  1. Our pitching may be mediocre but our run differential average leads the entire American League. As long as the offense keeps raking, we've got a good shot.
  2. My problem is with instilling a team wide aggressive base running philosophy. A smart baserunning philosophy is something different, and probably impossible to apply. Then you are depending on what each players ideas about what smart baserunning is. I'm not sure how it would come across if the manager tells the team to "always look to take the extra base...except you, you, and you".
  3. I am mostly against any philosophy that accepts that it is ok to make some outs in order to gain a perceived advantage. The only general philosophies that I think work have to do with prevention. Pitchers should do their best not to walk batters to prevent baserunners. Hitters who get on base should not take too many risks of running into outs. There are of course exceptions even to these general philosophies. But they both focus on the most important aspect of baseball. Each team gets 27 outs per game. That is baseball's clock. You want to preserve your outs and make your opponents use up theirs.
  4. Ok, cool. He is just a bench player so anything above his career norms is gravy. You always hope to get a bench guy during one of his rare good seasons. It can happen and is a good thing in a year when you make the playoffs. Plus, Young is a decent enough fielder that he won't hurt you defensively.
  5. You got a problem with .295/.368/.577/.945 off the bench?
  6. Chris Young is doing his job. No complaints from me.
  7. I think it's about 50/50 between offense and defense over the course of the season. (I don't refer to it as hitting and pitching, but I assume offense and defense means the same thing). In the playoffs, like in other sports, sometimes defense is more important.
  8. I am for the most part happy with Farrell except for his teams tendencies to be aggressive on the bases. This has always been my main criticism of him. Even though they have been mostly successful this season, I still would prefer a bit more caution to avoid running into outs. The one area in general where I always wondered if more teams should take advantage of is when the ball gets away from the catcher. But I do realize that the base runners have to be a bit on the aggressive side to take advantage of this, and it is hard to anticipate. So my philosophy is that once you get on base safely you should not give away outs by being too aggressive.
  9. I like your first choice best, but either way works for me.
  10. I think this team is good enough to win it all with the present pitching staff. For the future, I think they need to find more dependable starters than Buchholz and Kelly, but they could get by without adding another TOTR starter. It would be nice to get one, but not essential. One more decent starter that can put the ball over the plate would help, but I believe they have enough now to give it a good run.
  11. After Papi retires, maybe Mookie is our cleanup hitter.
  12. Talk about "great" timing! Ha! I revive this thread and Mookie goes off! No one is laughing more at me than I am myself! Amazing performance by Mookie! Home runs to all three parts of the outfield, and a spectacular catch! The kid has talent to burn! I love it! He sure let me have it! LOL!
  13. I guess I'm the only one who doesn't really know that.
  14. This thread is about Mookie Betts. We have a separate thread about pitching, which has been much improve this season.
  15. By the time you get to 600 PA's it's too late to make any changes, as you noted. That's why you have to go with what you have now. Decisions made now impact long term results for both the team and the individual player. Mookie doesn't need to bat leadoff for the sake of his success nor for the success of the team. If he is going to succeed it will be based on how he utilizes his talent, not where he bats in the lineup.
  16. Runs scored and RBI are heavily influenced by team performance.
  17. Mookie Betts 9/2/2015: .275/.319/.454/.773
  18. I think enough of the season has gone by to make reasonable judgements on this team and the players, both positive and negative.
  19. 236 plate appearances.
  20. Again with OPS. What has his OBP and BB% been in the last 3 weeks? And more important what numbers are players such as JBJ an Bogaerts putting up? What does batting leadoff have to do with Mookie's performance? Could he not have put up similar numbers lower in the order? Would the team have been worse off wih him lower in the order?
  21. Maybe I'm holding Mookie to too high a standard because of how everyone gushes over him. Players like Shaw and JBJ are sometimes looked on as ones who will come down to earth, or regress. Mookie is always spoken of glowingly as one who is sure to succeed but is sometimes unlucky. I look at actual performance before I make judgements. Mookie is not playing at the same level as many on the team are. But for some reason, this fact can't be pointed out. Mookie is a decent player right now, but he really hasn't been deserving of getting the most plate appearances if you look at the actual results so far.
  22. What will his OBP and walk ratio be? OPS is not the best number to use to evaluate a leadoff hitter. He should be be hitting better now, not by the end of the season. I don't think a player should be utilized based on projections, but current performance.
  23. The 1975 outfield of Rice, Lynn, and Evans still ranks the highest in my book. An outstanding combination of hitting and fielding. They are very hard to top.
  24. Why is Betts still leading off? His OBP is .318, the lowest of all the good hitting starters on the team. His walk Pctg. of 5.9% is also lowest of the top starting hitters on the team. Not really great numbers for a leadoff hitter. He may have potential, but why should he continue to get the most plate appearances? Everyone keeps talking about how great a player he is, but of all the stars on the team, he really hasn't stood out so far. It seems we are always waiting for Mookie.
  25. I am well past giving up on Buchholz. I hope the FO is diligently looking for a way to replace him. It's best for the team and probably the best for Clay.
