  1. Maybe a similar trade with similar goal of upgrading defense. Bogaerts and Dalbec to Atlanta for Freeman and Swanson. (And surprisingly, it does work out on BTV.)
  2. If ever there was a "sell high" opportunity eith Barnes, it is next month. Of course, I have serious doubts that he commands anywhere near $20mill AAV on the free agent market. He won't be as tough to re-sign and possibly more expensive to replace...
  3. And if the Sox traded Betts a year earlier, would they have gotten more for him or less?
  4. Cleveland apparently wanted Logan Allen as part of their return for Trevor Bauer, and he was the only MLB pitcher they received. He had value then, right? There’s a 5 and a half year gap between “then” and today. It’s not a binary choice…
  5. Opposing pitchers disagree with this statement….
  6. But we can all pile on Sergio Romo…
  7. If nothing else, I like the confidence…
  8. Is Davis’ stock rising that much? When I first predicted him at #3, no one had him in the top 15…
  9. Wasn’t he also salary-dumped by San Diego? But with one less year of control?
  10. Based on what?
  11. Logan Allen was also part of a return for Trevor Bauer and got San Diego Taylor Trammell. It’s not always just about if they pan out or not. Overpaying limits future trades. Maybe if the Sox held on to Allen, he could have been dealt later instead of Ty Buttrey or Jalen Beeks, for example. (Probably not instead of Kopech. Gotta be somewhat realistic here.)
  12. It worked out, but that does not mean it wasn’t an overpay. I was surprised the Sox gave up that much and took on the entire salary for a pitcher who, seven months earlier, was traded with salary dump BJ Upton for Carlos Quentin (salary dump who never played again), Cameron Maybin, and one ranked prospect in Matt Wisler…
  13. So far, yes. https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/athletics-reliever-sergio-romo-pulls-down-his-pants-during-foreign-substance-check/
  14. Well, Santana was only a minor league deal. Not like he was meant to be a major part of anything, except maybe the WOO lineup. As for Cordero, he might be worthwhile if MLB cracks down on the cheating pitchers...
  15. Does it work that way? The tax limit is based on the contractual AAV. I think to stay under (which should not be an issue anyway, since we are in it), shouldn't the AAV of the contract be under $5.5 mill?
  16. Eh. What's an extra $4mill to EEI?
  17. There is definitely something to the PR of going out and getting a player or two at the deadline that sends a message to the fans that “we still think we’re in this!” And any team needs pitching depth. With half the roster all dedicated to that one position, the more any team has the better. But this Sox team’s biggest need might be defense. But what position should they upgrade? The problem is, many of the weaker fielders are also top shelf hitters…
  18. I’d like to see Cordero face MLB pitchers who can’t use Spider Tack…
  19. It has its nicknames, but all of it comes from a sole sourced family business that keeps the exact location secret. A&E featured the current proprietor on an episode of “Dirty Jobs” and he wouldn’t do the episode without first blindfolding the cast and crew of the show before taking them to his source for filming…
  20. Typically internal solutions are first, since they can be undone. Most trades have some sort of “no backsies” policy, but they use confusing legal jargon. That said, one reason to have a good farm is prospects are a form of currency around MLB. You need them to make trades in many cases. And I don’t worry about losing Chavis. My fear with him is not many teams will have much interest. His only two useful skills are occasionally hitting with power and making league minimum wage…
  21. 1. Totally agree on steroids vs. doctoring baseballs. Cheating is cheating. 2. Whatever happened to the Mississippi Mud that every team is required to smear into baseballs before every game? 3. It does seem like some pitchers and MLB itself have lost sight of the fact that all of this “using foreign substances to get a better grip” was originally implemented because Roy Chapman was killed by being hit by a pitch. This is, what, 2021 now? We put a man on the moon over 50 years ago and yet we still haven’t figured out a way to get a better grip on a baseball?
  22. Sadly, the old-fashioned “Strike ‘Em, Throw ‘Em Out” double play is still a thing. Fortunately a team as inactive on the base paths as the Red Sox don’t have to deal with this very often…
  23. Cordero has an OPS of 1.152 in 98 PA. Not so sure the last 5 PA negate the previous 93. The game before, Duran went 1 for 4 with 3 K’s. Should he also get less consideration based on one game? Both will see time in Boston this year. Cordero is likely first, most because he’s already on the 40 man roster. So if you want Duran up, you should be calling for a Cordero promotion just to get it out of the way…
  24. It was odd logic way to imply Leiter will be a difficult sign and fall because of it (a la Eli Manning, another son of a pro athlete), but ultimately it did not impact his Sox selection. Now when the Tigers pick Davis, THAT will have a bigger impact on his wildly incorrect mini mock
