  1. I am starting to get the feeling that Harper will still be negotiating his contract and meeting with new teams on Opening Day, 2020...
  2. The early pre-season explosion of Michael Chavis is making me prematurely question the signing of Pearce, particularly given the complete dearth of bullpen spending. But as I said, this is very premature. While Pearce may not have the loftiest ceiling, there is at least a comfortable floor. Chavis, on the other hand, is a complete unknown and the only thing in his history that really works for him seems to be his perceived ability to handle the limited weak side platoon roles as evidenced by how well he handled last season at the plate after a lengthy suspension...
  3. Pearce turns 36 this year and has never been a starter at MLB. Clearly post prime and best suited for a part time role. But 29yo Eovaldi isn’t in his prime? Granted the ceiling is unknown largely due to sporadic health issues, but the Dox are very likely to get the best years Eovaldi has left. It’s just a question about how good they will be...
  4. DD did a great job building the major league club, but crediting him for rebuilding the farm because he found The Second Coming of Russ Branyan in the fourth round might be premature...
  5. I believe I only offered him for Jose LeClerc. He’s making it look prudent...
  6. Four provinces and only ONE player?! Just what the heck do you people do all summer!!???
  7. So are you saying you didn’t play Little League ball with Doug Froebel?
  8. He’s thumbing is nose at all those top 100 lists...
  9. Except that the players we’re viewing as “marginal” is done so in a very limited context. Back to Trayce Thompson, who had a horrible 2018. He’s still a better player than most minor leaguers, and in many cases it isn’t close. And those guys are professionals too. Dan Butler, for example, should be the guy we look at as the true “marginal” player as opposed to, say, the Orioles’ roster. And most of us played baseball at some point. And we probably all had that teammate who just flat out dominated and we thought should make the majors one day. But how many of those teammates did? And if he did, was he any good? I had one teammate who made the majors. It felt like an obvious conclusion at the time. He was just soooooo much better than the rest of us, including the competition. And he did make it, and played for 14 seasons. As a bench player and pinch hitter, never once in 14 years of MLB did he have 300 plate appearances in a single season...
  10. And that quibbling is why all those other accountants are so much better than you
  11. Or the Yankees could have slid Andujar across the diamond to first base. He wasn’t exactly giving Yankee fans Graig Nettles flashbacks over there, and very few people confuse Bird and Voit with Lou Gehrig...
  12. Not really. He can buy a ticket just like the rest of us...
  13. Even if I accept that argument, it doesn’t refute my point. “Competency” doesn’t get you to be among the best 750 or so in the world if, in your own words you’re “tied with a zillion other guys.” MLB players do have a skill at baseball relative to their competition that none of us can really understand and certainly most if not all of us cannot even relate to...
  14. Minor league deals. Now maybe a reliever to the budget, but I can see why DD isn't doing it. Sure there is a very good chance Bud Norris or Ryan Madson or ?? would make the team, but the fear is probably that they might only be marignally better, or possbily even worse than one from the Brewer/Tapia/Putnam/Mejia crowd, but would take their roster spot anyway. There is probably a reason no one is targeting Bud Norris for their MLB roster even at this point in the game...
  15. I have faith in you. It's Bryce Brentz that I have no faith in...
  16. It's still FOURTH when compared to the rest of the League. The Yankees lead the AL that year with a 3.18. The 1978 Red Sox were certainly a very complete team. Four Hall of Famers, three of whom were still in their prime. Excellent defense up the middle and of course in RF as well. Great starting pitching. They just had the misfortune that the Yankees had an equally good team at the same time...
  17. Half arrogant. I'll credit you with the "arro" part, but you have to earn the "gant" on your own...
  18. Fourth in the AL with a 3.54 team ERA. What's wrong there? Arguably a better bullpen in 1978, but then the pen was not used the same as it is today...
  19. Dee Gordon and Billy Hamilton aren’t true base stealers? And Hamilton is not a”base stealing specialist” before you counter with that. He’s also a defensive wizard considered to be among the best in the game. Really his only weakness is hitting. It’s just that it’s an astoundingly prominent weakness...
  20. But a “marginal major leaguer” is still among the best in the world. Think about the best teammate you ever had. How far did he get?
  21. The AAA depth is what I’m talking about. It’s not like the lineup in Pawtucket is loaded with prospects who need playing time. Chavis and maybe Travis and Ockimey, and that’s about it. The Sox could and probably should fill another position or two down there with some of the unemployed MLB veterans still looking for work, like DD did with the pitching staff...
  22. First of all, “tied with a zillion others” won’t get you out of A-ball in baseball. But more important, don’t confuse a lack of assessments and measurements with equality. Baseball makes it easier, with stat upon stat upon stat. There are factors that differentiate us all at what we do. They’re just not on Fangraphs...
  23. Sure it covers a lot of territory, but it’s still true in nearly every case. To make the majors, you have to be one of the best 750 baseball players in the world or very close to it. I don’t think I’m among the best 750 in the world at anything. Are you? Even the worst players in MLB are amazingly talented at baseball. Trayce Thompson was among, if not the worst player in MLB last season. But he is still an amazing baseball player to the point where he belongs among the top 750 in the world. And yes, that fact alone very likely does make him better at baseball than you or I are at anything...
