  1. Good thing it’s not the playoffs then.
  2. Austin gets 5. Yankees once again get the lesser penalty under Chief Justice Torre. They always do. Slight revision to my prediction; after appeal, Kelly 5 games, Austin 3 (was 5 and 2).
  3. Good for you. Being in Illinois (a top 5 HS wrestling state), I've had the pleasure of seeing some of the best kids in the country over the years, especially back when my son was competing and I would make those 3-4 hour drives on a Friday night/Saturday morning to Chicagoland or down to the St. Louis area which I did seemingly every weekend in his 3 varsity years. We were a large school on the western edge of the state so they traveled to seek better competition elsewhere in the state. It never translated to a state trip for him (lost the match in OT to go to Champaign for the final weekend) but he was better for it. What he (and all wrestlers, no matter what their skill level) got out of it was discipline and learning to push yourself to what you thought was the limit and even beyond. I'll hire a former wrestler any day of the week.
  4. Try rereading. I said that MLB said the play was nonreviewable because Holt did not attempt to complete the DP, so they couldn't make a judgement on it. I said that the umps basically told Cora that next time have him throw the ball. And where the spikes were/weren't only is part of the illegality of the slide. The current rules also say you have to be able to maintain contact with the base after the slide. It's why you see guys grabbing the bag as they go by. Austin ends up 2-3 feet beyond the bas with no way to stay in contact; that alone makes it illegal, and that rule has been in place for several years.
  5. Did jad need to put the tongue in cheek smiley in there?
  6. No matter how you want to parse it, Austin went in spikes up. That's a no-no. Reynolds said as much in the postgame show, and he was putting at least part of the blame on Holt. And even the audio from your clip (featuring Yankee announcers) made reference to "the high spikes part" being taken care of on the field (as it was). Me thinks you would be singing a different tune if that was Cano taking that throw.
  7. Older boy was a good high school wrestler; I still go to the high school meets even though he graduated 7 years ago.
  8. Holt is 5'10" 180, Austin is 6'2 220. Holt may be a mediocre player, but he's not stupid.
  9. It was a nice throw by takedown. Unfortunately, Kelly immediately gave up the escape and was in the process of being taken down. Still, when the cavalry arrived, it was 2-1 Kelly.
  10. Actually, MLB did not rule anything on the slide. Since Holt made no attempt to complete the DP, they said it was not reviewable. Telling was what the ump said to Cora, "my advice is next time have him throw the ball" or words to that effect (the my advice was definitely there). Tells me it would have been ruled illegal had a throw attempt been made. MLB network played the audio after the inning.
  11. I've been muttering to myself since last year that Sanchez needs to be knocked off the plate by Sox pitching (not beaned, knocked off the plate). Waaaay too comfortable up there.
  12. Whoever he used was going into an almost impossible situation. Sit on the bench for nearly 4 hours on a freezing cold night and come in to face a guy who throws 98 on a bad day. Maybe Leon was the warmest of the bunch? (was he or Swihart in the pen to warm up the pitchers, who ever it was was probably the warmest).
  13. Unless warnings are issued prior the game. Porcello has to go some distance tonight. Wouldn't be shocked to see Poyner sent down for the minimum time and another reliever brought up just to have another arm.
  14. Actually, Judge may have saved Kelly from a major hit from behind. Big guys like that tend to be pretty mild mannered. If he had wanted to, he could have really hurt him. He didn't. Graig Nettles or Mickey Rivers he ain't (or Sanchez for that matter, to use a more recent Yankee brawler).
  15. Or if Tek is unavailable, maybe David Ross next time he's in town to do a game. Heck, get one of the Molina brothers on the phone, Vaz has worked out with them. Agreed, Tek may not have been that savvy in his 2nd or 3rd year either. Vaz will learn. Those of you who have seen most of the games, is he still going to that stand up high fastball on 0-2? Or scraping the dirt to make the batter think he's setting up opposite of where he actually is? I haven't noticed it as much, but I don't get to see every game. To me, those were silly things that fool nobody.
  16. Still sticking with my prediction of Torre justice, Kelly 5 games, Austin 2.
  17. Exactly, he had plenty of time to get there. Should have been up and moving as soon as the bat slammed. Also, a catcher should never take his mask off in those situations; if the other guy is dumb enough to punch a mask and/or helmet, let him. If you watch the Varitek -ARod incident, Varitek walks down the line between ARod and Arroyo and never takes his mask off; it gets knocked off once the benches clear.
  18. Tells me Vazquez had no idea Kelly was going to plunk the punk. Varitek anticipated those situations and was ready for them. He probably ordered them when needed.
  19. Difference in background. Vazquez went after him like a soccer player (which I'm sure he played growing up) Moreland came racing in and tried to crossbody block Austin. Didn't quite get there in time, but tried to play it like a football player (which I'm sure he played growing up).
  20. Here's a nice difference from last season: Grand Slams: 2017 (166 games, including the postseason) - 0 2018 (11 games) - 3
  21. No it wouldn't. As I say in my signature, they could go 0-162 and it still wouldn't be enough (now THAT would be fun).
  22. Prediction: Kelly gets 5 games, Austin gets 2. Torre justice.
  23. What was wrong with that inning? It’s what you want from him, a couple of weak grounders and a K.
  24. Merely 1 of 60-65 games they will lose this year. One of those nights.
  25. I have no problem with that being called a strike but it hasn’t been one all night.
