  1. It would e interesting if the Sox instead used Bradley as the trade bait to help some non-contending team offload a very expensive and useless contract. Bradley for Patrick Corbin?
  2. The prospects can also make an immediate impact. One of them is a middle infielder, which is a position the Sox have some MiLB depth in. So maybe the new MIF (Hamilton) is part of a deal come July. Or maybe they move Yorke for a pitcher. Prospect trades can be as much about the present as any other deal…
  3. I’d also throw in this deal potentially gives a better shot to Jarren Duran. If JBJ is not really a full time CF anymore, it might open the door for Duran to get some OJT in MLB. This theory also might explain why Locastro was non-tendered…
  4. There’s also Corey Dickerson (the journeyman), Jorge Soler (the hitter) and Gregory Polanco (the “how is he still only 30 years old?” guy
  5. Well, really is a roughly $3.5 mill (minus whatever Milwaukee pays, if anything) since they also list Renfroe’s salary. Right now the outfield is, to be kind, in flux. But I imagine JBJ will supplement Duran in CF and another LF will be acquired somehow before the season starts. Free agency has a few names left, like Schwarber (the familiar), Bryant (the star) and Rosario (the underrated), Castellanos (the, I don’t know, handsome guy maybe? Is he handsome?) and Conforto (the Met)…
  6. I will say I don’t think anyone is dazzled. The only highlight to me is it looks like they intend to keep both Houck and Whitlock as the high leverage guys in the bullpen. But even that’s not as certainty…
  7. Lots of players have the occasional rough postseason. A rough two week stretch, even at a crucial time, is no reason to dump a player. Renfroe struggled heavily at the end of the Houston series, but you know who else did? Everyone else…
  8. I can help. I know I’m that list. It doesn’t bother me, either…
  9. So far, I couldn’t be more confused. I think the rotation is set and the bullpen (with both Houck and Whitlock) is very close. So that’s probably not true. And the only four starters I think are locks for opening day (barring injury) are Devers at 3b, JD at DH, Vazquez at catcher, and Bogaerts at SS. And I have a few residual doubts about Bogaerts. Dalbec at 1b also looks good, but I also think a LHH compliment is likely, someone to act as a place holder for Casas. The incredibly obvious choice to me is Brad Miller. But I also pegged him as an incredibly obvious choice last winter and he went and signed somewhere else….
  10. I would expect Bloom to sign at least one more outfielder, but I also think he is going to want to know the implications of the new CBA first, which is why he (among others) avoided the players with larger contracts so far. That doesn’t mean once there is a new CBA, Bloom will go on a spending spree. But I expect if the conditions are not too restrictive, he will start at least working on contracts larger than those to date…
  11. When Mike Lowell came to Boston and a new league, he said the biggest problem wasn’t the big name veteran pitchers. It was testing to adjust to all the pitchers he knew nothing about…
  12. Hey there may be room for Jarren Duran after all, even if the Sox sign Schwarber or Kris Bryant. The only guy we know out there is Verdugo (for now).Certainly it’s very likely Hernandez is out there, but I’m not calling it definite. His glove plays anywhere and the 2b market looks decrepit…
  13. I also think the uncertainty of the new CBA influenced the off-season so far. Sure, Bradley is expensive, but if the new CBA in unfavorable, his term is still very short. It’s probably not a coincidence that several other big spending clubs, notably the Yankees and Dodgers, but also Phillies, Giants and Angels have not gotten involved in the top tier free agent market either. Even Syndergaard was only signed for one year…
  14. He’s not a fourth outfielder today. But there are several options left that could put him in that position…
  15. More likely they don’t like those players for the number of years it takes to sign them. I’m sure they love to have Corey Seager next year. But maybe they’re not so high on the notion of having him until 2031…
  16. Bradley is this year’s Ottavino. A questionable contract Bloom took on to get some prospects he values…
  17. One thing about this trade is it shows Bloom will sell high. It’s always tough to sell anything high because you don’t always know it’s at its peak value. But here’s the thing - most times, you really do know…
  18. The most obvious option is the guy already here - Jarren Duran…
  19. Calling Story to the Astros. For the money they offered Correa earlier. I think Correa goes to the Carolina Panthers and takes over for Sam Darnold. Not like he could do that much worse…
  20. I’m not up to “like” but I’m not quite at “hate to the point of panic.” Like I said, sometimes he just knows something about these jalopies. I’m more in the “let’s see how this plays out” phase…
  21. Defense? And to get a couple prospects? I have wanted Bradley back, but I also wanted to keep Renfroe. Maybe the plan is for JBJ to be Duran’s late inning defensive replacement? Or maybe this was to move Kike to 2b and Verdugo to RF to open up LF for a much more exciting hitter. Schwarber? Kris Bryant? Nick Castellanos? Mike Conforto? Maybe an Oakland salary dump like Ramon Laureano?
  22. Possible. Of course both had extremely strong stretches with the Sox. Especially Richards once he moved to the bullpen. And the Sox DID get very far in the postseason with those guys on the roster, so it’s not like they prevented anything. I think the plan for Hill is to last until Paxton is ready. Then his ever-present blisters can come back…
  23. His moves excite no one, but a lot of people were critical of his plan last off-season and a lot of people were critical of him at the trade deadline, and yet the team turned out pretty good. Maybe he knows something about these jalopies we don’t?
  24. Well, would you prefer a Sox team that signed no big deals and went to the ALCS? Or do you like the Yankee way of stacking up big contact after big contract with Stanton and Cole and Hicks and LeMahieu and Chapman, all so they can play one playoff game and lose it?
  25. Per B-R.com, he has signed seven contracts with the Sox, but this is his first one since 2015…
