  1. But for how many years do you extend a 37yo pitcher with 2500 career IP?
  2. So in this case, the contract and control do not align. Conflict resolved. They are both right and I'm the dumbass...
  3. It does imply it. Sherman says "the ret of the season." Bowden says "all ofthe remaining contract." Who is right? Sherman's take does make more sense. Unless Texas is a phenomenally stupid franchise...
  4. Twins RHP Jose Berrios. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/berrijo01.shtml Don't be embarrassed. not knowing all this probably means you have a life...
  5. I'm not as high on some of them as you. I would not deal Casas or Duran for a rental. I might move Downs for the right rental. I would be more hesitant with Seabold than Downs, but only because Seabold is so close to MLB. Jimenez, Bello, Ramirez and Yorke are all in play, however. The Sox could probably get a worthwhile rental like Schoop for an inconsequential minor leaguer. But for an impact player, they will have to give to get...
  6. Would you trade Duran for Berrios? Berrios is the best name available who is not a rental, as he is controlled for 2023. But his price tag is probably also a lot higher than it will be for the rental Scherzer..
  7. He has come a long way, but he is not some sort of unique talent that cannot be found in any other farm system, either. The farm is getting better, and it is light years ahead of the 2018-2019 systems. But I don't think the Sox prospects are as highly regarded by other GMs as they are by many Sox fans...
  8. Joel Sherman has a different and more specific take, which is probably correct. "The Yankees will be receiving more than Joey Gallo and Joely Rodriguez from the Rangers – Texas also is paying both players’ salaries the rest of the season, The Post has learned." https://nypost.com/2021/07/29/the-yankees-joey-gallo-trade-just-got-a-little-bit-better/ To be fair, it's not like Sherman states Texas is paying 2022 or NY is. He sort of implies it through omission, which is not the same.
  9. From mlbtr: "July 29, 7:20am: The Rangers are paying all of Gallo’s remaining contract, tweets Jim Bowden of The Athletic." Ambiguity?
  10. Well, they had to get something out of this deal. They clearly did not want good prospects. Apparently all they wanted was to foot the bill...
  11. Fair point, but I think the "right deal" for Casas might be a lower bar than many of us expect...
  12. And Rizzo had entered the discussion at some point. The only flaw with Rizzo is the Cubs probably want to retain at least one of their trio of departing stars. It certainly won't be Bryant, as he has been advocating for free agency since before he made his MLB debut, which sounds ridiculous but is not an exaggeration. It actually happened that soon. I have no idea if either Baez or Rizzo will be easier to sign. Baez is up against a tough but slowly dwindling free agent market for shortstops. But Rizzo is apparently some sort of Jed Hoyer favorite that he has brought in to three different MLB organizations...
  13. The Sox would actually save money if they just released him vs trading him and his whole salary. If they waive him and he gets claimed, they pay him nothing. If he clears waviers, which is certainly likely, the Sox are on the hook for his 2022 salary minus a pro-rated portion of the league minimum. So unless they trade him and his salary for something, a simple DFA and release makes a lot more sense...
  14. Honestly, except maybe Casas, do the Sox really even have any untouchable prospects (without including the 2021 draftees)? And even Casas, while certainly a good prospect, shouldn't be untouchable in the right deal. He's a very one dimensional prospect. If he struggles to hit, what's left? Mitch Moreland without the defense? I see people listing Noah Song and his 0 career IP above college as untouchable. He might be talented, but that designation is a bit much. His saving grace is he is probably out of sight/out of mind among a lot of baseball people. I'm far from advocating selling the farm, but let's be a bit reasonable with who's available and who isn't...
  15. Time spent on the 60 day IL would NOT count towards his roster control for 2022. That would just spill the requirement over to 2023, much like happened with the Red Sox when they selected the oft-injured Adam Stern, who actually may have never been injured...
  16. If the idea is to trade Richards and his entire salary for nothing, just release him. Richards is one of those guys I thought years ago would and should (due to chronic injury issues) make a lights out closer. But then that was back before I knew anything about spin rates and how to doctor them..
  17. Very possible I have my doubts any team is going to want to dedicate a roster spot for all of 2022 to a pitcher with 5 IP above A ball since 2019…
  18. 74 walks in 385 PA…
  19. Schoop or Asdrubal…
  20. Astros continue to shore up that bullpen. Yesterday Kendall Graveman. Today Yimi Garcia..
  21. Could have stepped the Astros of their title and the Red Sox of their Apple Bar privileges…
  22. Surprisingly high walk total…
  23. Postseason is a crapshoot. I read it on here. And honestly, pitcher fatigue is a far bigger factor n the postseason than record against .500 or better teams. (Personal theory with anecdotal evidence and no statistical support.) I’m not going to say it’s a useless stat, but I’m not sure it’s a simple as “they’ll lose.” For example, White Sox vs Teams .500 or better - 21-27 Teams better than .500 - 20-24 Teams better than .575 - 7-10 All losing records, but they also win a greater percentage of the time vs better teams…
  24. But most of us Red Sox fans are also Patriots’ fans who saw the team punished to ridiculous levels for a scandal that no one proved existed and was pushed incredibly by shoddy ESPN coverage. And yes, I read the Wells Report. My first conclusion from it was NFL referees have no clue how to use pressure gauges…
  25. Most teams that get into the playoffs go below .500 in them
