    The off-season has been glacially slow all around the AL East. The Yankees did not do anything until this week, and one of there big moves was just bringing a player back. The Rays have taken steps backwards replacing Snell with Michael Wacha. The Orioles have done nothing except deal away their SS. And the Blue Jays - the team that was supposed to be poised to make major moves and become competitors - have done less than the Red Sox. Right now the biggest addition to any team in the AL East might be ERod. And Sale has a chance to be the second biggest, especially if Kluber is not healthy....

    I do not think anyone thought Chavis was the next home grown power hitter...

    I think there are plenty of players who think they can turn any team into a winner, even if they have a long history that says otherwise. They nearly never say they sign for the money, but money is almost always the prime factor. Even Corey Kluber this year only took the one year for the Yankees because he very likely believes he can turn this into a bigger, better deal next season. A 2 year deal hinders him because he would be 36 next time he hit the market. And a team option becomes worst cae scenario for him, because he either does not get the chance to hit the market again if he is good, or he has a rough year and has to prove himself again...

    “Rebuilding” is owner-speak for “going cheap.” It’s not something large market teams where real money is at risk actually do...

    Is this the NBA or NFL? Tanking doesn’t help much in MLB because draft picks are more volatile and less immediate...

    If Bloom was going to be all about selling off players in July, he would need to add a few more short term sellable pieces. Right now the Sox have too many heavily paid immovables to have a fire sale. Also Bogaerts would likely already be gone. His opt out reduces his trade value. He might even have been a Met by now...

    Ellsbury was a Boras client who followed his agent’s advice about reaching free agency. If the Sox wanted another leadoff hitting replacement, Crawford was one of the best in the game at the time and was coming off an MVP caliber season. Should the Sox have waited a couple years for a lesser player?

    We have no real idea if this is the ego-feeding venture you keep postulating. Is Bloom about just plain winning? Or being recognized as the builder of winners? It’s hard to do the latter unless you work for a small market team. No one is dazzled by anyone building a winner by spending $250 mill. How do you think Joe Maddon got his (completely undeserved) reputation as a good manager?

    Also a Cy Young winner on Dombrowski’s flagship 2016 team. But DD inherited Porcello in Boston and it’s not very likely DD had any influence on his pitching ability...

    I was wondering if Henry called a moratorium on the Sox Big Spending Days. But if he wanted a lower salary for his team and a payroll reduction, one might suspect Bogaerts would be in more trade rumors and Benintendi in fewer. Still it is a possibility...

    That’s the funny thing. Most of us did not think Lackey coming back would be good. And really, until the post season, he wasn’t. Buchholz was amazing - probably his best year. But he was part of last place in2012. You’re right in the biggest addition to that 2013 team was Uehara. But he was not a starter, which is what your point was...

    Bloom is doing good things to help the future, but that doesn’t mean you ignore the present. The Sox still have to put a watchable product on the field. After all, that is what this entire business is about - being a watchable product...

    As disappointing as signing Martin Perez is, as it stands now only 5 free agents have signed deals longer than 2 years and only 10 more have even signed 2 year deals. There are lots of good players left...

    Well, it is a list of the largest signing bonuses given to IFA. As neither Daisuke nor Okajima - both of whom went through a posting process for exclusive rights as well as hefty sums for their former teams - did not receive an actual signing bonus, they are not on the list. If the list included draft picks, Rick Asadoorian might be on it. Remember him? Sox gave him a ton of money (like $6mill, I think) out of high school and he wound up being a career minor leaguer for 12 years...

    Not sure why Bloom likes Martin Perez. He's not horrible, but not exactly what we need, either.
