Hey, at least they hit the ball. Something good could happen if you put it in play (the hit the Rangers got to tie the game being an example). It’s the K’s in those situations that are truly failures.

Can’t really blame Weissert on that one. Wakefield threw his knuckler faster than that ball was hit.

I’m a little surprised Bennett is back out there, although last night’s Sandoval outing is probably factoring in.

Barring anything catastrophic, the starters for the Yankee playoff series will be Gray, Tolle and Suarez in some order. After tonight, Bennett's next start would be next Tuesday on 5 days rest and then the last day of the season (4 days rest), though if he even makes that one, it would be abbreviated.

Unfortunately, he is due to make 2 more starts unless they go with Bello or an opener + Bello. Right now, he'd go Sunday against the Rays and then again a week from Saturday against the Cubs. Hopefully, next week they will be aligning things for their playoff rotation so that Saturday start could change. After the 27th, you will not see him again. I might have a better shot at the playoff roster than Sandoval, and I haven't played competitive baseball since American Legion ball over 50 years ago (where I was strictly a bench warmer, albeit on a very good team). He had to have gone through the lineup at least once; he went 2 2/3 (8 outs) plus he gave up 4 runs, so a minimum of 12 hitters. I think a couple guys were left on in the 2nd and maybe again in the 3rd, so I'm guessing he saw 14-15 hitters.

Should anyone be shocked at tonight's result? Be realistic. With Sandoval starting, the pitching matchup never favored the Sox, even when it was Bradford for the Rangers. They had a better shot against Bradford, but that's it, a better shot. Once Texas went with DeGrom, they had a huge pitching advantage, even moreso since DeGrom has been lights out his past 3-4 starts.

Detroit beat Toronto tonight, dropping the Sox magic number to 5 over both the Blue Jays and Texas. It's actually 3 over one of those 2 clubs; the Jays follow Boston to Arlington for 3 games starting Friday and one of them has to lose at least twice.

What would really help our chances in the first round would be to have the Yankees close the gap with the Rays to 1 game between now and the final weekend. That would force both teams to go all out to fend off each other and not allow them to set up their rotations for the first round. -
Magic number to clinch a playoff spot drops to 6 with 12 games remaining. Texas will be throwing out all stops the next 3 games as they are not only fighting for a wild card slot but also for the AL West title.

One nit: the only way everyone isn’t home for Halloween is if the World Series goes 7 games. But your real point is noted.

I posted before the game that Cameron has a sub 2 ERA over the past month or so. This was unlikely to be a high scoring game

Cameron has been pitching extremely well lately; his last 5 starts have yielded a 1.74 ERA over 30+ innings. He’s held the opponent scoreless 3 times including a complete game one hit shutout. This will be tough, especially given the Sox are not as good against lefties.

With Toronto’s loss tonight, the Sox magic number drops to 8 over the Blue Jays and Texas (pending the out come of the Rangers-DBacks game). It remains 7 to eliminate the Orioles.

A lot is when you play a team. Even bad teams have good series/weeks. They just don’t happen too often. Good teams have bad series/weeks. As for tonight’s Angels pitcher; he’s had a 1.7 ERA since the start of August (when the Angels replaced their pitching coach and then entire Angels staff has improved the last month as well.

Johnson has a 1.7 ERA since August 1; this is going to be tough to overcome. Would have preferred the Angels take another couple days to start playing well.
