Had we kept Adam Everet,, he would top that list easily. Also the lack of Iglesias there makes me wonder, did he play that few innings in Boston? He did see a LOT of time at 3B, and was easily the best defender there I have seen in a long time. Heck I still think of him as the best defensive 3B in Sox history...

Actually he did well on the metrics, but he defintely had problems out there. I saw him play A LOT of outfield in Chicago. In 7 years, he never learned how to play the wall at Wrigley. He had a stretch of the Yips back in 2008-2009 where he kept dropping routine pop flies. For some odd reason, he added this little hop-step as he settled under them, and timed it so poorly that he it lead to him flummoxing the whole play. It got so bad, I was at a game where he caught a routine fly ball, and the crowd gave him a mock standing ovation (which he took in stride and tipped his cap). However, as he was a former shortstop in Japan, he did have a great arm. And because he had some issues fielding the ball, runners routinely challenged him, so he did rack up a decent amount of outfield assists. Of course, for every runner he gunned down, a whole bunch more made it safely...

There is a lot to it, but sometimes the sample sizes of the backups with the other pitchers creates a misleading situation. The only reason I trade Vazquez is I think he can be replaced easily on this market and other teams do have interest in him, hopefully enough to get back something needed...

I'd probably be more inclinded to make the deal if someone besides Tauchman was included. I am extremely sour on him. Sanchez wouldn't be the worst addition and might be a bounceback candidate. One thing he does have going for him is that he is still only 27. Of course, would the Yankees trade him to Boston? That's another matter...

For some comparison, Vazquez has been credited with 35 Defensive runs Saved in 3546 innings behind the plate. Now DRS is not avaialble for the first 4 seasons Varitek played. But his next 4 (2002 through 2005), he was credited with (-16) Defensive Runs Saved in 4291 innings. Vazquez gets a huge edge using this metric...

Maybe Vazquez isn't great defensively, but he ranks near the top of MLB in DRS...

Bogaerts is an interesting case. I was very surprised he ever signed the extension in the first place. He was 26 with one year to go until free agency and his agent (Boras) has a notorious reputation for encouraging his clients to free agency. While Boras has had a few sign extensions prior to free agency, Bogaerts might be the only one to do so with only one year of arbitration left. You just know Boras did not want him to do that deal. So did Bogaerts sign it because he wants to stay in Boston regardless? Or was it just because the team was coming off a World Series win and he wanted to keep the team intact?

Since July 1 2019, Gary Sanchez has his .168/.275/.398 (.673 OPS) in 360 plate appearances. For some perspective, the player you are dealing away has, in that same timeframe posted a slash line .221/.272/.383 (OPS .655) in 268 PA. Now it is only 360 PA, and any player can struggle, even for longer periods. But at some point, it is possible you are just replacing Michael Chavis with a more expensive and more defensively inept version Michael Chavis...

Not much. OPS+ of 108. The problem there is that when you do that, 2017 is equally influential as 2020. And that is just flat out not true....

I look at it this way. Between 2012 and 2019, the Sox finished in last place three times. In two of the following seasons, they came in first. They actually went from worst to first more often than they repeated the last place finish. So if nothing else, we know it is possible. It's not like we looked at that 2012 team and thought "Hey, we're just a closer/starter/first baseman/whatever away". Especially after the Sox unloaded all those contracts in August...

How far from being a competitor did you think the Sox were after their last place finish in 2012? Or their last place finish in 2015?

So the old adage of “Strong up the middle” needs to include 3b about 1/4 of the time...

Tauchman strikes me as Exhibit A in the “Alleged Yankee Sign Stealing Scandal.” The guy couldn’t hit in Coors!! Sanchez has been a league-average hitter (99 OPS+) with some power for the past 3 seasons. He might be great at Fenway, but those ex-Yankee stink bombs just never work out.

Well how close are the Sox to competing? The offense was actually not bad, despite awful seasons from Benintendi and Martinez. The pitching was horrible. But if/when ERod and Sale return, it gets better. Pivetta and Houck might make a decent back end. So they need a starter and some serious bullpen help, and figure out CF and 2b. It’s not out of the realm of possibility that they are competitive next season. Especially when this off-season looks like one where most teams could be cost-cutting...

I’ve actually seen that with 2b and CF reversed, which doesn’t change up the middle. And isn’t a rule breaker on that maxim. I think I agree with 5GoldGloves that the shift has impacted/should impact how we look at 2b...
