  1. But only half a season wirth of data vs a whole season from last year...
  2. If I knew about the budget concerns, I would have been VERY opposed to signing Pearce. And I didn’t like the Eovaldi signing for that money due to his spotty health history. I’d have preferred either Kimbrel or Keuchel (even though either probably cost a bit more at the time)...
  3. So you’re trading Sharwyn in order to knock $400K of the luxury tax?
  4. You hit the nail on the head with the problem with that bullpen - not good pitchers. Same problem with the Sox pen this year. Barnes is good, but I have my doubts about the rest. Having a designated closer isn’t the only way to go, especially if your bullpen blows lots of leads in the 7th and 8th innings (like the ‘03 pen did). This year, Tampa has one of the best bullpens in MLB, yet they have a 3-headed COMMITTEE handling save duties in the ninth. Conversely, the worst bullpen in MLB is the Mets, who added 3 successful closers (Diaz, Familia, Wilson) this past offseason alone...
  5. Plan or not, no one got save opportunities except Chad Fox until he got hurt and Brandon Lyon took over pitching the ninth almost exclusively. Kim tookover closing inJuly after a few games as a starter and finished out the year...
  6. It’s not about spending big. It’s bout spending at all. If he had traded for a modestly priced reliever, or grabbed a good waiver claim or one of the many free agents with significant MLB experience who signed elsewhere, I’d be ok with it. But this off-season, the relievers he added with the most MLB experience were Jenrry Mejia, Colten Brewer, and Erasmo Ramirez. Brewer has been off and on and the other two have a combined 3 IP this year in Boston..
  7. I think DD needs to hire me to be some sort of “adviser” where my job includes things like watching him try to spend money on Pearce while letting 1/3 of his bullpen walk away for nothing, I get to hit him with a rolled up newspaper while yelling “No! No! NO! Bad Dave!! Bad Dave!!” And when he gets some bullpen help, I would give him a treat and say “Who’s a good GM? Who’s a good GM? You are. That’s who. Now let’s go for your walkies.”
  8. While he didn’t include anyone, wasn’t he going to get anyone back in that trade?
  9. You’re not exactly selling me on the idea of dealing Benintendi for a pitcher...
  10. If you count the most recent game, his OPS over the last 10 is .579. But over the last 20 games, it’s .907. This is just the ebb and flow of the season. Mini-slump is the harshest term I’d use to describe it...
  11. He’s a good acquisition if Cincy sells and the Sox move. I mentioned him as a candidate in post #61 of this thread...
  12. While it might be unfair to criticize DD for failing to improve the bullpen, it’s not unfair to criticize him for not even trying. When teams like Seattle and Detroit, both of whom aren’t trying to win anything this year, are out there making waiver claims for MLB relievers they think have a chance to contribute, DD has no excuse for doing absolutely nothing, especially for moves like this that have absolutely no risk...
  13. Exactly. Me? I consider that safer if you have the budget. Of course, it can (and probably will at some point) burn you...
  14. Built on the solid foundation of 76 games against Cleveland, Detroit, Chicago, and K.C...
  15. And the Tigers signed Rosenthal. Way to go, DD! Let’s not gamble on that bullpen with the waiver wire opportunities!! Those should be reserved for players like Chris Owings!!! Status Quo!! Status Quo!!! (This is sarcasm.)
  16. Think so? I’ve always felt he makes safe moves. He rarely if ever moves MLB players for others, preferring to deal higher rated prospects for established players and typically signing expensive but productive players. Financially, it’s risky. But from a baseball perspective, he seems to play it safe a lot...
  17. While DD apparently did try to move Bradley, Porcello, and/or Bogaerts this off-season to clear budget, I’m still not convinced he wanted to spend it on bullpen. Like I said, it’s just not something he does often...
  18. I’d believe that except for the fact that Dombrowski has a long history of ignoring bullpens in the off-season, preferring internal solutions and inexperienced closers. He has had his success stories, but his failures as well. This year, so far we are in the latter category...
  19. The biggest difference was Epstein didn’t stand pat for half a season and hope things got better. After only 54 games, he dealt the vastly overrated Shea Hillenbrand for Byung-Hyun Kim...
  20. Part of me thinks there was some massive failures to communicate this off-season. Dombrowski went about this off-season like his plan was to build a stellar rotation that mitigated the need for an expensive and powerful bullpen. Cora has been managing like his goal is to minimize the starters to keep them rested for the postseason. Who exactly is supposed to be pitching here? It’s not even the All Star break and the Red Sox have already used 24 different pitchers this year and had 15 different pitchers start games. Last year, for the entire season, the Red Sox used 23 different pitchers and had 13 different pitchers start games...
  21. The comparisons to 2003 in terms of a dedicated closer vs a committee are not really accurate, either. The Sox had a dedicated closer in 2003 - or a very small committee - in Chad Fox. The problem wasn’t the lack of a dedicated closer; it was a bullpen loaded with mediocre to bad pitchers. This year, that is where the comparison begins and ends. The Sox simply don’t have very many good pitchers out there regardless of their roles...
  22. Tigers are talking to Trevor Rosenthal, likely on a minors deal. Way to be aggressively maintain the status quo,DD!!
  23. I dunno. That May looks pretty slumpy....
  24. Buttrey has been great but Ramirez has been fifth man doing mop up work...
  25. Greene is having a career year, but he is a “sell high” candidate whose nest asset is that he’s affordable for another year. With other closers on the market like Smith, Giles, and possibly Iglesias, Yates, and Vazquez, he’s not going to be the top subject on phone calls next month...
