to trade a catcher, which makes keeping 3 catchers less likely. As it stands, the Sox cannot fit all 3 on the 25 man roster right now. And Sandy Leon, with one year at $2.75mill, is virtually untradable. Any team looking for a defensive catcher could easily sign Martin Maldonado for the same or less. And Maldonado is a better hitter...
  10. Mike Zunino has only been worth 0.7 fWAR less than Sanchez over the last 2 seasons and is escaping Safeco...
  11. I’m not so worried about the impact Jhonathan Diaz has on the Sox bullpen this season...
  12. Simple. They needed Papi...
  13. Last year, Shreve pitched only 2 games for the Yankees where he entered the game because the starter didn’t complete the fifth inning and only got hit hard in one of those games. The year before, he had 9 such games and was ineffective twice. Let’s not exaggerate his failures too much...
  14. Jeter02? As in Jete02 from BDC?
  15. Which is exactly why I created the Jeff Bailey Award. Or, if you like a Latino touch, the Pedro Ciriaco Award...
  16. It's not about the number of games. Shreve pitched in 60 games for the Yankees last year, but only 14 of them involved him coming into a game protecting a 2 run lead or less or in a tie game. And in most of those, he came in earlier in the game. Or in extra innings. He was only credited with facing 30 plate appearances in high leverage situations last year. Not every bullpen outing is protecting a one run lead in the 8th inning...
  17. Well, there's a pretty good chance Cora isn't using the 6th or 7th guy in the bullpen in high leverage situations too often in the early going...
  18. The CBD's don't count?
  19. And is scheduled to pitch in high A ball this year...
  20. Or.... crazy thought here ... Dombrowski is doing what he almost always does with the bullpen and it might actually work out. It has before. It’s also failed him, too. Mixed results. But part of any set of mixed results is a good mix...
  21. The Jeff Bailey Award. And he is the early front runner...
  22. It’s really tough to top swapping Pavano and Armas Jr....
  23. Maybe they’re rude. But maybe they just know you
  24. I did say it was premature. Twice...
  25. While being lived universally is clearly not high on his list, simply believing Machado to be a cancer just doesn’t make it so. Especially in the wake of all his former teammates offering contrary stories. Sure he plays a questionable brand of baseball. So did Pete Rose, although in a different way. (Rose actually was Charlie (Johnny) Hustle.) While I’m sure many will find that comparison inaccurate, I bet Ray Fosse might offer some support...
