    Problem is Vazquez isn’t overall all that great a catcher. He has a powerful arm. Most of his other catching skills are average at best.

    Cole's signing was pre-pandemic. Sure, in 20-20 hindsight, yeah, but literally no one was calling it a pandemic in December and anyone who says they did is lying. WHO didn't call it that until March.

    I’d trade Moreland to NY in a heartbeat. Of course, the price would be steep. I’d want LaMahieu and a couple of those kid pitchers at minimum.

    They’re a month into the season Jerry; the short summer training is no longer an excuse for injuries. 3 weeks ago sure, but not now.

    It's exactly the emphasis on velocity. For one thing, we've developed a bunch of throwers, not pitchers. Throwers think they have to go 100% on every pitch. The aces of yesteryear could throw hard when they needed to, but they knew that 85% would get the job done most of the time. They had the extra gear when they needed it. Old timers knew how to pitch, how to set hitters up. They called their own game and always had since they were kids. Can you imagine Bob Gibson being told the pitches would be called from the bench?

    ERA is not a good stat for relievers. Hembree’s year so far is a perfect illustration of that. That ERA is primarily the product of his last outing against the Phillies. He pitched in 11 games this year for the Sox and allowed 6 runs in 9 2/3 innings. In 8 of those outings, he was unscored on; he gave up 1 run in each of 2 others and 4 in the Philadelphia game. His ERA going into that last game was 1.86. I will take a middle reliever who does the job 70% of the time every time. Note I said middle reliever. Now to be fair, I don’t know about inherited runners but I think most times he’s come in at the start of innings.

    Roster has to be down to 26 at noon tomorrow. Who goes. With Arroyo now on the active roster, I’m guessing Lin and a pitcher (there are too many candidates).

    Disagree on Hembree, overall this year he’s been pretty decent. He was awful tonight, no doubt about it. But coming into tonight, he’d allowed 2 runs in 9 2/3 innings over 10 appearances. He’d also walked only 2. He’s been fine as a 5th/6th/7th inning type. Frankly, I’ll take a guy who gives up a bunch of runs in one game out of 10 over one who gives 1 up every time he pitches. The others are very replaceable at this point.

    You don’t know if Bloom can evaluate pitching properly? Do you have any idea how many pitchers the Rays developed while he was part of both their minor league and major league departments? It’s statements like that that make it hard to take anything you post seriously.

    I’ve jokingly said over the past decade or so that the Red Sox always do well the first 20 years of a century. However, it is an unfortunate fact that the Sox were basically putrid for 15 years after they won the series in 1918. I can only hope history is not repeating itself.
