  1. But then his IP per season are above average, which has a net positive effect on the rest of the pitching staff…
  2. But his OPSA in those starts is .845, which is a bit concerning. I’m still not convinced his starting role is all that tenuous…
  3. I’d be a bit wary of Houck as a starter. His numbers are impressive to date, but he only has 35 innings in MLB and his numbers in the minors were worse than his numbers in the majors. His success might not be as sustainable as we hope and it’s not hard to fathom him doing worse than the recent stretch of Perez. I think he might have a solid career in the bullpen. But I lack confidence in him as anything more than a spot starter…
  4. But would KC? I think Staumont has more promise than either Dalbec or Groome. If they’re in the market got a young, cheap, controllable 3b, they might bite. But they also might prefer keeping their e pitching assets…
  5. Christian Walker is having a meh season but is normally a good hitter. He’s sort of a wild card in the mix. The DBacks do have a top 1b prospect in Seth Beer they might want to make room for. Reportedly their minor league infield depth is weak. Hudson Potts for Walker…
  6. I doubt they deal Staumont. Those 100mph arms tend to get longer looks. BTV gives Santana a surplus value of 3.6, which gives a slew of options for Boston. Santana plus Barlow raises the price considerably and suggests Jeter Downs would be the cost…
  7. Santana is under contract for 2022 with an AAV of $8.8 million…
  8. So the Sox trade 2 pitchers and get one back? I do like Gray, but how much of an upgrade is he over Richards? Enough to merit unloading Sawamura?
  9. Another good option. His spray chart from the left side is not ideal for Fenway (he primarily has warning track power and is a dead pull hitter), but I’d take him nonetheless…
  10. Garrett Cooper would be my top choice, but he injured his elbow in a collision at 1b last week and is currently on the IL with no timetable for a return I’m aware of. But otherwise, he’d be a great add, I agree. I also agree the Steven Pearce style add is more likely than, say, Rizzo. I keep throwing Matt Beaty out there since he makes a ton of sense, but he’s apparently one of this bench players that is needed by his current team and seems pretty underrated. Problem is, I don’t think he’s that underrated by Friedman…
  11. So you think the Sox can drop Perez and his $6mill salary and add a 1B and another SP and still stay under? If they do that, they are probably adding a pitcher worse than Perez...
  12. Not really sure Richards and/or Perez are that high on anyone's shopping list. At some point, the Sox will need another starter, who presumably will also cost money. Sure Houck can take some games but if any Sox pitcher gets injured, then who? Especially with ERod up in the air right now, depleting the rotation is a very, very bad idea...
  13. No kidding. The trade deadline is a time for contenders to increase pitching depth, not deplete it...
  14. The announcers on TBS were talking about German's pitch count for about 3 innings prior, and how the plan was for about 80 pitches, and that he was approaching his season high total of 99 It becase obvious that the only reason Boone was even leaving German in was because he was thrwing a no hitter. Even if you question Boone's decision to pull him, which can certainly make sense in this case, at some point he did use relievers he has been relying on and they failed to hold a 4 run lead with only 6 outs to go. At some point, that's on the bullpen itself. And I can't believe I'm defending Aaron Boone...
  15. Ottvino had 2 bad outings on paper recently. But really, that loss to the Yankees he got beaten by two little pop ups that just found some dirt. In his previous 7 outings, he allowed 1 ER and had an OPS against of .536. and that OPSA was built on a .353 BABIP, which means he was pretty unlucky defensively and still managed to shut down the opposition. Whitlock has been terrific since the Braves kicked him around, but he's just as likely as Ottavino to get beaten by freakish pop-ups. The bullpen is working. No need to mess with the roles just yet...
  16. I’m sorry I only gave you one example. I should have added Tanner Roark (3.84) and Chris Archer (3.87), both of whom have better career ERAs than Jake Arrieta. And really, is Dallas Keuchel (3.63) a better pitcher over his career than Jon Lester? A lot of great pitchers do have elite ERAs. But the problem with ERA is it depends on too much non-pitching stuff like defense. (You know, like how Chris Archer just fell apart once he left Tampa.) And the differences aren’t all that great. We look at a pitcher with a 4.10 as average and a 3.80 as far superior, but that’s only 5 runs over 150 innings. Is that better pitching? Or better relievers behind you stranding inherited runners?
  17. Sticking with my Matt Beaty prediction at first. I’m on a roll after my clear victory picking the first 4 picks in the draft. (I’ve adopted the stance that I was right, but Pittsburgh, Texas, Detroit and Boston all got it wrong.)
  18. I hope this doesn’t mean you’re down on Ottavino after yesterday. He literally got “well placed pop up”ped to death…
  19. Because people clearly want to talk about Porcello. Is that wrong?
  20. Julio Teheran. Career ERA of 3.80, a shade behind the 3.79 of Trevor Bauer, who is all of 10 days older. Are they equal?
  21. Not really contradictory. There’s a difference between going in with te stuff you control (like payroll) vs the stuff you don’t (like health). There’s also a difference between using Sale and counting on Sale, as he could take longer to get ready and/or might re-injure himself quickly…
  22. The Dallas Cheap Foreign Agricultural Labor Force?
  23. Even if they fully or partially replace Dalbec doesn’t necessarily remove him from 2022 completely. Casas may or moat not be ready, but if nothing else, the Duran situation should have taught us that the Sox don’t blindly hand spots to rookies as Plan A…
  24. Maybe he’ll sign Porcello. Can’t get further under the radar than that…
