  1. The Rice-Lynn-Evans OF in the late 70s is the modern gold standard for Sox outfields. Going way back, the Haary Hooper-Tris Speaker-Duffy Lewis trio a hundred years ago featured 2 Hall of Famers. The required skill sets was so different that it's hard to make comparisons.
  2. Very true. Evans didn't become the hitter many think of until he was around 26 or 27, by which point he had been in the league 5-6 years. His 900 OPS seasons didn't until he had been around a decade.
  3. Pocello should have been out of that game with 2 runs scored. Gorman blowing the ball 4 to Donaldson cost him 2 runs and mayb another IP.
  4. Let's at least send the right guy to the eye doctor. DiMuro was not behind the plate after the 2nd or 3rd inning. He got nailed with a foul tip and had to leave the game. Gorman (started the game at 2nd and took over) was the guy who was absolutley brutal behind the plate.
  5. I'd be more impressed if you had made this comment PRIOR to Layne, Tazawa, etc melting down. Afterwards is 20-20 hindsight.
  6. DVR is your friend, plus you can fastforward through the commercials
  7. Not at all. Not unlike mine, and I've told people for years any 4 year old can spell it (well, both mine could ) Besides, if we can handle Yastrzemski, Stankiewicz is a piece of cake.
  8. Nice try, but I already issued my mea culpa on that one, along with how it happened.
  9. The biggest choke in professional sports post season history. I prefer to think of it as the greatest comeback in professional sports history.
  10. I think they were daguerreotypes.
  11. OTOH only one team in the history of major league sports has blown a 3.9 games to 0 lead. It wasn't just 3-0, it was 3.9 (alright, 3.8888888-0)
  12. Maybe not, but I still don't think it would have mattered. The Sox never would have or could have come close to the offer in NY (a contract will only get worse valuewise for the Yankees over the coming years). And his agent was/is Boras, which almost always means the client is going to the highest bidder.
  13. Would not have mattered. He was always going to go to the highest bidder, and whatever the Sox would have offered, the Yankees would have offered $1 more. Damon made a big deal out of saying he'd never go to NY; I don't think Ellsbury made any such statement or even hinted at it.
  14. I thought his "explanation" of that last night was interesting. For those who didn't hear it, Boggs said he had an agreement with Jean Yawkey on a new multiyear contract, but she died and the new owners (Harrington, etc) kiboshed the offer, so he moved on. If true, it was one of many things Harrington did to screw up the Sox in his initial years at the helm. As for the ring, who cares. Maybe he could have left it home but if he wears it all the time, or wears it all the time to baseball related functions, I have no issue. 99.9% of the people didn't notice, just some media types looking to stir up trouble.
  15. He does seem to be able to get through the opponents batting order 1 time. The problem is, sometimes it's the first time through (last night) and sometimes it's the second time through (when 4-5 runs are already up on the scoreboard). And there's no pattern to that.
  16. In all seriousness. Once ERod comes back (and assuming he shows anything at all), they have to DFA him. He really looks like he needs a change of scenery to have any hope of resurrecting his career. It's not going to happen in Boston. If he goes 10-2 with the Padres with a 2.75 ERA, it doesn't matter because the only value he has to the Red Sox is what he can contribute to THEM.
  17. I have the role for him. From all reports, he runs very well (didn't he supposedly beat Mookie in a foot race). He can serve as a pinch runner for Ortiz or Hanigan late in a game where the Sox need to score to tie a game up. Worst case, in that role maybe he scores a time or two in a crucial situation. Best case is he hurts himself and gives the Sox a real injury with which to DL him.
  18. Perhaps they could hire Moose and Rocco to "induce" a real injury.
  19. I'll give a him break on the first homer. Yeah, he missed location but if that had been much lower it would have bounced. The hitter got him, it happenes. The other two were bad pitches, no other description applies. I will give Story credit, he fouled off several pretty tough pitches before he crushed the mistake. But a pitcher has to put a guy away on 0-2.
  20. Actually, I loved the fact that he went back out for the 5th. Gave the crowd a chance to boo him on the walk to the dugout when Farrell did take him out.
  21. Ah, my bad. I wanted to see what his days of rest were in 2007, looked at the Game Log link and it defaulted to 2014. Still, his year was far from being good. (Wish there was a strikethrough formatting option.)
  22. He had 1 good year, 2008 (18-3, 2.90 ERA and he still led the league in BB allowed). 2007 was his next best year (15-12, 4.40) and he pitched only in relief that season, After 2008 he went completely downhill with ERAs of 5.76. 4.69, 5.30 and 8.28 over 56 games his last 4 years. Other than 2008, he was an utter disaster as a starting pitcher. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/matsuda01.shtml While the Sox may have played a part in ruining him, he also seemed to refuse to try and adapt to any North American baseball ways as well. Both parties have some blame in this.
  23. Yep. In 2013, David Ross sat a week on the concussion DL then came back. About a month later, he went back on the concussion DL and was there for a couple months. Now, catching and the IF/OF are 2 different animals, but the team has to keep Holt out until he is properly healed. I think I read that this is his second time with one, so extra precaution is in order.
  24. Gotcha. Perhaps 3 pages within the current season would be a good rule of thumb. As I said, it won't affect me much, I very rarely start threads. Thanks.
