  1. Upon further review, this post has been overturned…
  2. Just starting pitchers? Imagine if he had unloaded Story this off-season…
  3. Not relevant. My point is if we tie with Cleveland for the last spot, the Sox are in and Cleveland is not.If we tie with Setroit for the last playoff spot, we’re out. And Cleveland isnt trying to catch the Sox; they are aiming for Detroit. (They’ll settle for passing Boston.)
  4. The Sox do have to hope Cleveland doesn’t overtake Detroit and leave us needing to beat the Tigers for a WC slot, as they currently have a 0-3 record against Detroit…
  5. Missing the postseason altogether would be far, far worse. There is no reason to believe road games in Houston or Seattle are automatic losses, and even less reason to believe being eliminated by a two game losing for a lineup still potentially starting half the bench would create any situation beyond a positive one, regardless of the brief trip. Don’t forget the Sox split the season series with Seattle and won it vs Houston. (So go Seattle -take the West!) You can’t argue this team is not playoff worthy while at the same time, exalting other teams with basically the same records overall, but a losing one against Boston. Also important - Boston owns the tiebreaker with Cleveland…
  6. It believe it was 2011 that had the lead entering September and then just fell apart that last month, reportedly due to being forced to play a makeup game on a scheduled off day. The 2012 team faltered to the end because in late August, they traded away AGon, Crawford, Beckett and Punto for a pocketful of change and a basketful of dreams…
  7. Anthony was called up 6 days before Devers was traded. At the time the Sox still had Duran-Rafaela-Abreu in the OF. Whether or not he is worth one more win than any of those three over the first 2 months of the season is debatable. Now if Devers had been a team player and said (in Spanish) “I will take over first base since Casas is now injured”, that would have at least opened up a DH slot for him and been a much better lineup capable of a few more wins. But Devers was still a petulant child at that time..:
  8. Romy and Refsnyder are fine as weak side platoon hitters. But lately both have seen that role expand out of necessity…
  9. Which team didnt get a real bat that they had to pay d for all season? The Red Sox committed $40mil to Bregman. The Cubs traded for Kyle Tucker. The Blue Jays had a fairly inactive offseason, although they did give a massive extension to their star slugger, and that current roster was vmcertainly built through anyone’s definition of trying. The Red Sox did everything fans usually associate with trying to win. They brought in expensive talent (Bregman). They traded prospects for key players (Crochet, Narvaez). They signed other key role players (Chapman, Wilson). They traded away Devers because he openly stated he was not going to be a team player. And they did unload Priester for reasons I didn’t understand, and it’s made worse by his sudden emergence to relevance…
  10. Romy is among the bench starters. The Sox weren’t and shouldn’t have been counting on him to carry them either…
  11. You don’t think the Cubs are trying? Or the Blue Jays? Really, I don’t get the argument that the Red Sox are not. I think Theyre clearly trying to win, just not in a way many fans like…
  12. I loved the Houck/Whitlock bullpen, even if Houck was the closer. But to his credit, Houck was an impressive SP last year. I think the Sox can bolster next year’s BP with Guerrero, Slaten and Fitts in front of Whitlock/Chapman. And Sandlin and Luis Perales as bullpen depth in Worcester…
  13. So what are the three - and you’re limited to three - teams that are “trying to be good”? At least one of the Mets, Phillies, Dodgers and Yankees is already off your list. Maybe more if you think the Cubs, Giants, Rangers, etc. are not trying…
  14. Minimum of two playing every night, yes. Its hard to win when you’re bench to start the season is now I’m getting close to 30% of your PA…
  15. It wasn’t just two rookies and a few pitchers you expected to get hurt. Fangraphs had the Sox losing 14 fWAR due to injury, fourth most in MLB. But that’s insignificant? Sure they could have made the roster stronger, but thats doesn’t mean the injuries did not make an impact because “every team has them.”
  16. Maybe because they’re not left with Hamilton, Eaton, Refsnyder, etc. every night.
  17. Maybe the Sox need to start listening to me when o say “put Fitts in the bullpen!” Just like I did with Whitlock as the Sox were repeatedly trying to square peg him into the rotation. I think I’m going to update my resume for that GM position. Anyone want to “vouch” for the work I did getting the Padres bullpen back in shape? Or should I use a lower profile team like the Nats or Royals?
  18. Oh and to answer your question, it’s going to be Yoshida who smacks the necessary home runs, just to further complicate releasing him this off-season..
  19. I would only consider the 2011 team to be chokers. Although a more realistic label might be “quitters”…
  20. I agree. One problem I have is people refuse to differentiate between a team choking and another team gettting insanely hot. The 1978 team won 99 games!! Since 1947, only the 2018 team has won more games. And it was the Red Sox who won “down the stretch” to force game 163 while the Yankees lost. But the Yankees played .750 baseball for over 3 months that year, which is an insanely hot pace for an insanely long time. The bulk of that comeback took place in late July/early August…
  21. Whats your point? That injuries were not a factor because players have been injured before and a theory that the Sox will ruin pitchers again? And some of this might be ancient history. Bregman has played in 461 out of 486 games over the last 3 years. How was his injury expected? Are you saying he was clearly due?
  22. Of course his premise was the Sox have a long history of choking “down the stretch.” The 1986 team made it all the way to Game 7 of the World Series, and while Game 6 of that series fell apart, let’s not forget that team had an equally impressive comeback from the brink in the ALCS. Oh and that was also 39 years ago. I would bet not a single person affiliated with the team then is still in the organization, including hot dog vendors. Might as well lead with “This team choked when Pesky held the ball in ‘46 and THEY’RE DOING IT AGAIN!! Same story every 79 years!!!”
