  1. Question: How do you handle the staff down the stretch? Do you keep with the rotation as is or do you send Price and Porcello every 5th day (off days could affect this) and pencil in the other 3 in between? The former gives Price, Porcello, Pomeranz and ERod 5 starts each with Buchholz/Wright getting 4. It also means Buchholz/Wright would pitch a potential Monday game in case of a tie for the final wildcard playoff spot, but puts Price in line to pitch the Tuesday one-game wild card playoff game. The latter gives Price 6 starts, Porcello 5, with Pomeranz, ERod and Buchholz splitting 13 games (I assume Pomeranz would get 5 and the others 4 each). One of them would get a potential Monday game with Porcello set up for a Tuesday game.
  2. He is doing remarkable Pedro Cerrano imitation.
  3. As of right now (12:20 CDT September 2) he's not even on the 40 man roster. I just looked at the Red Sox site; after having 39 names on it for all of August, it now has 40 names (unless I am completely missing something), none of which are Moncada. So that means somebody has to go to add Moncada (and someone else has to go for LHP Robby Scott, who is supposed to be "selected" from Pawtucket and brought up as well). Kelly and Marrero have been added to the expanded active roster already.
  4. FYI, Kimbrel threw 22 on Tuesday. That's a fairly high number. Had he thrown 12 or 14, I would agree with you. JF didn't want to use Tazawa. That's why he kept Abad in as long as he did. It would help the manager out a lot if he had guys who come in and get the needed outs 9/10 times. Unfortunately, it seems that with this pen it's a 50-50 proposition.
  5. Yep. For starters, they mean a little more over time (as the vagaries of run and bullpen support even out over the years). They certainly meant a lot more back when starters routinely went 9 innings unless they were pinch hit for.
  6. Tazawa poaches a win from a more deserving Ross Jr.
  7. Just be glad style points don't count in baseball.
  8. As a right handed hitter, how the hell do you foul a 97 mph fastball to 3rd?
  9. He seems to go after the first pitch a lot in those situations, in stark contrast to his normal approach.
  10. I would leave Hill up here; he's a better bet to at least hit a fly ball than Shaw is right now.
  11. They'd better take the lead here, because if this game goes extras, the Sox are in trouble. Rays have a better bullpen to begin with and the Sox have already burned through 4 of the available guys. And damn Longoria leads off the next inning.
  12. Probably true, but it also tells me how little faith he has in Tazawa at this point.
  13. Is Ziegler not available today for some reason? Or is Kimbrel not available for the 9th?
  14. I'd settle for 3 outs and no runs, clean inning or not.
  15. Now they just need to find someone from the bullpen (besides Kimbrel) who can pitch successfully with a lead. Oh, and drill Longoria every time he comes up.
  16. A actual hit with the bases loaded? Is that allowed?
  17. Getaway day, which usually translates to zero offense for the Sox. Why is that?
  18. None of them, rosters expand Thursday.
  19. He has never been in the starting line-up as a lead-off hitter. Those 5 plate appearances in the #1 spot in the batting order are spread over 5 games and are as a pinch hitter. They include 1 such game this year. The numbers in the #2 slot in the order are similar, 5 plate appearances over 5 games.
  20. August 29, 1977 - Jim Rice hit 3 home runs against Oakland in an 8-7 loss at Fenway August 29, 1983 - Jim Rice hit 3 home runs at Toronto as the Red Sox won the second game of a double header 8-7. Those were the only 3 homer games of Rice's career
  21. This is not a World Series winning team. There are too many holes; the bullpen leads the way, but there are a few in the line-up as well. OTOH, compared to the last 2 years, isn't it better to actually have games that mean something at this point of the season?
  22. If you are talking about the May 29th game, Buchholz only pitched the 10th inning of that one. Sox scored 2 in the 11th and Uehara got the save.
  23. I'm wondering if Buchholz can get ready that quickly yet. It's a major adjustment going from having as much time as you need as a starter to better be ready in 2-3 minutes as a reliever. Still doesn't change the fact that Yost has a stable of relievers that can be depended on to get outs. Farrell has a box of chocolates, many of whom seem unable to pitch with a lead.
