  1. I'd rather see Swihart playing every day in Pawtucket than being the backup catcher in Boston. Agree on the move to left field, though, as I'm not sure his bat is or will be good enough to make a positional move worth it and I'd rather see him focusing on becoming a top-flight catcher. I'm thinking he goes in a trade for a pitcher this summer regardless, though.
  2. Meant to post this in the poll thread, but: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/why-david-ortiz-still-plans-on-retiring-despite-his-amazing-start-165826455-mlb.html I'm really not sure why some people seem to think his blazing hot start would change anything about his retirement plans...we knew before the season that he was calling it quits not because he couldn't play any more, but because he personally felt the time had come regardless of what the numbers said. I know the "Would you leave $25 million on the table?" bit has some people buzzing, but I don't see the appeal in throwing money at a guy who is ready to retire (and who already has a contract) to convince him to change his mind. Of course, there would be zero complaints on my part if he did decide to stay another year (far from it), but purely on a personal level I'd prefer to see him stick to his guns and go out with what looks to be an epic final season than reverse course and turn this into some kind of ongoing game of "Will he or won't he?"
  3. I hardly think it's panic time yet. Price is going to be fine. Porcello just had his first really bad start since coming off the DL last August. He'll be fine. Wright is at least a #4/5, possibly better. Buchholz is admittedly not looking good, but we've seen this from him before and we've also seen him turn it around. Kelly looks ready based on AAA results...let's see what he's got. There is cause for concern, but not for desperation...not yet.
  4. Not before I get to post "Brace yourselves: Benintendi is Coming."
  5. Looks like we'll have to sink or swim with Kelly for a while.
  6. No argument there.
  7. Sorry, but the real Bill-806 would still have found some way to criticize Papi's performance (like not having enough stolen bases or infield hits) or insinuated that he is about to get injured or is on 'roids. Nice try, though.
  8. Well yeah, ideally, but Schilling chooses to be very public and vocal about his political opinions - which is fine, but it is inevitably going to spawn some reaction, positive or negative. To expect otherwise just isn't realistic.
  9. Agree...and it's kind of sad that every discussion of his accomplishments as a player seems to invariably get tangled up with his political views and other off-field controversies. As Illinois said, one really should have nothing to do with the other.
  10. We will still have Hanley and (I hate to say it, but) Pablo under contract in 2017, with Shaw and Travis available to play 1B and Moncada potentially entering the picture as a 3B option. With all of that in mind, I'd prefer not to spend big bucks to bring in an aging slugger just to DH.
  11. Not to mention that the whole thing was apparently precipitated by the Rangers hitting Bautista out of unresolved butthurt over the famous bat flip last October (so, 7 months ago). Maybe that's also "old school baseball," but it seems to me there's enough potential for guys to get hurt and careers to be put in jeopardy every game without getting into wars of retaliation over stupid ********.
  12. Every time I glance at this title, my mind fills in "Red Sox Offense - thrilling as f***."
  13. That 2003 Sox offense was really something.
  14. I think Edes reported that the Red Sox had proposed JBJ for Furbush and the M's said no. Never sounded right to me either, so I'd be more inclined to believe Ben.
  15. Wasn't it the Mariners who said no to that deal, supposedly? I'm cringing just thinking about it.
  16. I don't think 'limited resources' has anything to do with it, unless I missed something...it's more about keeping the forum tidy and easily readable, I think. I like having one thread dedicated to specific Buchholz discussion, one for Sandoval, one for Farrell, etc...and most other random thoughts can go in a game thread or a larger catch-all thread like "2016 Starting Rotation" or "2016 Realistic View." I try not to start new threads as a rule of thumb unless there's something newsworthy (like a new signing or trade) or the topic legitimately doesn't fit into an existing thread...but that's just me.
  17. The average MLB catcher hit .238/.302/.376 last season (and roughly the same so far this year), so just being league average for his position isn't a high bar for Vazquez to clear. He may well be better than that, but as long as he does his usual thing behind the plate and gets a hit once in a while, that's enough for me.
  18. Heh...don't get him started on Iggy.
  19. From what I understand, the "package deal" tactic used by the Red Sox and other clubs to get around the $300k signing limit is neither a secret nor explicitly against the rules...the issue would be if a player signed for $300k but actually received more (i.e., a group of guys sign for the limit and money is then funneled to the top players the team actually wanted), which is presumably why the investigators were looking at players' bank accounts. Just speculating at this point, but that would indeed be pretty shady.
  20. Welcome, BB. Same here, or at least he's close. Big Papi is, of course, incomparable, and I love me some Xander, Mookie, and the rest of the young core, but after pulling for Jackie for so long and spending a lot of time defending him when he was struggling badly, got sent down, and looked like he might be done in the organization, it makes me near deliriously happy to see him having this kind of success.
  21. The turnaround begins tonight.
