    In looking at Heaney’s game log this year, it looks like he’s either been pretty good or absolutely horrible. Not a lot of 3 runs in 6 innings type games this year.

    He’s not throwing a lot of meatballs tonight but the Sox approach again is awful; most look like they are trying to hit 5 run homers.

    Shaw hits the ball reasonably well; it’s caught. Voit hits his just a little harder and Renfroe can get to it; he hits it softer and Kike gets it. Baseball

    I sit corrected. You have to admit there is a lot of 20-20 hindsight here though.

    And it wasn’t like it was one of those a pesky at bats Gardner sometimes has where he fouls off 6 or 7 pitches with 2 strikes.

    No loophole; it wasn't a trade. The Brewers waived Shaw and would have released him had the Sox not made the claim. You can claim someone off waivers in August; that is allowed. In the past (up until 2019), if a player cleared waivers, he could be traded. Now, it's either an outright claim or, if the players clears waivers, he can be released or outrighted to the minors. No players or money change hands.

    Ethyl chloride. My guess is they stopped using it because, while it did ease pain, it also masked real injuries.

    In a vacuum, all true. However, none of us knows what constraints John Henry put on him. If the edict was to stay under the cap, then I don’t see there was much Bloom could do. Now if said constraints weren’t there, then Bloom deserves all the criticism we can muster.

    Vaz is on bereavement leave. It was announced about an hour before last night’s game. Nothing was said about the reason or how long he’ll be gone. It’s why Wong was able to come in and play late in yesterday’s game.

    Still on paternity leave in LA; should be flying back tonight and be in the lineup tomorrow. I think he’s allowed 3 games per the CBA.

    I was thinking Yaz was the primary DH that year, but per Baseball Reference, it was the immortal Bob Bailey, so yeah, JD would have been the DH. Not sure Kike plays ahead of Remy. Close call there; definitely a different skill set. Which to the pen? As I look at the numbers, neither. More than likely ERod isn't in the rotation, although with the Gerbil as manager, it's hard to say. Still, my basic point was these ain't the 78 Sox.

    "Clutch" hitters seem to be able to relax more in high leverage situations, so they better able to do what they normally do. the guys who tense up can't do that. It doesn't mean the clutch hitter will get a hit every time nor that the choker won't come through once in a while. Somebody mentioned Ortiz's two walkoffs in 2004. The second was a bloop into center field. If he gets better wood on it, Bernie Williams catches it and the game goes on. Willie McCovey came up in the 7th game of the 1962 World Series with men on 2nd and 3rd and 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th; a hit would have won the Series for the Giants. He ripped a line drive right at Bobby Richardson. McCovey failed only in that he it the ball in a bad spot.

    One of the best teams in Sox history had stretches of the following: 3-11 in July 3-13 in September All the 1978 Red Sox did was win 99 games (and yes, I lived through that nightmare, no need to remind me of what happened in game 163). Right after that second streak, they went 12-2 to finish the year, including 8 straight to close the scheduled season and tie the Evil Empire. It took all 8 to make up a one game deficit as the Yankees refused to lose until the last day of the season. That all being said, this team is not the 78 Sox in any way, shape or form. Devers and Bogaerts would be the only guys who would have played regularly for that team. Eovaldi and ERod would have been slotted in the 4-5 holes in the rotation.
