A lot of people use these forums as a method of venting frustration with the current team. Sometimes, even when they post something that is really technically incorrect, pointing this out doesn't change their level of frustration. This year's team has given us plenty of reasons to be frustrated. Expect a lot more cathartic posts the rest of the way...

Ridiculous spending practices. Ok they’re not exactly alone there. But they have habitually outspent the bulk of MLB. The Dodgers and Red Sox are equally generous...

Certain teams will contiue to spend, while others will find it more dfficult. The biggest change might be an increase in the number of "small market" teams, as right now teams with lesser TV deals will now fall into that category. Or teams who think next season will also be fan-free as well might adopt a small market mentality, even if only temporary..

Cole's deal was 1) prior to the pandemic. and 2) from the Yankees, who play by different financial rules than the rest of MLB...

They're going for it. Walker is a free agent at season's end. Mainers get a PTBNL, and per Rosenthal, is someone not in the Jay's player pool. So that answers that question from another thread...

Andujar does have 5 years of control left. I agree on needing pitching, but I also see pitching prospects as being riskier. If they don't work out, you're going to keep rebuilding...

The Yankees, who have had Eovaldi once already and are therefore familiar with him, are not likely to give up an MLB-ready prospect like Clarke Schmidt to acquire an expensive SP with questionable durability. Eovaldi only netted Tampa Jalen Beeks when he did not have $34mill left on his deal. Doubtful he gets a better pitching prospect plus a young controllable MLB slugger now with that money attached. They'll hand the ball over to Schmidt first. If he doesn't work out, they can just demote him back to the training site. If they trade him and Eovaldi struggles or gets hurt, they cannot undo the trade and get Schmidt back...

It's not so much of an "unnamed staffer" as it is a 23 year old story with some details lost in the mental abyss. But it's not like Armas was some sort of no-talent throw-in. The man was 10 lbs of talent jammed into a 5 lb sling. Carl Pavano plus any random arm does not get you Pedro Martinez...

I was just looking at their rankings (on Fangraphs, my preferred ranking site) and seeing who was the highest ranked pitcher that fit my valuation. No idea if he slots above or below Mata and Ward. Worst case - he is ranked lower than Ward. Do you still do the deal? (Despite the Sox dire need for pitching, I would lean towards Andujar in that deal. He is a proven MLB commodity and he frees up some set of JD, Chavis, and Dalbec to get pitching.)

Not so sure. I do remember a story at the time about Steinbrenner being upset that the Red Sox were able to acquire Martinez, and being told by a staffer that "You had a shot if you still had Armas." Bottom line is the Expos valued Martinez as being worth two specific pitchers. We had one. The Yankees had the other. Maybe they would have accepted a Pavano-Brian Rose package. But maybe they really liked Armas, too. Either way, we cannot rewrite history. Having Armas definitely enabled us to acquire Pedro...

In looking at baseballtradevalues.com, the top prospect a deal of Moreland to the Yankees might get you is maybe Albert Abreu, who Fangraphs has as their #13. If that is the case, do you deal Moreland for Abreu? I thik their valuation of Moreland might be rated low at $0.9mill surplus. He already has 1.1 fWAR this year. That's actually more than he was worth in the 4 previous full seasons, so it is clearly a career year for him. But if he projects as a even a 1+ fWAR player next year as well, then his surplus value should be closer to $5-6mill range. This would mean a fair trade would be something like Miguel Andujar (if the Sox wanted him), or one of their better pitching prospects like Miguel Yajure, Alexander Vizcaino, or maybe Luiis Gil. (Again, using baseballtradevalues.com valuations.) So would you deal Moreland for any of them? Acquiring Andujar would make either JD expendable, or make Chavis and/or Dalbec expendable...
