I used to like Range Factor as a defensive metric. But then I realized there were too many outside factors that influenced it, such as pitching staff and ballpark. It really only works for comparing two players who play the same position on the same team...

That's the thing about errors. They do not tell much of a story at all. For example, say you are managing a fictional baseball team called the Harrisburg Hypotheticals. You have two starting shortstop candidates and need to start the better defender of the two. So you have your coach hit each of them 100 identical ground balls. Shortstop A only gets to 80 of them, but makes all 80 plays. Shortstop B gets to all 100, but makes 10 errors. Who is your starter?

Just yesterday you asked Henry if he was too busy "bean counting" to watch Mookie in the World Series. Although I can honestly see that being chalked up to frustration...

And after that point, Mookie did seem hellbent on testing the market. It is entirely possible he saw the extension from LA as being about as good as thigns were going to get once the pandemic hit and the economic future seemed a lot less certain. His comments about being dedicated to winning in the atmosphere of the Dodgers seemed a bit premature, as he had not played a single regular season game for them at the time the deal was announced...

Well, Boston cannot compete with Miami or San Diego or LA in a lot of ways as a city. Except that the Sox do certainly pay a lot more for athletes....

So you’re saying that because Price took a bit load of cash, it dismisses Torii Hunter’s claim? I’ve been hearing these types of things about Boston since former Celtics’ guard Dee Brown got harassed by the police for house shopping in Wellesley...

Undesirable to play for is worse. We’ve heard Torii Hunter and Adam Jones say exactly that about Boston, verifying what we all learned from Carl Crawford. And maybe now Mookie? No one thinks the Sox are too cheap except Sox fans who apparently get upset that a team can be assembled and Henry still has money left over. I would think an undesirable team would be a bigger deal to the players, but cheap reputations are probably more common among fans. Like I said, Henry is one of the biggest spending team owners in all of professional sports and has been for well over a decade. But somehow at this stage he is STILL being accused of being cheap...

You do realize the Red Sox had one of the highest payrolls in MLB this year, right? Some sources have them third. Some fourth. All of them say among the highest. So do they have a commitment to winning or not?

Or, to keep it in baseball context, like watching a runner get caught stealing third base right before the next hitter singles. If he hadn't tried to steal, he would have scored, right? Maybe not, because it's a different situation so the hitter might get pitched to differently. The Butterfly Effect hits baseball...

Looking at that table, shortstop metrics might be getting messed up by the shifts. There are a lot of guys who have nearly as many "out of zone" plays as "in zone" plays.

But several certainly. UZR also involves more than just range. Having great range is good, but you still have to get the guy out...

Adames might have great range, but a player can have a negative UZR if 15 shortstops have better range...
