  1. ... unless it worked out
  2. Seems like you are prioritizing Duran over the current (winning!) team. The Sox don't need Duran right now. And there is no guarantee he can help beyond maybe being a pinch runner. Now when someone gets hurt or starts to actually struggle for a prolonged period, then maybe we see Duran...
  3. The "deadline" is the media concoction. Every year, they will look at some team and say "Why didn't the Jellyfish make a move? Why didn't the Buffaloes trade away for the future?" And fans buy into it. And the focus on such a small window. How many times have we seen a team go make a deal on, say, July 2, and do nothing on July 30/31st some ESPN bonehead is asking about their inactivity? And then some fans actually buy into it!!
  4. You're using the 2019 standings? Seriously? The Rays finished 12 games ahead of the Sox that year...
  5. The problem is the “middle” sample is about the same as the first and last samples combined…
  6. Injuries are likely to be a bigger factor than cuts and DFAs…
  7. He’s average to below average, yes. He’s not a guy you sign to turn your team around. But there are a lot of worse pitchers in the league and replacing him isn’t going to necessarily mean you improve. He might get released at some point this year, but if it means more innings from Yacksel Rios or Colten Brewer or maybe even Phillips Valdez, it might not necessarily be a good thing…
  8. The NFL actually counts on the drafts for ticket sales for some teams. When you draft first and suck, that high pick is somehow treated like a marketable glimmer of hope. MLB just can’t do that, since many players that get drafted are still years away…
  9. I’m more of a “they mean nothing until they get to AA” kind of guy….
  10. But if you have 3-4 seasons in MLB facing actual Major League pitchers, don’t you think you might find it a tad insulting that some kid whose never faced pitching at a higher level than 12th grade is getting more money than you? I get how the system works, but these negotiations have to be rough/delicate on small market GMs…
  11. The slot value for #1 is $8.4mill (per my extremely cursory research consisting of one Google search. Please correct me if necessary). If Pitt were to sign a player for slot value, he would be the second highest player on the team this year, behind Gregory Polanco, whom they would dump yesterday). Even going way underslot down to $4.4 million would make their pick the third highest player behind Polanco and the imprisoned Felipe Vazquez (who I’m pretty sure isn’t getting paid) and just ahead of All Star Adam Frazier, who won’t be a Pirate in 3 weeks. That whole scenario with that team is pretty effed up…
  12. It’s a tough spot for Cherington or any Pitt GM. How do you sign a high school kid for $8.4 million today and then tomorrow go to an actual Major League ballplayer asking for $4million in arbitration and tell him that’s too much money?
  13. Bloom did make one of those trades, just not for the Sox…
  14. BTV gives Pitts a surplus value of 2.4. The guy is a former 1st round pick, but he’s struggling so far this year, at least numbers-wise. He’s not going to get a game-changing player (unless said player is really expensive), but he’s not completely untradable either…
  15. I think Groome is in play. Ward is a tougher sell than the Sham Wow…
  16. Exactly. A lot of people are extremely down on Andriese (very likely including Andriese himself). But at the end of the day, this complaint is starting to look like “the mop up guy struggles if we use him in crucial innings!!” I don’t think the Sox are going to go all Jack Welch and remove the bottom 10%, but they will very likely be adding depth. Especially in the rotation, where the Sox starter depth is non-existent, and for a team with two starting pitchers (Eovaldi and Richards) who visit the Injured List more often than they visit their own mothers, this is just flat out unacceptable…
  17. They faced 29yo career minor leaguer Mark Appel, a man who has redefined the phrase “Draft Bust”…
  18. Yeah the standings I looked at for 2020 omitted that column…
  19. It’s not the minor league talent that surprises me; it’s the reclamation projects like Springs, Mazza, Feyereisen, Wacha, Brett Phillips…
  20. Like I said before - they’re the defending AL champs and we’re drafting 4th. Pretty sure we’re the pesky ones in this situation…
  21. A tad harsh on Andriese. He is struggling now but had a terrific April and has had a career that shows he is better than this. Quick trivia question: Who had more career fWAR coming into 2021 - Matt Andriese or Matt Barnes?
  22. He can take a seat next to Garin Cecchini…
  23. No. Putting him on the 60 day IL starts his service clock. It's the same reason Mata is not on it....
  24. We could probably bring Barnes back for $16 million…
  25. Cut ‘em all!!!
