  1. Or do something semi-radical like trade Yoshida (2 years $37.2mill) for Nick Castellanos (1 yr $20mill) No idea how Philly feels about Yoshida. They are reportedly unhappy with Castellanos…
  2. Duran trails Anthony, Bregman, and Abreu in OPS+. I’m not so sure he’s the best hitter. Fourth out of nine starters? Hos OPS+ is 115. Hes not average. But hes worse offensively and defensively than Abreu this year. His higher bWAR is likely from playing more games. Now he certainly is among the most durable on this team. That shouldn’t be ignored. As they say, the best ability is availability…
  3. Hopefully they can hit Springs as hard as they did last time they faced him. 5 IP 9.00 ERA 1.087 OPSA
  4. Thought the Sale trade made sense but the Priester one didn’t. Go figure…
  5. Romy gets to be the free roamer that can play just about anywhere as long as the opposing pitcher is left-handed. I mentioned on another thread, Refsnyder was 8th in MLB vs LHP over the past 3 seasons. Romy is one of the 7 hitters in front of him…
  6. I think these analyses are all over the place. The initial post appeared to try to discredit run differential as a method of evaluating an offense, but the resulting analysis was not good and very misleading. Bringing other stats and methods is good, but it cannot be done on rank and rank alone. The Sox fare better on some metrics and worse on others, but that doesn’t make them unique in this regard, If the Sox are the tenth best offense, for example, whats the criteria and what 9 are better?
  7. Wait. So are you saying I shouldn’t get my resume ready? I will definitely NOT be using you as a reference…
  8. I’m not as big of a fan as you for putting Duran in CF. I think both he and Rafaela are game changers out there, but Rafaela is more likely to change the game in a positive way. A 1-2-3 punch of Duran-Anthony-Marte is very enticing. But I still prefer moving Duran from those two. To me, it’s either Duran or Abreu…
  9. Well, you DFA to remove a player from the 40 man roster. You can DFA a player under contract; you cannot non-tender a player under contract…
  10. So do Rafaela and Abreu not have fire, passion, energy, etc.? Do opposing teams really fear Duran?
  11. Non-tendered players immediately reach free agency and is limited to arbitration-eligible players. A DFAd player is removed from the 40 man roster and placed on waivers, where he can be claimed by another team. He can only reach free agency if he has 5 or more years of service time or has been DFAd before and goes unclaimed on waivers. If he does become a free agent, his new team only pays him minimum wage and the team that DFAd him pays any remaining contract…
  12. Grissom will get DFAd this off-season. His chances of being on the Sox roster next March are only slightly greater than mine…
  13. Mayer might get injured a lot, but he’s likely to be counted upon if the Sox like him. He won’t be depth. Story got injured a lot, too, and the Sox never went out and replaced him proactively. Or even actively, like that one year hr got injured in December and we suffered through Kike at SS
  14. No idea what to make of this. i don’t expect any answer because the legwork is insane, but is this really unusual? Yes, the Sox scoring will look worse and they will look worse in that regard if you discount their top 19 wins by run differential. I have to imagine that applies to every team ever. And that they are outscored in the remaining games? Easily believable, but is it problematic? Wasn’t it a bit unfair to discount the blowout wins from run differential but not the blowout losses? Not to mention on the “non blow out games”, scoring 510 while allowing 583 runs has a Pythagorean expectation of 56 wins. But in those games, the Sox have 62. Thats likely a product of leaving blowout losses in...
  15. So Rizzo threw out the first pitch and it looked weak. He sat in the LF bleachers (with, for some reason, Cindy Crawford and Eddie Veddar) and heckled Ian Happ the entire game, and bought several hundred beers for fans. And Miguel Ballesteros hit his first career home run right to his seat, and Rizzo promptly dropped it. Later when asked, he said “I can’t pitch and I can’t catch. That’s why I had to retire.”
  16. Sort of where I think. I do think they will deal an OF to cover another position. Depth is good, but it’s kind of silly to be 4 deep in the OF while no one can, for example, play 2b. Returning pitchers on the 40 man, barring trades, include Crochet, Bello, Houck, Sandoval, Tolle, Dobbins, Early, Harrison, Crawford, Perales and (unless they follow my suggestion and move him to the pen) Fitts. Thats 11 pitchers on the 40 man just as starters, and still not counting Giolito and anyone added to protect them from Rule 5 (Sandlin? Paez? Mullins?) Houck is out next year and Dobbins probably until June/July and Perales needs time. But still, with up to 15 SPs on the 40 man roster in December, either they trade some controllable starting pitching or theyre already all set. I could see including young pitching with Abreu for Marte and having some left for ______ in the rotation. Fan choice there is Harrison but Early is certainly an option.
  17. Zero chance to Sox add TWO big bats plus some Joe Ryan-esque pitcher. If they soend that kind of money, it is a clear sign of Armageddon. As in, Henry knows something and figures he can’t take it with him anyway. And 1b? Expect some combination of Casas, Lowe and/or Campbell. Same names for DH, but either Yoshida in the mix. (And given the resurgences Story and Sale both had in their 4th years of their contracts, this might be the wrong time to unload Yoshida.) If Bregman stays, I expect Mayer to take over 2b. If Bregman moves on, I am hoping on Marte as a replacement. Probably not going to get him, but I am hoping…
  18. Because Marte can field…
  19. Things you can’t touch…
  20. On BTV, if I substitute Abreu, I have to add in Kristian Campbell and either Payton Tolle or Connelly Early to make a fair trade that would tempt me (assuming I was the Dbacks CBO). Starting to get pricey. I’d rather deal Duran and keep my cheaper talent that enables me to buy a SP…
  21. Not getting this obsession with Joe Ryan. If I soend some talent to get Marte, I much prefer free agents Dylan Cease and Ranger Suarez over Ryan. Suarez is probably cheaper, but maybe the Sox can get RHSP for once…
