  1. And hoping is all they have. He’s less likely to opt out than Price was..,
  2. Why? If MLB was all about “Come see Mike Trout!” And ran commercials with catchy slogans “Mike Trout is never out!” And pushed him up as the next Willie Mays. Then he tests positive for PEDs, what happens? Obviously there are massive differences, but Subway is an example of a company that got burned and had to do a lot of back pedaling after marketing using an individual...
  3. MLB might be hesitant to market their product by using any individual player just in case he does turn out to be a user at any point in his career...
  4. But was he just lumped in after steroids and PEDs made a joke of home run records?
  5. I always liked Jayson Stark’s take. “Fans only hate cheating if it leads to more home runs.”
  6. A while back, I was on LinkedIn, and Aubrey Huff’s name popped up as a potential connection. No idea why. So I sent it out, figuring “Oh, what the heck.” And forgot about it. Several months later, he accepted it. I went to his profile and he only had like 35 connections, and about half of them were former Major Leaguers including Dustan Mohr, Nate Shietholtz and Greg Blosser. I was impressed. “Aubrey Huff personally accepted my invite!!” I realized he was using LinkedIn to plug his new blog “Huff Off the Cuff.” I read a few entries. While he had some bouts of humility, overall it was largely boasting interspersed with radical right political views and blatant discriminations. I disconnected from him shortly after...
  7. Not even that they just cheated. It’s that they “cheated on a way I don’t approve of.” Other known cheaters like Gaylord Perry and Phil Niekro were enshrined because they had the numbers, which was the only criteria. Many of the PED-users actually didn’t even cheat, since there were no rules or insufficient rules at the time...
  8. He was an overall letdown. Kimbrel has his highest career fWAR in Boston, too. He sandwiched it in between his two career worst fWAR values (at the time). Was he a letdown? Gonzalez played less time in Boston, but his career was nearly equally imbalanced. He followed up his career high fWAR in Boston with a career low OPS+ the following season...
  9. With the unfair advantage of complete 100% hindsight, which was the better set of (non-)moves? Get Adrian Gonzalez and draft Jackie Bradley? Or re-sign Adrian Beltre and keep Anthony Rizzo?
  10. Lackey was DESPISED by fans the first two seasons. And for good reason - he was horrible. He was so bad, I actually breathed a sigh of relief when it was announced he would miss a year for Tommy John surgery. He came back and was very good. But he certainly proved a lot about timing. His contract was the same number of years (5) as JD Drew’s and both had 2 good seasons in Boston. But Lackey left loved and Drew left hated by many fans.
  11. I remember looking at Adrian Beltre’s actual numbers IN Boston. HRs: 28. Doubles: 49. Left Fielders Sidelined with Broken Ribs: 2. OPS: .919
  12. I cut him a bit of slack for being a surprisingly good right fielder once you factor in that his foot speed was matched by a glacier. But he was a letdown. And really not sure why the Sox went after him besides the “Big Name Star Power”. The Sox had an excellent 1b in Youkilis and an excellent 3b in Beltre. They should have paid Adrian B. and gone with the status quo...
  13. Ryan would call anyone a clubhouse poison as long as no one else did. He appeared to take pride in his contrarian viewpoints...
  14. See? Stop worrying, Slasher. Manny will do just fine at the orphanage...
  15. Exactly. Myers would have been the new Mike Lansing contract we suffered through as he played sporadically. But the arm or two the Sox also got had the potential to make it worthwhile. Let them pay Myers...
  16. So being cautionary for a potentially deadly and extremely contagious virus is considered “PC” now? If only we had been more “PC” for that wimpy flu outbreak in 1917. Boy, was THAT one overblown, huh?
  17. Acuna...
  18. Unless he opts out after this year
  19. I think a big factor is all these high school kids repeatedly throwing 90+ mph at ages 16 and 17. You don’t need to throw that hard to get high school hitters out. But high radar gun readings and lots of them lead directly to scholarships and signing bonuses...
  20. But the deferred money deals like Sale’s are not?
  21. Bullpens nowadays cover 600-700 IP. Sox relievers threw 665 innings last year...
  22. ... and with that much available, he can sign every available free agent..
  23. Castillo could restructure the deal, keeping the same money over more years but lowering his AAV. He could “retire” and come back later as a free agent. While I think he’d like to get back to the Show, I don’t think he has too many regrets...
  24. My exact words were “play baseball.” While I realize Castillo has positioned himself to be denied competing in the sport at the highest level, one of the big advantages there is the drastic increase in pay. He has that already. He can work and try to get back to the highest level. But for him, worst case scenario is he plays at the second highest level while being compensated as if he was at the highest. It’s not a bad life...
  25. At the end of the day, he will have received $72mill for playing baseball. Is that such a bad life?
