  1. Well they do sell tickets and televise games, granted the money is less. As for “meaning nothing,” it doesn’t with regards to the upcoming season. If you come in last in the Grapefruit League, it doesn’t mean you’re coming in last in the regular season...
  2. So much for “zero chance.” Fields cleared waivers and was released. Not sure why no waiver claim from Dombrowski here, unless there is something physically wrong with Fields. Which would explain his otherwise confusing DFA to begin with...
  3. I’ve seen too many seasons where the Frapefruit League “champion” and the Cactus League “champion” go on to win less than 140 games combined. My theory is because these teams are inherently weaker to begin with, so more minor leaguers try their hardest to make an impression. And maybe they get that opportunity because of how weak the team is ...
  4. Absolutely they could “wait” themselves out of the postseason if the bullpen sucks and they don’t react. But fixing it now operates on the assumption the bullpen will be the biggest need. Spending their limited allowance on a reliever might be unwise if there are injuries. Since most teams are not swapping relievers in April and May, DD did acquire a decent amount of depth to give shots to before some other teams’ fire sale...
  5. No relationship. Done....
  6. And it’s ok to overreact one time or for a casual fan. But baseball junkies like those of us who post on BDC all off-season need to know better. Of course, deep down, I think the occasion criticism about spring training W-L records is commenting for the sake of commenting...
  7. It is a possibility. I’m still hoping the Sox can trade for Josh Fields...
  8. If you were a 20-something AAAA player destined to ride buses into your mid-30’s and knew you were close, but your history said “not close enough.” And your choices were dying in minor league obscurity or maybe taking this little shot or that little pill and suddenly seeing every childhood dream, every moment you and your friends pretended in the backyard - suddenly become your real life, what would you do? My choice wouldn’t be ethical and wouldn’t be popular with the fans. But no way I want my one-step-away career ending with me on a hotel bed in Rochester wondering “what if”...
  9. Why not? Who cares how we do in the High Numbers Games?
  10. Maybe, but holding back at closer has been a Dombrowski MO for most of his career...
  11. He has an agent. Players don’t hire agents to take discounts. He’s a second year arb player making $20mill. He didn’t get that salary because money was not important to him...
  12. The Reds non-tendered stolen base wizard Billy Hamilton. Not “demoted in the lineup.” Not “traded”. They released him because he flat out sucked at getting on first. He was the inspiration for the axiom “you can’t steal first.” OBP is important because essentially it’s “the percentage of time a hitter doesn’t make a out.” Batting the best hitter behind the OBP leader should lead to more at bats with at least one runner on base, so second is optimal. Dropping him down to third might put more runners on base, but dropping a hitter down one place in the lineup costs him 18 plate appearances per year. So it’s best to minimize that...
  13. Stolen bases are overrated. At bats with people on base are not...
  14. There’s a lot of high profile secrecy involved here. If news of the identity of the Sox closer was leaked, it could compromise the entire season. Sssshhh....
  15. Not necessarily. Especially if they held off announcing it due to Brasier’s lingering yet minor health issue...
  16. I get being excited about the rookies, but they’re probably not the top options in most cases. But since the Sox will go through 20-25 or so pitchers this year, Hernandez will get the call. Just maybe not the first call. I don’t think Dalbec is as high as many think. And frankly, I hope they move him for a young player that better fits their needs. Chatham isn’t close and I bet doesn’t make his debut this year...
  17. Very unlikely. He’ll get a shot at some point this year, but this roster had so few questions to begin with. And spring training really isn’t a tryout. That’s what the minor league season is for...
  18. Maybe they already have.
  19. Brasier had a 1.90 ERA after August 1 and a 2.31 ERA after September 1...
  20. Down the road, maybe. The “high uniform numbers” is a subtle hint at the competition he was facing...
  21. Agreed. The steroid/HGH/banned substance stuff gets overblown. But the DV is a much more serious issue, yet the Sox still kept him. It is possible the Sox do release Wright, but just for PEDs? After keeping him through a DV case? If anything, his relessrwill be a combination of PEDs, the DV, and his inability to ever stay on the field...
  22. It does happen. Joey Devine being one example...
  23. Not a new message, either. Steve Howe was banned from MLB in 1992 after his seventh (yes, seventh) suspension for illegal drugs. He was re-instated shortly after and pitched occasionally in MLB until 1996. Fergie Jenkins was banned by MLB after being busted with cocaine in 1980. Also re-instated shortly after and pitched for 3 more years before being inducted into Cooperstown...
  24. Chad Cordero, Chris Sale...
  25. If the Sox release him now, the entire contract is voided, which would give the Sox an additional $1.375mill cap room before taxes really pile up. If they wait until after his suspension, that number drops to $687,000, despite Wright not receiving any of it. But they also do Wright a favor by getting the suspension out of the way ASAP and hedge their own bets against mid-season bullpen acquisitions. I think they hold him for at least half of a season...
