  1. Well after a couple of games where the starters didn't get out if the 5th, the bullpen has to be taxed. You can't burn the pen for 7-8 innings. Modern pens don't have a real long man anymore. There were several times when I was a kid when Bob Stanley would come in in the 1st or 2nd and finish the games. I recall once when he pitched from the 1st into extra innings. This is part of the marathon, it's not the sprint portion of the season. More a hope game tonight; hope Johnson can keep it close and get some runs off a guy who can be tough at times.
  2. And again today, Sox fielding costs the pitcher. Both runs unearned due to the Hernandez drop and it cost Wright 13 extra pitches.
  3. If you didn't see the game, he deserved a lot better in the first. 5 of the 8 balls he walked the first two Rays hitters on could have been called strikes (and were for both sides after that half inning). An ump may not give a pitcher the border on one side of the strike zone, but Barrett wasn't giving Pomeranz any side. Even with that, if Benintendi catches the ball near the wall (which he should have), Pomeranz gets out of that inning either unscored on or maybe giving up one run.
  4. So next time it comes on, turn the sound down so you won't be subjected to it.
  5. I was just looking at his numbers; he's got some pretty good minor league stats. 33-17 in four years, ERA of 2.75, WHIP of 1.15. Above all, he has always thrown strikes, with roughly a 3:1 K:BB ratio. His big league numbers over 15 games haven't matched his MiLB stats, but he's continued his trend of throwing strikes and he's had some pretty good outings since he came up last July. He's also only 24, so he looks like he could be around a while as a #2-#3 type guy. In any case, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss him as a total nobody. The Bucs seem like they have a decent hurler in him.
  6. Unfortunately, that first inning is going to end his day early; he's at 75 pitches through 4 (32 of those in the first), so this is probably his last inning.
  7. d-money is only here when the Sox are behind.
  8. Going to be hard to do since they play Pittsburgh.
  9. You can put it on the board, yeess! Actually, Kimmi, et. al. may not have the, ahem, pleasure of listening to Hawk. Ken is lousy and can be annoying, but anyone who is willing to call Joe West a joke on the air at least rates a few extra broadcast points in my book. And Hawk doesn't pretend to be anything other than what he is, a homer. Thorne, on the other hand just comes across as a total asshat.
  10. I swear, I did not see that article before Mr. Rice linked it. But with Mookie and now Hanley back from the flu, I started wondering when Ross could come off the DL.
  11. Robbie Ross is eligible to come off the DL on April 13. While I can see him throwing a couple of times at Pawtucket/Portland in a rehab, he likely will be back with Boston early next week at the latest. Who goes? The obvious choice would be Ben Taylor, since he has options, but one has to wonder if Abad, a guy who seems to be in witness protection, will be the one. He has yet to appear in a game; I'm not sure he has even warmed up. They used call-up Noe Ramirez against the Tigers last week instead of Abad. Thoughts?
  12. How ironic. When Earl Weaver first took over the Orioles in the late 60s/early 70s, he had Brooks Robinson and Mark Belanger on the left side. At first, he had the infield grass cut high, reasoning his guys would make more plays. But he soon noticed that opposing teams fielders were making great plays, robbing O's hitters of base hits while his gold glovers were making those same balls look easy. So Weaver then had the groundcrew mow the infield at Memorial Stadium to a nub. Now, his guys were making great plays while the balls his guys were hitting got through for base hits. They really ought to read some history.
  13. I would amend that to just the ability to throw a pitch to a certain spot (whether in or out of the strike zone). A fastball pitcher climbing the ladder on a hitter is an example of command. Moving the ball in out, up or down at will is command.
  14. Loose is one thing. Ready is another. I doubt Bogaerts did much baseball related activity while he was gone, and Hanley had the full blown flu. He can't be at 100% yet. He still might be better than what they've been putting out there, but I would temper expectations. It might take another couple days.
  15. Because the way the scoring works, the inner bullseye ring is worth 50 points and therefore the best throw is actually one that lands in the triple (inner ring) within the 20 point segment (worth 60 points). The same thrown within the 17, 18 or 19 point sections is worth more than a bullseye as well. Also, in traditional darts, you start with a fixed scored (301 points, 501) with the aim of reducing it to zero, with the last dart ending in a bullseye or the double (or outer ring) If you make a throw that reduces your total below zero, your score goes back to where it was before your turn. So just throwing bullseyes will never win you a game; you have to be able to "command" the board.
  16. You might be able to live with top stats if Brooks Robinson is playing 3rd (yea, I know Brooksie was higher than that offensively) You might be able to live with the bottom if Miggy Cabrera is playing 3rd. Dealing with the combination? An adjective escapes me.
  17. 4, 3 of them were by Moreland. Not exactly strung together.
  18. This. I'm pretty certain that does not include Young, Holt, Sandoval and Hernandez in the line-up on a daily basis, especially when sprinkled with some Selsky.
  19. I had no issue with Sale facing Castellanos. Today, Sale had struck him out twice and induced a pop up. And he still got a ground ball, just not one hit in a good spot. If Hembree gives up the same ball, everyone is screaming that Farrell should have left Sale in. And getting Bogaerts back will help a little, but I'm sure he's done zero baseball related activity since Wednesday. Hanley will not be 100% for a while after he gets back either. Remember, he's got the full blown flu. The Sox just have to try and tread water until they get everyone back. That very well could take another couple weeks to get to a point where everyone is close to 100%.
  20. Need to be careful here. Base open and he's handled Castellanos pretty well today.
  21. Betts ties a major league record.
  22. I'm getting off of the CBS Sportsline that Verlander is less than thrilled with the home plate umpire's strike zone. Does JV have a point? Has th eplate ump been consistent regarding the low strike? IS Sale getting the same strike zone or a bigger one?
  23. It is amazing how fans don't bat an eyelash if a guy goes 0-12 or 1-15 in August but are ready to ship him to the Gulf Coast League if he does it in early April.
  24. Sandoval has worked Verlander for 16 pitches in 2 ABs. Walk and a K, but if it helps get JV out of the game an inning or so earlier ...
