  1. ?? Not you what? I was saying that reportedly Dombrowski wanted to keep Cherington...
  2. I have zero faith in Ockimey and finding a better LHH first baseman is not going to be all that difficult...
  3. To be fair, Dombrowski wanted to as well...
  4. Also dgalehouse cannot handle it if anyone says anything bad about Dombrowski or good about Cherington
  5. Oh no chance he takes down Maris. Also that platoon idea sucks because it has an AAAA player in Ockimey getting the bulk of the at bats...
  6. Ian Anderson beat the Red Sox and Yankees in his first two career starts. I believe he’s the first pitcher to do that in a long time...
  7. I agree. Although COVIDs 1 through 18 were fair game...
  8. Dalbec would hold the AL single season home run record if he kept that pace...
  9. Well, just as I blame Cherington for Sandoval and Hanley, I blame Dombrowski for Fielder. And Fielder lingered on the market forever that off-season. Dombrowski did not even sign him until Victor Martinez was ruled out for the year, which was in February, I believe. So if Ilitch got involved, he got involved really late. It seemed a little odd to go all in on a replacement player with a deal twice as long as the guy he was replacing. (And forced the most awful position alignment seen in the AL in decades when Miguel Cabrera was moved back to 3B.)
  10. He did there almost exactly what he did here. He went on a spending spree with players like Victor Martinez and Prince Fielder and his massive extensions to Justin Verlander and then the phenomenal one to Miguel Cabrera, who is still owed $94 mill for the next 3 seasons, which is an awful lot for a beaten-down league average (OPS+ of 100 since 2017) hitter with no defensive abilities to speak of. They had a very good run, but when it comes to Dombrowski, that type of run ends with a smattering of blood, guts and aging mega-million dollar contracts. He just seems to make every deal with only "the now" in mind and then hopes tomorrow never comes...
  11. While it is true this team is not one Logan Allen away from competing, his presence would still create one less void on the staff going forward...
  12. Well, his legacy will carry division 3 titles and a WS trophy. But he is getting a reputation for crippling teams on his way out the door. The Tigers are still a mess
  13. Logan Allen is 23 years old. There is actually a really good chance that the first 35 innings - and that is all he has at the MLB level - of his career are actually not representative of the remainder of his career. Michael Kickham is 31 years old. There is a really good chance thatt he first 42 innings - and again, that is all he has - are actually going to get worse if he ever pitches in MLB again. So your analogy really isn't very good, unless you think s*** with whipped cream will taste better if you leave it out longer...
  14. Well, as he has been diagnosed with myocarditis, it is possible his arm is not a factor. He may simply never be able to play again...
  15. He did crush in 163 PA's in AA ball. If they think of him as a catcher, I doubt he is starting in April, 2021 in Boston. So maybe they just pursue a stopgap if they deal Vazquez. James McCann or Tyler Flowers?
  16. I'd be surprised. But if they do non-tender him, it is clearly going to be with inside medical knowledge to which we don't have access...
  17. Oh they would be better now. But we would not have had 2018. Or really, 2016 and 2017. Whether or not you like Logan Allen or Michael Kopech or Yoan Moncada isn't the question, because I think we can agree they are at least as good as Michael Kickham, Jeffrey Springs, and Jose Peraza. The biggest question was if there was a possibility of being better now and still having those years...
  18. The Dodgers tried Wong at a couple positions other than catcher. I'm not sure if this was because he was a lousy catcher or because they had great organizational depth at the position with Will Smith, Keibert Ruiz, and the one some scouts seem to think the most of, 18yo Diego Cartaya, who should absolutely be introducing himself to people by saying "Hello. My name is Diego Cartaya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." And if he isn't, he either needs to stay in A-ball until he does or be immediately DFA'd. Because that lack of proper behavior is just not to be tolerated. But with Wong, he was also tried at 2B and 3B. But again, the Dodgers have a few good prospects at these positions as well, not to mention current rookie Gavin Lux. So is Wong defensively inept anywhere? Or is he good everywhere? Does he really have a position he can handle, or is he really someone who can play multiple positions passably and has a decent hit tool, making him a New and Improved version of Michael Chavis, with Better Hitting and Catcher Eligibility?
  19. As he should. But does he think he is a future MLB piece and can Bloom afford to hold on to his better trade chips if he needs to move one of them to improve the club as soon as next season? And let's face it, 1B types who can hit are not exactly the hardest things to find...
  20. Plawecki is a good backup to have, but I'm not sold on him being a guy I want to see get 450-500 plate appearances. Apparently the Rays did have some interest in Vazquez as recently as 3 weeks ago...
  21. The Sox could try to get Keibert Ruiz from the Dodgers, who already have a young pr-arb catcher in MLB blocking him in Will Smith. That would probably cost the Sox Triston Casas, if the Dodgers had any interest. Casas has an .824 OPS as a 19yo playing in A-ball. Ruiz has posted a .772 OPS across all levels of MiLB through his age 21 season. Prior to the 2020 season, Casas was ranked #70 by Baseball America and Ruiz was ranked #81. So this is actually a very fair trade. (And yes, it works out as a one for one on BTV with Ruiz having a surplus vaue of $23.4 million and Casas having a surplus value of $22.2 million.) These "top prospect for top prospect" deals are rare, but this move would help the Dodgers by opening another spot on their 40 man roster, which could be important given their farm system, while dealing from a position of depth. The Soxwould get an elite propsect at one of the tougher positions to fill. As Casas is not a Bloom guy, not sure what his opinion of Triston's future is...
  22. I think the Sox pick up a short term catcher on the market. They could go all in for Realmuto, I suppose. But if not, James McCann and former Bloom acquisition Mike Zunino top the list of suspects, along with dark horse Tyler Flowers. I have no idea who this year's Charlie Morton aka Bloom Target is, if there is one. I never saw Martin Perez as a target for this past offseason. But it is possible that Bloom relies more on the SP he already has, which is a list that does include ERod and Sale, plus whoever he gets via trade (Lopez? Someone for Vazquez?), and then focuses on building up the Sox lackluster bullpen in to more of a team strength, or at least less of a liability. Liam Hendriks, Trevor Rosenthal, and the very underappreciated Trevor May seem like good candidates. Hector Rondon is struggling this year, but it also typically a very underrated reliever who has had a pretty good career..
  23. I was saying this just the other day to JD Martinez...
  24. Some predictions, which, let's face it, rarely come true when I make them. Andrew Benintendi and Christian Vazquez are in their final week of games for the Red Sox. Benintendi to the White Sox for Rodrigo Lopez is a trade that makes a ton of sense for both sides. Vazquez will go to the Rays for a package that includes Kevin Kiermaier as the "bad contract" Bloom uses to up the return for a farm system and pitching staff he is obviously very familiar with. As Tampa has already taken multiple steps to replace Kiermaier (by acquiring both Manny Margot and Randy Arozarena), they would also clearly find this to be a good start. While the free agent who clearly fills the biggest need for the Sox is Trevor Bauer, I have my doubts Bloom tries to sign him. Tampa is 222-157 (.585) since 2018, and the biggest external name Bloom has added to that staff is Charlie Morton (6.7 fWAR), who trails only their internally-developed Blake Snell (8.1 fWAR) for the team lead, but in one less season. I don't think adding an ace i going to be his style. But I do think he will spend...
  25. Noted. I will limit my Macho Duck links accordingly...
